Reading the metamorphosis and the other short stories, I find it hard not to call him at least "weird".. Some of the short stories were great, some were okay, some were *please end so I can move on*.. Part of the difficulty of connecting with him I guess lies in the MASSIVE AMOUNT of symbolism and hidden meaning that opens up interpretation.. But sometimes this symbolism was confusing me to the extent I wasn't understanding anything.. That, and I guess the translator didnt help in showing the beauty, using very cold emotionless language sometimes it took the beauty of language..
Am I reading for Kafka again? I don't think so..(less)

Great novel nonetheless.. Simple and can be finished with easily.. I like how it goes from one story to the other and connects in a very good way.. And once it connects, it gets a lot more interesting..
Has a great moral value into it.. Loved the message of appreciation of time and life as a gift to be given and lived fully. We all tend to get caught up in life as we go into our daily grind.. This tells you to look a bit more into its details and stories..

this is NOT a light read, as a start.. considering that I had to translate/comprehend/critic the ideas all at once. It kinda took me 2 hours to finish 30 pages or so.. *english is my 2nd language here*.. The book starts so well into its core concept and it keeps going so thoroughly discussing the ideas and concepts. sometimes it goes all the way to the core of philosophy and logic and all these mind twisting concepts of error and wrong and emotion and perception.. At other chapters you feel like the introduction of the chapter never ends and takes so so long it kinda makes you lost and bored into it.. at others, it's like you're in a river of fluid stream of ideas so connected you don't feel yourself in its beauty.. but if there's one thing to notice, it's gonna be the effort the author put in compiling all the MASSIVE information of the different perspectives and sources and fields of knowledge it's admirable..
I love this book, it's one of those books you feel sad you finished, and you feel like you've changed your perspective about so many things in life after reading.. This is how I felt, at least..

Having read the Shadow of the wind's trilogy, this novel comes below bar to what Carlos should be writing..
It has its own different spirit compared to his own style. About superpowers and dark/gothic-ish mood, this might not be very satisfying to all.. I was kinda bored in the start and it was really slow in its developing, but the end was as usual, very intense, very emotional..
I wouldn't recommend it for guys new to Carlos Zafon, but I would recommend it to his fans though.. Falls more into the 3.5 region than the 3.. (less)
