2013 reread: I still enjoy this story. I imagine that those complaining about how preachy it is might not actually look out their windows to see just how much humans are actually destroying the world. So everything that the fairies say in the book about mud men is pretty spot on. :P...more

I see on tumblr this whole thing about how Ron is such a good friend because he stayed with Harry over Christmas... except all the Weasleys at school stayed over the break because Mr and Mrs were going to Romania to visit Charlie...
I imagine that the cost of the two of them (and Ginny) going was expensive enough. Taking all the boys with them would have been overkill.
Ron didn't stay because he was such an awesome friend. He stayed because there wasn't enough $$ to take him to Romania....more

I think what I like most about this book is it is neat to see how differently we view things now than, say, when the story was first published in 1934. Of course it's not going to be the same as the Disney movie because there are just some things and subject matters that don't exactly come out well on film and it's unfortunate that Walt Disney insisted on changing so much of Traver's work (as well as adding in nonsensical animation that had little to do with the original story) so that the two mediums are almost completely different.
I think that sort of colours people's views of the story itself.
Now of course my books are currently packed so I cannot remember which version of the first book I have (I'm certain it's the '34 version). I know it was republished shortly after I was born so that the Bad Tuesday chapter would seem less offensive to people. That kind of makes me sad that an author feels it necessary to change a book almost fifty years after its publication just to suit the needs of the bleeding hearts. I mean, you wouldn't rewrite Mark Twain would you?
Ah well. Perhaps some people would.
Mary Poppins in fiction form is delightfully wry and vain and upfront and stern and quite possibly everything I would hope to see in a nanny from the Edwardian period. I find the entire story very satirical and wonderful and it will forever remain on my bookshelf as a true classic. Even if it is very dated....more
Well I decided to come back and actually put in a review for this book since all I'd done is give it a star and go on my merry little way.

Hated this book. Flat out, this book was the worst of the whole seven-book series.
I bought HBP the day it was released and I was very excited to read something new in the series. To my shock, I couldn't believe how bad the story was. Something happened to JKR's editor. I think perhaps foul play was involved because apparently the editor was completely absent. Someone forgot to tell Jo that her book kinda (no actually "really really") sucked.
I'm not speaking from a shipping aspect because in the grand scheme of things I don't care who ends up with who. But it was the writing that made baby Jesus cry. The complete and utter abysmal writing. The rate of revelation in this book was appalling. The plot basically sucked and the use of flashback was overdone. The ENTIRE book was a "tell" and not a "show". Cardinal rule of writing. SHOW DON'T TELL.
JKR should have gotten some writing lessons before she wrote this one. Someone should have told her on the rough draft read-through that this was bad. Someone should have forced her to stay away from schmoopy romance because GAG.
What a complete stinker.
02/22/12 - four-ish years later and although I still dislike this book, my opinion has mellowed. It's an amazing series, but this is my least favourite. I'm not editing the review as my opinion four years ago is still just as valid.
