Alarcon uses his family members as inspiration for his poems. You learn that he lived in Los Angeles, the importance of his mother and grandmother in his life and the customs and celebrations his family participated in through his life. I enjoyed the poems Spanish versions and how the rhythm of the words came together.(less)

Bernier-Grand puts together a wonderful collection of poems that cover Cesar Chavez life and the struggles he faced when organizing the migrant workers of California. Beside learning about a variety of events that led to the formation of the union for farm workers we learn about his family and how they influenced him. I loved the poems. This would be a wonderful addition to a classroom library.(less)

I enjoyed this book because it was about a person in history and I do like the historical fiction genre. I had never seen a book that was based on Coretta Scott, so it was interesting to read about the Civil Rights Movement, from a different perspective. The illustrations by Kadir Nelson are rich, realistic and colorful. Visually the book is amazing. This book can be used to introduce a lesson on the Civil Rights Movement to young children.(less)

One is able to sympathize with him by feeling what he was experiencing. You feel sad for him and at times you want to cry. Woodson's lyrical voice captures Lonnie's feeling and ideas perfectly. I do not particularly like poetry but I did enjoy this book.(less)

We learn about a boy named Jack who tells his story about his reluctance in writing poetry (I can relate to this-I hate poetry). He describes his struggle with poetry prose. By the end of the book he accepts his talent and starts appreciating poetry. My daughter, who is in 5th grade, enjoyed the book.(less)

The story of a young girl and her father as they go out one night to looks for owls was enjoyable. The language the author uses to describe the natural world was very descriptive. An example of this rich language is… "The snow below it was whiter than the milk in a cereal bowl." I liked the image it created in my mind. The illustrations complemented the text. I especially liked the last illustration of the girl being carried by the father as they walk back to their home.(less)
