The whole gang is back once again, but this time to focus is more on Basilard. There is also some development in the relationship between Sicarius and Amaranthe.
In Dark Currents we were shown some info about a job that Sicarius did in his past that greatly affected Basilard's people. Now that Basilard knows what Sicarius did he must decide if he is the one to avenge the grievous harm that was done to his people. Already an outcast due to his time as a pitfighting slave, he knows that he is the only one who can seek revenge. While Basilard is sorting through his conflict the team has their own difficulty to solve. The Imperial games are being held and some of the athletes are starting to disappear. In order to get an idea of what is going on Basilard enters the games. As a bonus, if he wins he will get to have dinner with the Emperor and bring attention to the plight of his people in slavery.
Lindsay continues to write fantastic stories. Her characters continue to come life as she gradually reveals more about them. The biggest downfall of the story is the end. There is a pretty big twist thrown in and now I am way too eager to read the next installment. (less)

I would say that to fully understand and enjoy these you must read The Emperor's Edge first. All of the stories contained in this collection deal with the continuing quest of Amaranthe and her band of outlaws. The characters are still written very well with good dialogue and I found some parts amusing as well. I think if you enjoyed The Emperor's Edge this collection is a must have.
I would highly recommend the works of author Lindsay Buroker to any lover of Fantasy, action or adventure! (less)

Gangsters are after her because they want the Flash Gold and we learn that the law is after Cedar, so we have many options for action here. Again with this chapter in the story, Ms Buroker provides us with excellent characterizations and wonderful character chatter. The witty banter between the two main characters provides the reader with depth of character and a genuine interest in their tale.
If I had one gripe to give, it was that this was actually too short and provided almost no forward movement for Kali or Cedar. Their relationship moved forward, and some might argue that is not necessarily a good thing if you like that sort of Moonlighting long running love dance thing, but the mystery of the Flash Gold, the sidebar tale of running from gangsters or running from the law did not progress at all. That said, I would still recommend this as the sorry was good, filled with action and mystery, and the characters are fully developed and interesting. (less)
I really liked the main character Amaranthe! She was strong, caring and for sure when she had something in mind there was no way not to achieve it. Even if that meant to team with the best assassin alive. I loved how she thought through all her moves and she wasn't afraid to risk it sometimes, the way she managed to convince people without violence (even thought someone of her company sometimes managed to mess things with his kills) and how she stayed loyal to what she believes.
It was an amazing adventure and i enjoyed every single page of it. (less)

Our hero is almost an anti-hero but you still root for him and look for the good in him. Besides he's damn sexy ;) You root for and love all the members of the Emperor's Edge. All of this is due to the main character. Amaranthe Lockdon is a girl that I would want to be best friends with and hell, I'd jump into her crazy schemes and still be laughing when I landed in jail. She is strong, independent, witty (LOVE the dialogue!), and human. She, the members of the Emperor's Edge and their shenanigans keep you coming back.
I really think it's the humor, camaraderie and the warmth between the group that makes this book more than just an action packed adventure steampunk/magic fantasy. You grow to care for these characters. And in my heart of hearts, that total book nerd that sill lives fist pumping away at books like these...I am a member of the Emperor's Edge. That's what these books do.
These books pull you into the adventure until you forget your surrounding and join the group. They make you laugh out loud, sigh, root for the characters, fall in love. Lindsay Buroker has that rare talent to make you feel as if you are a member of the team, living in the world she has created and running around with the gang. Sometimes, I look up from my Kindle and have to remember that I'm not in the Turgonian Empire running around with Books, Basilard, Maldynado, Akstyr, Sicarius and Amaranthe.(less)

It's a steampunk-type of adventure about a young woman who is being hunted for her dad's flash gold, an invention that's part alchemical and part magic and can potentially be an unlimited power source and allow the imprint of simple instructions to mechanical inventions.
The story is well-written and fast-paced with an emphasis on Kali, the young tinkerer who has recently been betrayed by her lover and is being sought for her father's invention. Kali wants nothing more than to get out of the Yukon and fly away to warmer climate and get away from all of the trouble so she can live in peace. A tall, dark stranger named Cedar offers to help her, but trust is not something Kali gives easily and she has good reason to question his intentions.
I highly recommend it. Can't wait to read the sequel ! (less)

Amaranthe returns with her gang to handle another magical threat to the young Emperor. After the confessions and threats of betrayal in EMPEROR'S EDGE the crew returns with Books taking the role of second POV character (instead of Sespian). While trying to save the empire both Books and Amaranthe are allowed to see a glimpse of what could have been. Books is given a chance to leave the crew, and Amaranthe gets to meet another female enforcer.
The author also sneaks in more details about the tight-lipped Sicarius, and another surprise confession at the end of the book.
I eagerly, and I do mean eagerly, look forward to the next in the series!(less)

Alternating action, discovery with great dialogue especially between Tikaya and Rias, and with several other compelling characters. The character development is good. We know what motivates the characters and what drives their likes/dislikes. The relationships that form do so naturally from the story and the dialogue.
The story setting is very good. There is an expansionist, steam-technology based, and militaristic empire. There is a Psi-based empire that is somewhat friendly. Then there is a peaceable nation caught between the two, that wants to be left alone, that is the home of our heroine. This world and conflict set the stage for the story.

Amaranthe and Sicarius are in the midst of another grueling training session when they come across evidence of wrongdoing against the Empire. Amaranthe convinces Sicarius they need to investigate, and from there launches a Halloween-ish chapter in the daily lives of Buroker's biggest characters.
"The Assassin's Curse" reveals a bit more of Sicarius' back story, but mainly, it's just a fun read. If I had to quibble, I could wish for some indication of where in the series timeline the story takes place. After the first novel? Second? Third? Neither the dialogue nor the plot make it clear, and the answer would change the way readers interpret the scenes between Amaranthe and Sicarius.(less)

What more could you ask for in a book? I found this book to be a quick entertaining read. Some people say it was very descriptive, I found it just descriptive enough to keep me engaged. It wasn't really steampunk in my mind, more just a gritty zombie fiction than anything with five or six references to steam driven machines. (less)

I hope I don't have too long to wait for the next episode in these steampunk adventures of a self-taught tinkerer and her bounty hunter business partner.
Kali and Cedar are tremendous fun. Especially because the scrapes Kali gets into (and gets herself out of) read like a Girl's Own Adventure version of the Perils of Pauline. Or maybe more like "Dudley Do-right and Snidely Whiplash"? But in Ms. Buroker's tales, Kali McAlister never waits for any man to rescue her, and her partner Cedar is much, much smarter than Dudley ever hoped to be.
Again, the story is fast-paced and full of action. The loose ends are wrapped up except for a few in the over-arching story that have been there since the first book. I'm expecting and looking forward to another sequel.
