I didn't exactly want to give it five stars because there were times when I was seriously bored, but I couldn't give it 4.5 stars so I just rounded up.
I decided to read this book on a whim. When I was younger I used to love the animated series that'd come on HBO. That's really what made me want to read the book. I had to see if the book was anything like the cartoon, which it wasn't. And I had to see if the book was any good. I really didn't expect to like it as much as I did, so I was happily surprised.
This book is really two stories in one. I liked the first better, the one following Atreyu, but both were good. I loved in the first half when Atreyu ran into that giant wolf. The one that had planned to kill him. I can't remember the wolf's name, but that scene was probably my favorite part of the book. That or at the very end when Bastian had to forget everything.
The characters were amazing, I loved every single last one of them, especially Bastian. He was my favorite. It was interesting how Bastian changed so much when he went to Fantastica. And honestly I can't really remember why he changed so much, or understand, but that's just one reason why I'll have to read this book again.
I loved the themes: friendship, love, just be yourself and be happy with yourself, and there were so many more. This book was so layered.
When I get older and have children of my own I will definitely read this book to them. This book was amazing, it's so hard for me to explain it completely. But I honestly think that everyone should read The Neverending Story. I can't imagine anyone not liking it....more
