Undertow was a fun read about a new kind of alien invader - The Alpha or First Men - or what we would have called mermaids. But these aren't the beautiful women with fish tails. They are strong and fierce warriors. And they are on the shores of Coney Island. Thirty thousand of them.
In an attempt to integrate the Alpha with the human population, the Alphas are invited to attend the local high school, much to the chagrin of the humans. In scenes reminiscent of desegregation, the Alpha are brought to school under guard of the police and National Guard. Things don't go well and the governor of New York rallies the humans against the "Fishes".
Throughout all of this nonsense, 17 year old Lyric Walker prevails. She is assigned to the Alpha Prince Fathom and she teaches him to read. Fathom is quite a scary character and I loved how he just didn't understand some of the books Lyric brought to him. Just his comments about One Fish, Two Fish made me laugh.
Undertow is not your usual mermaid story. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

In a way, this book kind of reminded me of Julie Kagawa's Blood of Eden series but instead of vampires, we have zombies and people who have tested positive for the zombie virus. Positive is a new spin on the zombie apocalypse story. In Positive, the zombie apocalypse occurred about 20 years earlier. People live in the relative safety of walled cities. Our hero hails from Manhattan, where the subways are flooded and provide some fishing for our hero Finn and his buddy Ike. The zombie virus is also a different take on the old zombie story. Now it can take anywhere from exposure to 20 years for the zombie virus to manifest and turn a person into a snarling flesh-eating killer. When Finn's mother goes zombie, the whole family is tested and Finn is sent to a medical camp in Ohio. He doesn't get there right away because his ride is killed by a very scary lady.
Finn begins his voyage across the US looking for that medical center where all will be good. On his way he learns about the world outside Manhattan. This is a journey story and each step along the way builds Finn's character. From what he sees of the world, he knows what kind of man he doesn't want to become.
I liked Finn's character. For someone with so little life experience, he was a quick learner and even quicker to react to situations. I loved how he treated his "family" and wanted to keep the girls safe, especially Kylie. Kylie was a strong character as well considering what she had gone through with Adare.
Positive kept me reading way into the night. The last part of the book was intense and I couldn't put the book down. I look forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

The international settings, the handsome and brawny men, the beautiful women... I can just imagine Jim Morgan's crew - D, Trevor, Ethan, Kane, Luke, swaggering around their safe house (think very large estate). These are ex-military off-the-grid lethal warriors - professionals. And Noelle's crew of female operatives - beautiful, efficient, and deadly. The teams work together when one of Noelle's operatives is held by a Colombian drug lord.
Midnight Rescue takes place in Colombia and Mexico and the teams must work together to break up a human trafficking ring. It's an action-packed, thrill a minute read. Not only will the action keep you on your toes, the romance is swoon-worthy. Kane and Abby are a wonderful couple and while the attraction is immediate, it takes time to develop into a romantic relationship. And whoa, these two have chemistry.
While I loved the lead couple Abby and Kane, Abby struck me as a little too impulsive for a trained assassin.
This is an addictive series. I'm off to read the next book in the series Midnight Alias.
