The Doll Maker by Majanka Verstraete is the kind of book that has you getting very nervous for these boys that come across theses weird dolls. The depiction of them reminded me why I am VERY picky about dolls and had more stuffed animals than them.
A little bit twisted Pinocchio, a little bit Chucky for young kids (I hate to use that analogy but it's the only one aside from The Doll House movie that I can think that describes that so much!) it was a fun read and a relief in a good way to figure out what happens in the end.
I loved that Verstraete captured that R.L. Stine feel with out being too scary and still very enjoyable. My favorite part is where Derek and Jamie figure the whole thing out and try to confront the bad guy very nonchalantly. It was great! I can't wait for the rest of the Weirdville series to come out!(less)

While on her first train trip by herself to visit her Uncle Andre, Cora meets a cast of characters, and a cute little dog by the name of Calvin, that band together to solve the mystery of the stolen Diamond of Madagascar.
This book was such a delight to read an reminded me so much of the books that I read when I was little. It reminded me a lot of the old 1940s train sagas that were so amazing which I think was Daveys' point because he does mention that Cora likes those kind of movies as well.
If you have a kid who is in to really great, cute adventure books, boy or girl, this is a great pick. It's even great if you're like me and want a great read that throws back to the age of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys! (less)

Farsighted was a brilliant debut work by Emyln Chand and "Open Heart" is a great sequel. Simmi is a girl after my own heart. After going through a exhilarating ordeal last summer and being saved by her own prince charming, Alex, who even though Dax is dark and mysterious, is still my replacement literary boyfriend, finds herself in a typical teenage girl situation. Doesn't know if she's pretty enough, doesn't know if her relationship with Alex is too good to be true, just normal girl stuff with a tad difference. That difference her being of the psychic nature.
UGH! I find myself in the same situation as I did when I read Farsighted. I want to give everything and gush at the same time, but I respect the laws of the spoilers and will not reveal anything to drastic like I am with another book I just read, which was disappointing, but I digress!

The main character of Serafay, is a part Sualwet, part Erdlander girl who has the classic struggle between two worlds syndrome going on, but the way Tyler creates this wonderful sea side tale it seems different. While encountering the surface she meets an man, who we later learn name is Tor, who at first appears to be a mute, but with a little encouragement from Sera re-learns to speak again.
Soon the Erdlander/Sualwet war reaches our two protagonists, Sera must hide in fear they discover what she is.
I absolutely love the way Tyler sets up the plot and the beautiful world that Sera and Tor live in. I'm a sucker for stories like this. The only downside is that it is a serial novel that was left on a HUGE cliffhanger! So we have to wait until January for part two.(less)
