I knew we were going to get Travis' point of view this go around but I figured we'd get the same scenes with the alternate perspective. So while some familiar scenes made their appearance, there was so much more and I was expecting or prepared for that. Between glimpses into a time when Travis was younger, deeper looks at the bonds holding the Maddox family together, and the elaboration of what happens after Travis and Pigeon's second trip to Vegas, I was floored!
McGuire had me falling in love with her characters in Beautiful Disaster, but in this follow up they ended up feeling like family. I will say there was a little more of a sadness hanging over some pieces in these pages because McGuire shows us Travis' constant internal struggle. We see more of how Travis' mom's death brought these strong and larger than life men down to their knees and it's heartbreaking at times. But their ability to lean on each other in order to carry on was also inspiring and amazing.
The romance was back as well as a male's perspective and take of how confusing women can seem to them. But honestly it was the ending that pushed me over the edge. I'm so glad McGuire decided not to stop in the same place, but to go further ahead in their story. There were surprises for sure and I'm anxious to see how readers will react.
I had no doubt this book would be amazing and that I'd love every minute of it, but despite the bar being set oh so high, somehow McGuire managed to surpass even that! I cannot recommend this read enough, so when April 2nd rolls around, don't walk to the store to get your copy....run!(less)

There's something language and adult content throughout the book that places it outside of the young adult genre.
Now that it's clear that this title is not young adult, I can start gushing about this book and the writing McGuire delivers in these pages. I know you guys have come across books in the past that just instantly draw you in and stand out from the rest of the books on your shelves. That's what this book was for me, far and away! McGuire's writing flows naturally throughout the pages and her dialogue will have all her readers feeling like they're hearing the words float off the page, and not just reading the text in front of them.
Her characters are fabulous! Truly people that I wish weren't fictitious and we could all call our friends. Travis and Abby are sensational but the secondary characters were on equal footing and held their own throughout the book. I'll admit that while there was plenty going on throughout these pages, it wasn't nearly enough. When I found out that McGuire has another title coming out in April 2013 that she's called a companion to this title I was over the moon excited! While this title is primarily from Abby's point of view, Walking Disaster (Beautiful, #2) will be the same storyline but from Travis' point of view and I cannot wait to see how that turns out. I love the idea of seeing how things panned out from his eyes and getting a more encompassing picture of what really took place for these amazing characters.
If you had any doubts about this title or author (not sure why you would) you can rest assured that she is the real deal! It's a fresh story, a wonderful read and it's a title that I am sure I will read over and over again. Even still I'm not sure I'll ever get enough of this story or these characters!(less)

I found myself really wishing that it was a series opener instead of a stand alone title because I would love nothing more than for the story to lead somewhere else so that I wouldn't have to say goodbye to these great characters, this wonderful world, and all the action and excitement Cline brought to the table with this title.
I cannot thank the lovely people at Random House NY for introducing me and sending me a copy of this wonderful book. Cline's writing was refreshing, easy to relate to, and the type that kept you wanting nothing more than to keep reading even whether during an intense action scene, a romantic flirtation, or just a casual conversation between characters. As someone who has enjoyed video games but never got crazy into them, I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this title, but I shouldn't have worried. Cline will have you engrossed in the story after the very first chapter and no one will be able to resist the storyline he's laid out for his readers.
I found myself wishing this was really happening, finally appreciating some of the technology that surrounds us, wondering what it would be like to be able to play out a role in a movie, pick apart a mystery so large that the contest itself could last for years without anyone coming close....the anticipation alone was addicting.
I unfortunately had never heard about this before it was sent to me, but I can tell you that now that I have, I'll be recommending it to everyone I know, making to sure to gift it to my big reader friends, and hoping with crossed fingers that Cline brings another title to the table in the future that lives up to this amazing book!(less)

I'm having trouble thinking of where to even begin with this review. I have to say that this read was haunting, maddening, exhilarating and downright magical from start to finish! Howard took a classic story that was always a favorite of mine and managed to have me falling in love with both the original story lines and this new twisted version as well. The journey was a confusing (in the best possible way) and action packed, fast ride all the way through. Readers will have a hard time separating reality from fiction and will feel like they're going through each and every obstacle and test right along side of Alyssa.
Jeb was endearing and wonderful. Morpheus was downright addicting and dangerous. He turned out to be a combination of characters with a few new additional characteristics as well that proved to be a winning combination. I could only sympathize with Alyssa when she came face to face with all these decisions and revelations. The Mad Hatter, Chessie, Red, and the white rabbit are all back and more interesting and surprising than ever!
With each turn of the page I found myself wanting to take up drinking tea instead of boring old coffee, avoid clams for dinner ever again, and watching my steps when coming close to any type of flower or insect. I'm not quite sure I'll ever be able to look at these things the same way from here on out.
If you're a fan of the classic Carroll tale, there's no way you'll be able to resist this read, and if you're not or have never read the original class, I still find it hard to believe that readers won't find themselves falling in love with this unique and fresh new voice in YA literature!(less)

I can't believe it's been on the shelves and I have only now discovered this literary perfection! I can only say that I can't even remember how I came across the title this past week and what really persuaded me to decided to buy it, but whatever the reasons, I'm just glad I finally did.
Totally caught off guard because I had zero expectations going into this book, I was shocked to find myself flying through the pages and unable to stop reading to do anything else. Without a doubt a page turner, the kind where everything outside of the book ceases to register, and before you know it you've reached the last page and know for a fact that you've got to start reading the next installment immediately or you don't know what you'll do with yourself. So because I was so excited to see that there were three installments so far in the series already on the shelves, I decided to pick up books two and three because I refused to make the same mistake twice. I was hooked.
The characters, not just the main characters, but all of them were wonderful! I was completely invested and enthralled with the world and scenarios Armentrout had created with this series and could not get enough of them. They each were so different and yet flowed so well with the others that it had me feeling like an insider instead of a reader watching from the outside in, if that makes any sense. All you readers out there know what I'm talking about. It doesn't happen often, but every once in while you have to remind yourself while reading an amazing book that it is just that....a work a fiction and in no way a reality that you are a part of.
And I have no choice but to comment on the fact that the main character Katy was a book blogger! And not just any book blogger, but a realistic one at that. She participates and mentions memes that we all know and love. The way she describes her reading and the reviews she's creating hits home and had me falling in love with this character over and over again. Congrats to Armentrout....you've got a fan for life!
If you're lucky you've already picked up this series and are anxiously awaiting the fourth installment in the series due out this year....if you were in my boat...stop what you're doing and do yourself a favor and pick up this series, not just the first installment but all three that are currently available because hopefully you'll become as addicted to this series as I am!(less)

Readers were able to come along on the journey with her and I loved every minute of it. She's thrown into this world and not given a very warm welcome to say the least. Demons are attacking, her mother is kidnapped, her new "friends" are not so friendly and this new sight of hers is a gift she can't give back. Clare's writing is all-consuming and I learned quickly to clear my schedule when picking up one of her books. I never want to put them down once I've cracked the spine (OK so I wouldn't ever literally crack a book's spine, but you get my drift) and can't tear myself away once I'm into it.
Clary's dynamic with the shadowhunters is interesting and each is unique, but none more so than the one with Jace. He's gorgeous, strong, protective (just not always of her) and ornery to-boot! But we've all loved the bad boy at some point in time, (maybe even more than once) so who can blame Clary when she can't help the draw she feels towards him. It makes for a fun and thrilling series and this first installment had me out shopping for the sequel, City of Ashes to see what happened next.(less)

She is a genius and her Divergent series is a hit without a doubt! I can't tell you how excited I was (I know I wasn't the only one) for this second series installment to hit the shelves so I could see what was in store for our characters next. There was a lot riding on this sequel, due to the insanely positive reactions after the series opener came out. With all that pressure, anxiety and hope riding on what was expected out of this title, I'm not sure how Roth managed to keep calm. But whatever she did worked, because Insurgent can only be called a success.
The action, the adventure, the twists and turns, and romance factors were all still present and did not disappoint in the slightest. Readers are once again following along with Tris and Four as well as the other characters as they continue to make sense of what is going on around them, as well as planning their next moves and formulating their plans. It was exhilarating and such a wild ride the whole way through. I wasn't sure what Roth would decide for these characters in this book but I will say she once again threw me for a loop and surprised readers all around. Where things will go from here, only Roth knows. Not sure any reader can really predict (or even attempt to) at this point what is in store for Tris and Four after the revelations that came out in Insurgent, but one thing I'm certain of is there will never be a dull moment in this series. Once again I'm really looking forward to the next installment in the series and only wish that I could wave a magic wand and have the book sitting on my bookshelf today rather than some time in the future. I can't wait to see what happens next!(less)

I can't say that I found this to be a surprise, but I was really excited to learn that despite all the hype that I was experiencing before getting my hands on a copy of this to read, I discovered that it wasn't in vain. This new title lived up to the jazz and then some.
J.A. London makes up the mother-son writing team of Jan and Alex Nowasky. Jan also writes under the name of Rachel Hawthorne and is widely known for her (very) popular Dark Guardian series. It was one of my favorites and I was very disappointed and sad to hear that after four books, the series was ending. But the disappointment didn't last long, because shortly after I realized that series was over, I got wind of this upcoming release and couldn't have been more excited to see what the mother-son team was capable of. And let me tell you, they can pack a punch for sure!
Not knowing what to expect from this alternate reality where humans are at the bottom of the food chain and are forced to supply blood for the vampires that overthrew them was a little harder to grasp. But I'll admit I quickly caught up, as I'm sure other readers will as well. The pace is fast and readers won't really have a choice but to catch on quickly because it's impossible not to devour this one as quick as possible...it's too addicting to take breaks and stop for just about anything...including meals and sleep.
After getting a feel for the characters and people Dawn is surrounded with on a daily basis, readers get introduced to the juicy parts, the vampires, the delegates and the agency they report to and all the stress that goes right along with it. Without giving away too many spoilers since this one won't be hitting the shelves until May 29th readers just have to know that there is a lot going on with this title and every little bit counts. This writing team will be keeping their readers glued to the pages and desperate to find out what will come next for these new and exciting characters. I know I'm already chomping at the bit for another taste of this world and Dawn and the rest of her crew.(less)

I took one look at this cover (I'm ashamed to say) and almost put the book right back down. I can't quite put my finger on what it is that bothered me so much but I immediately felt like relating to these characters, let alone coming to enjoy myself in Banks' world would be nearly impossible. I can't stress enough how wrong I was. Banks had me hooked I think after the second or third chapter, and at that point I was doing everything I could to fly through the pages as quickly as possible.
Don't even get me started on how excited I was to find that the second and third installments in the series were already out and available for me right away, or how depressed I was to find out that the fourth book had not yet been released. Finding that out was a bad day to say the least. Artemis, Ares, Koda, and the rest of the gang had me invested from the first moment they entered the pages, and I'm still wishing I could find out more about them. Artemis was hard not to feel for and so I became a cheerleader for whatever decisions she made...with the exception of the moments she was doing her best to resist Ares. I can't be alone when I say that he was beyond adorable and everything a girl would want if they were Artemis, right? Banks had me sympathetic to Artemis' situation with the people she grew up with and the less than welcoming vibe they always put out when she was around. Brent was the exception, but that's a whole different story, and one that frankly I'm still trying to figure out.
So after Artemis won my heart as far as heroine's go, Ares and his pack were next in line. They had me drooling, laughing, tearing up and rooting for them all each and every step of the way. If you haven't had the chance to come across this series, do yourself a favor and pick up all three installments immediately....you won't regret buying them, but you might regret not buying them all in advance when you finish book one and wish book two was right there to crack open.(less)

I should have come to expect this type of opener from Cook's work, but each and every time I crack one of her books open I'm still excited all over again when I find myself immediately pulled into the worlds that she's created with each new title she puts on the shelves. Not really knowing what to expect out of this book, when asked to check it out for review before it came out to the public I figured why not? I've loved all of her work in the past, and was looking forward to seeing her venture into a new series filled with new characters and scenarios to follow along. I'm so grateful now to have been given the chance to see for myself what this new title and series would be like, because as always, Cook has come up with something fantastic!
Completely unique and like nothing I've read before or probably will again, I had no doubt that even though I had only made a little headway into the book, that there was no going back....it was just that good! I was thrown off course so many times while reading that I couldn't believe Cook was able to keep up the high level of excitement and anticipation from start to finish. Leni and Jeric are two characters with so many layers that there was never a chance to get bored with them, or even feel like you've known them enough to anticipate what they'd do next. They were fresh, unpredictable, easy to relate to on some levels and intriguing on others. Just when I was starting to feel like I'd gotten into the flow of their story, Cook switched things up and introduced two additional main characters...I was skeptical. Again, I'm not sure why I continue to even have a shred of doubt where Cook is concerned. It only took minutes and a few pages of their story to fall in love with them just as much as Leni and Jeric. And wouldn't ya know...Cook would change things up at that point too.
Her writing and the stories she weaves for her readers are fun, fresh and impossible to resist. Put aside some solid quality reading time when you pick this one up....because you're not going to want to put it down...it's just that good! I can't wait to see what Kristie comes out with next and this time around I'm promising myself that there will be no hesitation or worry that it won't live up to her high quality work already out there. I'm already predicting this series is a smashing success, because I just can't imagine anyone not loving it. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the second installment brings to the table.(less)

It is without a doubt a gift she has and I'm grateful for it. I wasn't sure how the Infernal Devices series would match up to the Mortal Instruments. But after finishing this opener, I think I might actually be leaning towards this new series. I found myself invested in all the characters this time around instead of just one or two.
No two are alike and I loved them all. The villains were perfectly awful, the surprise twists were unexpected, and the good guys had me rooting for them every step of the way. The reappearance of old friends like Magnus Bane was a fun addition and the new central cast of characters hooked me for sure. Tessa, Will and Jem are of course my new favorites, but I also loved learning more about those in the background like Sophie, Agatha and Thomas. Everyone had me interested and I couldn't wait to learn more.
Obviously if readers love the premise and Shadowhunter world from the Mortal Instruments series, there will be no question that they'll still be enchanted this time around. We get a little more information on their ways, and the central family names. The Lightwoods and Herondales piqued my curiosity to a record high. The pace was as quick as always and I turned the pages as fast as I could. The battles maybe could have lasted a little longer but the last one still had me reeling. I'm without a doubt anxious for the sequel, The Clockwork Prince, to hit the shelves. Hopefully December will come quickly and I'll have an awesome surprise waiting for me under the Christmas tree.(less)

I was loving every minute and every page with a passion! It was fantastic and has officially become one of my 2010 favorites. Elizabeth Eulberg may be a debut author, but her writing style and The Lonely Hearts Club are magic, no question about it!
Penny Lane doesn't exactly have a normal or what one may consider a typical home and family, but one thing she seems to have in common with just about every girl around is boy trouble, and she's got it in spades. With The Beatles as her inspiration, she just may have found a solution to all of her problems, and those of her friends.
I really can't find any negatives about this book, other than I wish it hadn't ended, ever! But in all seriousness, if you ask me, there aren't any negatives about this book, it was wonderful. It was funny, quirky, realistic and with The Beatles all over it, and all through it, what's not to love? Even the cover is brilliant, don't you think?
Eulberg has a fresh voice and I don't think she'll be going anywhere anytime soon. She spoke at the book festival I attended a while back and after meeting her, there's no question that her writing comes from the heart. Her personality is all over this book. While speaking to the crowd, she may have mentioned a sequel being in the works for The Lonely Hearts Club in the future, and I couldn't be more excited about that prospect...really I was jumping up and down!
After finishing The Lonely Hearts Club, I most definitely have not had nearly enough of Penny Lane and her club of close friends. Whether it's Tracy, Diane, Morgan, Rita, Ryan or Penny's parents, I just adored them all and most definitely did not want to say goodbye. If you've got a sense of humor and are looking to add a new favorite to your shelves, look no further, The Lonely Hearts Club is the perfect book for everyone!(less)

Jennifer Murgia's book had me excited right from the beginning. She drew me in and her world refused to let me go, not that I wanted to leave, lol. I was so far from disappointed, in fact she surpassed what I had even hoped for. And did I mention this is her debut YA novel? I know...amazing!
Who doesn't love the idea of a guardian angel? I know I do and I can only hope that mine is as dreamy as Garreth! We meet our main character, Teagan in Angel Star and I just loved her. She's kind, brave and has such a big heart, and did I mention brave? Guardian angel or not, this girl has got guts!
And as I mentioned before, Garreth *swoon* is wonderful. He's the definition of good, protective and all around perfection. But where there is good, bad is always close behind. Enter Hadrian. All I can say is that he's got the tall, dark and dangerous vibe down to a tee.
The truth is, no review can do this book justice. It's just that good! This is a book I will read again and again, it's already a favorite. Some books (and they are few and far between) just stick with you, and that is Angel Star for me. I can't express how excited I am for the sequel to come out and am only sad that it's not already on the shelves.
This book has it all, light vs. dark, good vs. evil, discovering what really matters and fighting for what's right. It's also about sacrifice and standing up for what you believe in. It's deep and emotional and will have you going through a gamut of emotions.
Murgia has a talent and is a natural story teller, so she's in the right business. Like I said...perfection!(less)

I couldn't wait to create the post for this title. I think it's safe to say that if I were asked to pick my top five favorite authors, Elizabeth Eulberg would without a doubt be one of those writers. I can't even really pinpoint why that is exactly, or what makes her writing stand out better than the others, but there's no denying that it does. I think if Eulberg ever decides to pack it up and stop writing, we'll all be denied a fantastic talent that does not come along very often. Her books are all so different and unique and yet they always have the same warmth and magnetism that draws readers in to the pages.
When I opened this book up I knew that I would like it. I've yet to find one of her novels anything less that wonderful, but each and every time, including this one I'm still surprised by how much I enjoy myself while reading her work. I had flown through more than half of the book and didn't even realize that I had skipped a meal and neglected pretty much everything else that was going on around me at the time. But it didn't matter, finishing the story and seeing what happened to these lovely characters was all that was important. So I managed to read this one cover to cover in two sittings. If I had started this one on the weekend I wouldn't have gotten up for anything, but with work, I couldn't avoid having to put in my eight hours at the office.
Emme, Ethan, Carter, Ben, Jack, they were all fantastic! The band...oh I just loved the band! Each of these characters have their own unique personality and bring something great to the table, but all together they create this wonderful story that I can only thank Eulberg for sharing with her readers. Even though I wish she was one of those authors that churned out a book every couple of months, I understand that part of the genius in her writing is that it's not rushed, it flows from page to page and grips the reader with it's intensity and has us invested in these character's futures as if they're not fictional characters, but our very own real life friends and family.
After meeting Eulberg at a book festival a few years ago and getting the chance to hear her speak about herself and her journey through publishing, there's no doubt in my mind that when I open up one of her books, she's put her whole heart into each and every word and character. There are bits and pieces throughout the story that other authors might have left out or felt wasn't necessary to the story, but in truth, that's what makes Eulberg's writing wonderful (or at least one of the things) and different. It's the little details and twists that she throws into her work that not only engage the readers, but leave them only hoping that the story won't end anytime soon.(less)
