It didn't take long for me to fall in love with this story because of its simplicity and its excellent writing.
I'll admit, it would have been enough for this book to just be passable. I probably would have still been happy. But instead, I got something that met some of my highest standards for shojo. Instead of being just a manga about the novelty of girls who like girls I think that Girl Friends creates a portrait of what it is like to be a girl in high school.
The story of two friends who start to fall for each other is a classic and the execution here is pretty fantastic. I see the connection these two girls have and I loved the way that the story tackles the denial and fears that come along with discovering you may like your best friend as more than a friend. The characters are all very well written and I love the way that they would actually be a cute couple.
One of the best things about this book is where I found it. When I found this in the graphic novel YA section of my library I was shocked. I live in a community that doesn't have a huge LGBTQ population. We're mostly churches, liquor stores, and summer tourists looking for a good view of the lake. Throw a stone and you will hit at least one of those three things. A yuri manga is like finding the actual holy grail of lesbian/bisexual representation. It is so interesting to see some of my own experiences as a bi teenager represented in a way that feels authentic....more

It was put together with some obvious care and attention to detail. If you are looking for a thoughtful gift then this may be a perfect fit.

There are a bunch of people who will probably have inWe Should All Be Feminists is a great concise look into feminism that is both broad and specific.
There are a bunch of people who will probably have incredibly eloquent and interesting things to say about this extended transcription of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's now famous talk, so instead I'm going to focus on why this is important. When we talk about feminism it is not only useful, but necessary, that we have perspectives outside of our own personal experiences to draw from. This book is perfect because it is easy to read and Chimamanda has an incredible talent for saying what needs to be said.
While I was reading I kept picturing myself putting this book in a starter pack for a young person in my life as an introduction to the concept. Having materials like We Should All Be Feminists is critical to extending knowledge and giving people who aren't entrenched in the ideas of feminism a place to start. The first step is often the most complicated and materials like this has the potential to play an important part in dispelling the stereotypes and assumptions that people often form when first introduced to something new without having good resources to draw from.
Seriously, if you have five minuets this is worth checking out so you have it as part of your repertoire. ...more

What more could you want?
The first thing you notice about this book is how amazing the visual design is. The style fits the tone of the story and the vivid colouring brings everything to life. It's incredibly polished and I have a serious case of art envy. I would give the art five stars alone.
The content of the graphic novel is good, passable, but has its limitations. The story is rather light on substance. It lacked that spark that it needed in order to make the concept really work. However, I still found it enjoyable because it's Cleopatra in Space, I mean common! The action and adventure aspects reminds me a little bit of the cartoon Atomic Betty and I am a sucker for female lead, concept driven, throwback, science fiction. I'm looking forward to checking out Book 2. The pull of this concept and the draw of the artwork is enough that I think this series will be worth following. Hopefully, book 2 will offer a little more growth and development....more

I had heard a lot of amazing things about Nimona before I finally got around to reading it and in my experience hype has the ability to ruin perfectly good stories. Thankfully with Nimona the story, characters, and artwork all work together to create a fantasy world that feels vast and in-depth despite only focusing on a small sampling of three characters. These characters drew me in and pulled at my heart. The character design was also just wonderful. The art perfectly suited the tone of the story and the rich and contrasting colours made the artwork stand out in the best ways. ...more

In volume 2 Ms. Marvel kicks ass and starts interacting with a larger world of aliens and mutants as well as taking on her first villain. The Wolverine cameo is so utterly perfect that I couldn't not smile at their interactions. The only reason this didn't get five starts is because I was a little disappointed with the last few chapters. The villain and story line began to loose some of its teeth. The overall message was good, but I found it to be a little over saturated and preachy for my tastes. ...more
