This is a historic fiction young adult novel set in Spain primarily, but that also visits Italy.
Juan is a young slave in a noble Spanish family during the 17th century. It didn't necessarily seem like the best premise for a book, but Juan becomes the property of Diego Velázquez and begins to work in his studio. This book was written in 1965, but seems ahead of it's time politically. It's written from the perspective of Juan de Pareja and gives an unromantic account of slavery in 17th century Spain.
I love art and art history, so this book appealed to me in the technical description of the process of oil painting. Through working with and amid Velázquez's studio, Juan begins a secret practice of his own art. Slaves in Spain are not allowed to practice fine art. If slaves are found painting or sculpting the penalty can be as severe as death. Juan hides his blossoming talent and love of art.
This is an incredible story, one that is enriched if the paintings that are written about are examined further. (less)

I may be a sucker for books about kids trying to make it despite all adversities, and only a small cute animal to help them along. This is a quick read with an excellent plot, plenty of danger, adventure, and historic information.
This novel is an interesting look at Japanese occupied China during WWII. Japanese soldiers are bombing villages and killing families. American troops are the "good guys" in this novel. It's different to imagine that the United States and China were strong allies at one time.
