But I was pleasantly surprised - I really liked the writing this time, I liked Carrie and some of her friends, and I liked her story. Only when reading this book I realised that we know next to nothing about the family backgrounds of the four girls in the series, they never talk about it and I remember only one episode with a funeral where either the Mom or Dad of one of them died.(less)

But then a friend asked if I wanted to read it, she could borrow me the book. Why not, my friend actually quite liked it and we often have the same taste in books. I almost immediately started reading and could hardly put the book down in between. Very thrilling, very exciting, very dark. Unfortunately I spoilt myself a bit of the reading pleasure by reading the cover texts of Book 2 and Book 3 - not recommendable! But still a very suspenseful book, intended for a younger audience but still suitable for reader at my age (30+). Will also read Part 2 + 3 very soon!(less)

Not only because it has only 300 pages, but also because the story was interesting and the writing style was quite entertaining - at some points even hilarious. Especially his bits about Rabbit...
By the way, only a day after I got this book (and learned who Tony Hawk is) I saw 'his' Playstation-Game in an electronic-market. And some weeks later, in another electronic-market, I saw a guy even buying this game. Wonder if he also recently read "Slam". (less)

I've stated in the comments already that I was very irritated by all those unnecessary side references, remarks or little flashbacks to previous encounters or conversations - mostly starring Blues Dad. It is impressing how clever Blue is to know all these books and quotes etc. and I'm sure the author made A LOT of research to incorporate all that in her debut novel. But...who cares? Honestly.
But on the other hand the story itself, that evolved mostly in the second part of the book, was then quite absorbing and took an interesting turn toward the end. Not all loose ends were neatly tied up, so there would be space for a sequel. But if that ever happens I would advice Marisha Pessl to keep it shorter and to the point.
All in all I don't regret buying this book (anyway, was an Ebay purchase and not that expensive) and also reading it. Wouldn't be surprised if it might soon appear on a new edition of the '1001 books you have to read before you die' list because of it's unusual style and character. (less)

It reminded me of "I capute the castle", since it's also about a (once famous and rich) family living in a big house but having almost no money and told from the point of view of the teenaged daughter who experiences her first love.
Well, same is true for this book. Here our heroine is Penelope, a girl of 17/18 living outside of London and befriending another girl and her relatives. The book is set in 1954 and 1955, and of course the times were very different then. But what Penelope and Charlotte talked about is quite familiar: favorite music (Johnnie Ray! never heard of him), guys, pretty dresses, parties, gossip about other girls... Some things obvioulsly never change.
Although the lack of money is constantly mentioned throughout the book, they do have money for enough food for guest, for new fancy clothes, for amusements in the city. So it's not as if they're almost starving to death. I'd say they get by. And at the end there is even a rescuer on the horizon, who might provide a secure future for Penelope, her brother Inigo and her mother. What surprised me a bit where the prices of things then: Penelope lists what she would buy for Christmas if she had 10 pound - and this is quite a lot I must say.(less)

She always nudged me to finally read it, as long as it is "fresh" so to say and everybody is speaking about it. So I took it along on my vacation.
I didn't know anything about the story before I started reading and was a bit surprised - althoug I actually expected nothing really, unconsciously I seem to have suspected something different.
I found the way it was written quite innovative. Not only the fact that it is told from Mr. Death himself, but also his constant minor interruptions throughout the story.
The major theme of the book is friendship I would say. All the different kinds of friendships Liesel has: with Rudy, her father, Max, the wife of the mayor, her mother (yes, they are friends, too).
Have to admit that I cried at the (near) end. But I guess a lot of the readers had to. (less)

Es geht hier um die Geschichte einer Familie, deren kleiner Sohn bei einem Schulausflug plötzlich spurlos verschwindet.
Erzählt wird das Ganze vom älteren Bruder, der beim Ausflug dabei war und sich nun verantwortlich fühlt, nicht gut genug auf seinen Bruder aufgepasst zu haben. Gleichzeitig ist er aber auch sauer auf seine Eltern (im Besonderen auf seine Mutter), die sich nun so verhalten als hätten sie gar kein Kind mehr und ihn völlig links liegen lassen weil sie zu sehr mit der Trauer um den kleinen Dan beschäftigt sind. Mehrmals würde Harry am liebsten laut rausschreien "Hey, ich bin auch noch da!" Das tut schon weh. Andererseits kann ich mir gar nicht vorstellen, wie es der Mutter gehen muss nach einem solchen Verlust, und ich hoffe sehr dass ich es auch nie muss.
Da die Geschichte ausschließlich der point of view von Harry ist, erfahren wir auch nie was wirklich mit Dan passiert ist. Das ist zwar eine logische Konsequenz der Erzählweise, lässt mich als Leser aber etwas unbefriedigt zurück.(less)

The conflict presented is a hard one. What should you do as a parent? I don't know. I wouldn't have known how to decide had I been the appointed guardian. Tough decision, and I hope I'll never have to make it. (By the way, doesn't it remind you just a little bit of 'Sophie's Choice'?)
But it's not only the plot that's interesting. It is also the writing which I found to be very pleasurable to read. I liked the different viewpoints of the individual character, and still had the feeling to read one coherent story - although there were the flashbacks to let the reader understand how it all lead up to the now.
And then, during the last 50 pages, several big surprises! Unfortunately I cannot say more, otherwise I would spoil it for everyone. Just let say that much: it does not at all turn out the way I imagined it would after I read the introductory page.
I'm really looking forward to the movie now, which comes out at the end of this month.(less)

How can you say no to such an obnoxious little girl? He also has to care for his sister, who seems to be an Autist. He shows a lot of brotherly love towards her, but some times his limits of what he can take are reached and even overstepped. And all he really wants to do is to play baseball...

Aber es liest sich sehr schnell und hat auch nicht zu viele Seiten.
Altersmäßig bin ich ja zwischen Laura und Eliana, kann mich also nicht wirklich mit der einen oder mit der anderen identifizieren. Kann mich aber doch noch an meine Jugend erinnern, und auch daran dass ich manche Verbote meiner Eltern ungerecht etc. empfand. In der Beziehung ist das ganze schon recht realistisch dargestellt, nur die Sprache der Laura finde ich unpassend. An einigen Stellen soll das Coole durchkommen, was deplatziert wirkt, die restliche Zeit liest sich ihr Geschreibsel definitiv nicht wie das von einer Dreizehnjährigen. Und das, wo sich die Autorin doch im Vorwort noch so halb dafür 'entschuldigt', dass sie zu oft gesprochene als geschriebene Sprache verwendet. In diesem Buch meiner Meinung nicht, ich kann mir nicht vorstellen dass 13jährige solche Formulierungen benutzen. Nicht in jedem Satz, aber mir fiel das doch immer wieder auf.
Auch etwas unvorstellbar fand ich, dass beide voneinander immer so halb geahnt hatten, was mit denen los war. Als Laura schlecht gelaunt von der Schule nach Hause kommt, errät die Mutter sofort dass es nur gewesen sein kann weil Laura's Freundin Veronika schlecht über sie, die Mutter, geredet hat. Eine andere Möglichkeit kam ihr nicht in den Sinn. Also mir fallen da eine Menge Möglichkeiten für so eine schlechte Laune ein!! Aber die Mutter hatte mit ihrer Vermutung natürlich Recht, und das ist mir dann ein kleines bißchen zu oft passiert.
Abgesehen davon ist es ein netter Roman, so wie ich es verstanden habe auch ein Debüt. Auf alle Fälle eine sehr nette Idee, die Geschichte aus der Sichtweise von Mutter und Tochter zu schreiben.(less)

Now I finally read it, 1.) because friends put it on my "must read soon" list and 2.) because it's a perfect book for the gym because of its physical condition (not too thick, soft cover, binding which allows book to stay open without holding it on the edges).
Anyway, the story was very beautiful and the whole time I was so anxious how it might end, if Lily's father would find her and what he'd do with her then. What would happen to Rosaleen? And without spoiling to much: I was content with the ending.
I loved August, such a strong woman. Even in 1964, where the Civil Rights Movement for the African-American people really just started, was she a confident and strong woman, and at the same time so loving.
The reader knows from the beginning, that her life and that of Lily's mother must have somehow been connected one time, but I still didn't expect the story August finally tells Lily.
I also loved Lily. And if one day I might have a daughter and do name her Lily I'll definitely give her this book to read!
PS: Love to watch the recently made movie as well, but don't think it ever came out in the cinema here in Austria. Guess have to get it on DVD one time. (less)

Both times it's about a man and a boy, obviously. Here it is about a man and a girl, but apart from that not really different. I wonder how much of it is autobiografical, since the physical description of the 1st person narrator fits perfectly to the photo of Mike Gayle on the back cover. The language is simple English, really easy to read and understand. Therefore it took me only a day to read this book. I did smile here and there, but I did't laugh out loud. Maybe it wasn't the right topic for laughing, there is a serious tone to it.(less)

Denn nun will er auch noch an den Goldschatz der Elfen heran, der tief unter der Erde liegt. Die lassen sich das natürlich nicht so einfach gefallen, und schicken ein Spezialisten-Team nach oben, um Artemis zu bekämpfen.
Ich hab's gelesen, weil viele schon davon gesprochen haben und einige diese Bücher auch für besser halten als Harry Potter. Das würde ich nicht so sehen, bei Harry Potter gibt es ganz einfach viel mehr Details und da ist auch viel mehr dran an der Geschichte. Das kommt hier alles doch etwas zu kurz. Unterhaltsam war es dennoch, und ich finde es eigentlich zur Abwechslung auch ganz gut, dass hier die Hauptperson mal eine nicht ganz so liebenswürdige und positive Figur ist.(less)

Die relativ kurzen Sätze, die mich in anderen Romane vielleicht gestört hatten, passten hier perfekt. Genau so stelle ich mir die Gedankengänge eines pubertierenden Jugendlichen vor. Und es ist ja nicht so, dass sich der Autor alles ausdenken musste - er schrieb einfach nieder, was er selbst erlebt hatte, inklusive einiger dichterischer Freiheiten hier und da. Sehr gelungenes Zeugnis eines Jahres im Leben eines 16jährigen, behinderten, verliebten Internatschülers.

Zum Anfang haben sie noch die Insekten im Schlafzimmer, die rohen Hühnerfüße und die nicht-stattgefundene-Emanzipation der Frauen gestört. Doch schon schnell hatte sie sich daran gewöhnt und begonnen, das fremde Land in ihr Herz zu schließen. Und zwar derart, dass sie am Ende gar nicht mehr in ihre Heimat Kanada zurück will. "Verliebt" könnte man ihre Gefühle für Thailand wohl am besten beschreiben.
Mir hat es sich nicht ganz erschlossen, woher der plötzliche Sinneswandel bei Karen kam, und an Kakerlaken im Bett und Ameisen im Kleiderschrank könnt ich mich auch nicht gewöhnen. Aber vielleicht muss man alles mal ausprobiert haben.(less)

Vera Herzog kommt nach einer gescheiterten Ehe als neue Lehrerin an die "Schule am See" im Norden Deutschlands und wird dort als Erziehung für die "Prinzenhäusler" eingeteilt. Die gelten als Sorgenkinder des Internats, und bereiten auch Vera einige Kopfschmerzen. Schließlich schließen sie sich aber doch alle ins Herz.
Früher hab ich solche "Bücher zum Film/Serie" recht gern gelesen, mittlerweile nicht mehr so, da die Qualität solcher Bücher, die NACH dem Film geschrieben worden sind, meist nicht sonderlich gut ist.
Das hier ist aber ganz ok, sowohl vom Inhalt als auch von der Schreibe. Pro Kapitel wird anscheinend eine Folge nacherzählt, man merkt da immer deutliche Brüche obwohl versucht wird in den nächsten Kapiteln auch auf bereits gewesenes zurück zu verweisen.

Und kurze Zeit später bekomm ich sogar eine Anfrage dafür. Hätte ich ehrlich gesagt nicht mit gerechnet, da die Bücher ja jetzt nicht so der Knüller und die Serie auch nicht so bekannt sind. Aber es gibt anscheinend doch welche, die sie damals gesehen haben.
Jedenfalls dachte ich mir, dann kannst du die beiden Teile, die noch ungelesen sind, ja vorher nochmal schnell lesen, sind ja relativ kurz. Die Geschichten sind doch ganz nett, und immer mit einer Moral/Lebensweisheit oder sowas verbunden. Die Zielgruppe sind Teenager bzw Schüler, die wahrscheinlich selbst noch nicht so viel Lebenserfahrung haben und hierdurch Sekundärerfahrungen machen können - wahrscheinlich mit dem Ziel dieselben Fehler nicht auch im wahren Leben zu machen.(less)

Alle drei Romane sind übrigens auch mit Filmfotos ausgestattet, find ich immer eine nette Zugabe - so kann man sich die Leute auch nochmal besser vorstellen.
Übrigens wird einer der Schüler von jenem Schauspieler gespielt, der in "Verliebt in Berlin" den Bösewicht Richard gab. Hier ist er aber wohl nicht böse, genauso wenig wie im echten Leben (sagt zumindest die "Lisa"). Ich kenn ihn nur als Fiesling und muss sagen, dass er diese Rolle auch ziemlich gut + glaubhaft gespielt hat.
Hab dieses Buch mal zufällig im Buchhandel entdeckt, wusste vorher gar nicht dass es eine Fortsetzung der 6-bändigen Zauberland-Reihe von Alexander Wo...moreHab dieses Buch mal zufällig im Buchhandel entdeckt, wusste vorher gar nicht dass es eine Fortsetzung der 6-bändigen Zauberland-Reihe von Alexander Wolkow gibt. Bei diesem hier handelt es sich bereits um Band 11, und vorher habe ich natürlich brav auch die anderen Bände dazwischen gelesen.
Hier treffen wir wieder auf die alten Freunde den Scheuch, Löwen und Holzfäller (die ja nicht in allen Büchern vorkommen), und es ist immer schön von ihnen zu lesen.(less)
