While I had a hard time putting this book down, eager to discover what next the man and boy would encounter, I feel like the plot, environment, and characters are weak. Now that I've finished the book, I'm looking back and wondering what I got out of it: not much, I think.
Two sad, desperate people on "the road" eternally, it seems, too afraid to seek out anyone, becoming more frail and hungry after each stop. The only part of the novel that resonated with me was how the boy asks the father several times, "Are we the good guys?", to which the father always replies, "Yes", and at the end when the boy tells the man something like "We're not good people. We didn't do good for anybody." It made me wonder whether a person can really be "good" or "evil" when civilization is gone and there's barely enough food to get through a day. A bleak, depressing novel that I would have enjoyed more if it had richer content. I didn't like the writing style or the plot, which I think can really be summed up in a few lines. (less)
