Initially I was not sure that the book would be for me when I heard about it. But it is Laura Bickle we’re speaking about and so far I have not been disappointed by one of her novels. It was finally a good thing to try this adventure as the author conquered me again. Here we find a very original story mixing alchemy, mystery, murder, and magic.
Petra went to Temperance after a difficult history that left her a little disoriented. This city is the last known place of her father years before and the young woman hopes now to find him. Yet her research will quickly get complicated when she realizes that this place contains many secrets. Two powerful characters of the city compete in secret. It’s quite difficult to identify exactly what they are and what they really want to achieve, but one thing is sure, they are ready to do anything to achieve their goals. Accompanied by a coyote with whom she befriended, Petra finds herself in the middle of the intrigues of the city. Indeed, she finds a kind of compass on her land and it seems that the boy who calls himself the Alchemist is determined to get it back! But on top of that, she is interested in Gabriel and tries to understand him. This is a man who works for Sal and it looks like everyone avoids these people at all costs. The guy has many secrets and even though she knows that discovering everything could be dangerous, Dee is determined to understand what’s going on, especially when bodies start to appear all over town.
I enjoyed discovering our heroine, she tries to understand what is happening in this strange city, without forgetting that her primary purpose is to find her father. She will end in a story completely beyond her but always accompanied by her friends. I loved her relationship with coyote, this animal who appreciates her but who is not so ordinary. It’s funny to see how the two will become inseparable over the chapters. And then there was this man … Oh Gabe is very difficult to define and to understand. He’s hiding something and has some quite extraordinary powers and I was very curious to learn the truth about him. Besides, I have to say I was very surprised because the author had some very interesting and different ideas while creating a new myth.
I will not say more because we discover many things in the story, but in any case I was very interested from beginning to end and I hope we’ll have a sequel soon because I’m curious to see what happens to the characters after that. Laura Bickle once again presents a book at the height of her previous writings....more
I have a major weakness when it comes to faes so when I saw the novel, I was immediately intrigued. All this was confirmed as soon as I started reading it and when I was completely swept away by the story.
I was a little surprised at first because the format is a little different from what is usually found in urban fantasy. Indeed, we follow here the POV of several characters moving around Brianna, though she remains central and recurring in the history compared to the others. I was a bit scared to see that we were left with a lot of characters without really connecting them, but this is not the case at all in this novel. Even if we follow different persons, especially Nick, Liu, and Brianna, it helps us understanding everything, especially as they advance together in the early chapters.
Brianna is a princess, the daughter of the king of the fae, but her half-human side has always set her slightly back from her siblings, especially when we know that her mother was considered as a criminal in this parallel world. This is also why the young woman lives among humans and avoids all the political shenanigans. Alas, her world will change when she finds herself attacked in her home by a variety of pixies. Accompanied by her best friend David and his brother Nick (who does not really believe in magic), our three protagonists will go in Faery to realize that troubles are just beginning. Yes, as the veil between the worlds only allows partly human individuals to go through, faes can not kidnap anyone as they used to. But the arrival of Nick and David will raise many desires and it will be very difficult for Brianna to manage all the problems it generates. But in addition to this, our heroine will also have to face the consequences of a big change: it seems that her latest actions have placed her on the list of possible heirs to the throne, something she did not really want. Political intrigues, conspiracies, betrayals, are present here.
I really enjoyed Brianna! This is a girl who really loves her father and she is willing to do anything to help the people she cares of. She is strong and courageous, but she is not really interested in becoming a sovereign. No, she only hopes to live a quiet life away from everything. Alas, it seems that all this seems impossible when on her way home, she finds herself in the midst of a political intrigue. I also loved to discover more about the faes, although eventually we still have a lot to understand as how this world is truly governed. We learn a little bit about Brianna’s past and what she had endured to get there. Liu, the king, is an interesting protagonist to discover because of his different facets, the father and the king often compete.
But as I said, we also follow Nick… Ah Nick… We feel that there is an attraction between the two characters and at the same time there is no time for anything, I’m curious to see if we feel something more present in the next volumes. The only things that disturbed me a little are all the stories with the police in the human world. I admit that I had trouble seeing why Brianna was the suspect, and why everyone was interested in her that way, but this is ultimately a detail.
In any case, I had a great time with this novel. We have a good introduction to the series. It takes us from the first chapter and we’re pleased until the end. I am now very curious to read more to find out the next Brianna’s actions, especially after such a purpose. A very good story to discover!...more
I did not know that this was the last volume of the series before reading it and I admit that I am a little sad to leave behind the characters I’ve learned to discover and to love. But much to say right now, I think this was my favorite volume. I enjoyed all the novels in the series, but it’s true that for the others that it took me a few chapters to really get into the stories. Here, surprisingly, this has not been the case and I was carried away by the adventures of this couple from the first chapter. It must be said that both characters have plenty to do!
As I said, we find our two heroes in Merenwyn, facing many new events. Yes, because one thing is certain, they do not have the time to get bored! Even if they are together in this new world that Hedi is discovering, they will soon be separated and our heroine will find herself left alone. We discover with her how the fae and the werewolves live together (in a rather difficult way it must be said), but we also learn a little more about the Magi and of course her twin brother. New characters appear, who will attend our heroine in her mission and that we learn to discover about.
Gone to achieve a specific event, our couple will end in a story that transcends them completely. Many things are added and Trowbridge is determined to do the best to help the werewolves he had left behind him to find his mate. Hedi has evolved a lot over the novels, she knows that she is not a savior, she does not want to be one which is quite nice to see. She only wants to save her twin brother and to return quietly home with the man she loves. Unfortunately nothing is easy. It is perfectly clear that they love each other deeply, but the previous novels have changed them and it’s true that nothing is as easy as it was before. They must learn to know each other to progress.
In all cases this novel was a very good conclusion, a very good story and I was glad to have the chance to follow our hero until the end to see how it was resolved....more
I had a good time with the first book, and I was curious to discover this one. I also think that it’s my favorite as it’s dedicated to the future of Levaal and the adventures of the characters.
Early in the novel, we follow several people alternately. I was interested in each of their history, without knowing how they would all be linked in the end. Still advancing in the chapters, their destiny meets and the protagonists will cross the path to the others to continue their adventures together. We thus find that Eric has evolved considerably since the first book to finally find a place in this world so different from his. But it’s not just him, we also follow the daughter of Vous, a character I loved to discover and to understand better elsewhere. She has always been locked in a gilded cage and can finally see the world without knowing what to actually do. Of course we also meet with her father and we witness his descent increasingly into madness, something that is quite difficult it must be said. Other players are also highlighted here, but I’ll let you discover them. I’ll only speak of Shadow, which comes fairly recurrent. A shadow strangely looking like Eric, a man who wants to find a goal with his life, without really understanding what is happening.
So yes you can see, there are a lot of things here. I often struggle with multiple points of view, but that’s not really the case here as everyone moves together in the end. We have some glimpses about the dragons in the story, including the Levaal’s history and the impact they had here. I found it all very interesting and it’s true that I was easily swept away by the history. I’m curious to see what volume 3 will reserve us for the future now....more
I’m always drawn to novels featuring ghosts and this one was no exception. It must be said that the cover was fun and I was curious to see how the story would be.
First of all I must say that I was surprised to see the format that the author has chosen to present with this volume. Indeed in the story we follow Dymphna Campbell and Kelpie two young different women but who find themselves together with their ability to see ghosts. Each chapter is from the point of view of one of the two and the events progress like that. But in addition to this, between each two chapters we also have something very different, some ideas of the other characters, the Kelpie’s past; parts which were ultimately not a progress on the story, but that gives us a better idea on the characters. I confess that I had a little trouble to be really interested in these chapters, in what was happening, I wanted to go back to the events. I’m not saying it was not interesting but it is true that I was a little disturbed in my reading pace. After, as I said it’s not a bad thing because the story is very well done and interesting.
The world in which we find ourselves is led by two major Mafia members, a woman, Glory and a man, M. Davidson, two enemies who live together in a kind of uneasy peace. Yet all this will change with Dymphna, a young beautiful girl working for the woman but that Mr. Davidson is determined to recover. In addition to this, as always, the last Dymphna’s boyfriend is found shot/dead … why is that? That’s the big question, but they all end up in the same condition. While she is in a difficult situation, the girl meets with Kelpie, a person she is determined to help! Yes, because unlike her, Kelpie can not separate her world and the spirit’s and she is assaulted by all that is happening. But while the two team up together, they learn to understand, to trust and to need the one and the other, they will also have to help each other to survive whatever happen. In this way, we also have two very different boys but who have a little place in our heart, two people who will help the girls for their own reasons.
I was really curious to see how our two heroines would handle everything, how they would be able to survive what was happening and I admit that the author has really created a very interesting story for it. I will not go into details but it’s fascinating to see the life they follow, and finally even if they have the same age, they are completely different. One seems more adult, more responsible, while the other seems to be a little girl, not really knowing what it means to live.
It was a very interesting and different novel, and I took great pleasure in following the story. I wonder if there will be a sequel later or if it is the only novel but in any case I’m curious....more
When I heard about the book, I was immediately curious. The daughter of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? How not to be? We all know this mythical character that is often found in TV shows, movies or books, and I was excited to be able to discover his daughter here. But it’s not just that because I had two other reasons that made me want to get into this first volume. First of all the significant number of very good reviews about the novel! Oh yes, because everyone made me impatient to be able to discover the story. Then we have the author. Viola Carr is a pseudonym for Erica Hayes, someone who always makes me have a great time with her books. So yes, I was waiting to read this first volume to discover the history and to know how it really was.
So we discover Eliza, a young woman well on all reports, if not her work that does not glorify her in the eyes of society. Yes, because instead of sitting quietly at home and seeking for a husband, our heroine is a doctor who works as an investigator with the police, trying to catch the killers on the loose. But Eliza hides many secrets, some that could put her life in danger. In a world where magic is condemned and where the alchemists and other people practicing magic are burned without distinction, our doctor has a second whole person in herself … A person who can take control of her body, transforming her into a new woman who has her own objectives. So yes, Eliza must be very careful, as well as her alter ego Lizzie. Yet they form together a wonderful team, each can help the other, but still remaining always in competition.
It was fascinating to discover that character, understand her different aspects, to see what Lizzie and Eliza were hidding. They are both complementary, two sides of the same person and even if they sometimes seem to hate each other, rebel against one another, they are also there to support and protect the other.
In terms of history, many things happen in the novel. Oh yeah! A member of the Royal Society is in the city and seems strangely present around our heroine. Alas, this association eradicates people like herself, and Eliza, as well as Lizzie, will have to implement all their skills to keep their secret. Yet they may well be surprised by this man. It must be said that Captain Lafayette also seems to have different facets while he meets either of the girls. This man hides a dark past and very mysterious drawings but I was very curious to discover everything. I also confess that the revelations about him really surprised me.
Eliza will have to investigate one of the strangest murders here. Young women are found dead, bits of their body missing, all with rather strange clues. Whatever happens, the young woman is determined to understand what is happening, although it makes her face her own demons. We have many surprises in the novel, revelations that leave us shocked and I think we can only be completely fascinated by the story and the characters. Viola Carr has created a fantastic novel that carries us over the chapters. I am very happy to have had the chance to read it all and I’m more than impatient to read on! Oh yes, the wait is going to be complicated. If you like mysteries, secrets, magic and stories with a unique note, do not hesitate, you will be delighted....more
After seeing a lot of very good reviews for this novel, I was very curious to dive myself in the history. I must say that Bear presents a very original story that takes us into the shallows of Seattle. Here, we have no real knight in white armor, but a story featuring courtesans, terrible pimps and an investigation by a man traveling all around the world.
I was quite surprised by the novel, it does not follow the tracks usually found. No, our heroine doesn’t begin a love affair with the officer she is helping. In fact, she starts a story with a girl she saves and takes under her wing. Yet their story is rather clumsy, and advances slowly, with a little something that evolves over the novel. I may have been carried away a little less by this relationship, but I still found it very touching.
Karen is a young woman who has gone through many trials. She does not go into the details of her work, but we see all what she had endured, the knit group of the girls who work together as a family. It was touching to see that they were actually a real family and remain desperate to help whatever happens. Besides Karen is herself determined to help this young Indian, Priya, who came seeking for a sanctuary in their hotel. Unfortunately her arrival brings many new problems that will only amplify. All this put Karen in the midst of danger and an investigation on a device that seems to be able to manipulate the minds and actions of each person. Alas, you can imagine that this machine should not end in the hands of a bad person.
It was a different and interesting novel. Our heroine is a very interesting character to explore and to see evolving. She is quite shy and yet does not hesitate to take action when necessary. She has dreams she wants to realize and we wish her to be so. We can easily get touched by her as we discover her more and more in the chapters. A novel worth reading it....more
I do not know if you know Kristen Callihan, but one thing is for sure, she manages every time to delight me with her novels. Oh yes, this author has an incredible gift and she carries us every time with her stories featuring some new really fascinating characters. Of course, as always, we find many former protagonists and we learn more about the secondary’s. Here, we therefore find Eliza and Adam discovered earlier.
In the previous volume, our young heroine Eliza was released from the strings that Adam had placed on her since she was dead. Her freedom was something she wanted more than anything and we can understand that after all she has endured. Yet it seems that she left behind her a cage to be placed in another one. Mab is hiding many secrets that will completely change the situation concerning the behavior of the young woman and her brother Mallan also has a great role to play in this. It must be said that the two have both their own objectives but it always concerns Adam and Eliza. Our two heroes will then have to team up together to avoid the schemes provided for them. Yet it is very difficult for our young heroine to trust the man who enslaved her. Conversely, Adam is determined to end his curse and it means to connect with Eliza, her soul mate and to show her that they can be much more despite what he did to her, what he made her endure.
I loved the story of this couple. Nothing is easy for them. Eliza does not succumb directly to his attraction, she is quite suspicious, especially after all the events and whatever happens, she tries to stay away from him. Starting the novel, it is very easy to understand the young woman but much less Adam. Still, while getting to know him, knowing his reasons, we assimilate why he did so even though it was not a good idea. Then I must say that our hero does all he can to make amends so she can finally trust him, so she opens herself even if he is in a bad shape.
As I said we also see the appearance of the characters we love like the Archer’s couple or Evernight’s and we even have the chance to catch a glimpse of the person who will be put forward in the following adventures of our characters. In all cases I still had an incredible time once again with this novel. We have a great really compelling plot and we remain fascinated by the characters and their actions....more
