I thought I was getting some sort of wild west mystery, turns out it is San Fransisco in 1894. With Sherlock Holmes as a minor character, or at least someone who thinks he is Sherlock. Really enjoyed the characters, as well as the two cases the detectives are working on. Looking forward to the next in the series.(less)

EJ is still working security at the mall, with a new (very unqualified) boss. Her bad knee is really acting up, I wonder if she will find a different dream besides police work. Her father is staring in a movie shooting at the mall, and when someone is murdered, EJ is determined to find out who the culprit is. Love the characters, in this one we find out a bit more about the mysterious Jay. You don't have to have read the first two books to follow along with the story. Looking forward to the next segment.(less)

This time the person murdered is one that Hannah used to know quite well, an old professor from college. I think I would have enjoyed the book more if Hannah had been more of a suspect, and if she would have been forced to come clean with the true nature of their relationship. (less)

I don't know what it was about this one, I just didn't care for it as much. I have not read the series in any kind of order, just skip around and check out what's available. That may have been part of my problem. I don't enjoy Mike's relationship with Hannah, and it bugs me that she lets him use her in this book for help in his investigation. I did read a comment from a reviewer that Hannah is too goody-two-shoes; she is, but usually that just adds to the charm of her character for me. I will point out that there were some good cookie recipes in here which I hope to try making some day.(less)

There is also the mystery of Buckshaw and what will happen to their family home. A few new characters in this one. I do wish she would have had more interaction with Inspector Hewitt. I hope in future books her friendship with Jocelyn will continue, that story would be nice to see. It does end with a bit of a cliff hanger, looking forward to that resolution in the next book.(less)

Much shorter than the typical Macbeth mystery, this was perfect to read on a plane ride. We find out in the small villages of Scotland most villagers do not paricipate in Christmas celebrations (at least publically), due to a belief that Christmas is in fact a pagan holiday. Macbeth has two cases he is working on - a missing cat, and some missing lights. No murder in this one. Typical of Macbeth, as he is working his cases, he is also working on the happiness of his village. I have been reading the series completely out of order, and finally hit the book where he gets his dog, Lugs, although it was a bit anti-climactic after wondering about it for quite a few books. Overall a fun, quick Christmas read.(less)

There is a lot of cookie baking going on throughout the book. Hannah runs a bakery in a small Minnesota town. At the end of most chapters is a recipe for a cookie that she has made. They all sound delicious. The story was a fun cozy mystery; Hannah finds a body in the jacuzzi of the health club. The lead detectives in the police force are all pulled off the case for personal reasons - and none of them have alibis. Apparently Hannah is well known in town for solving cases, and she is approached by many to work on this one. I enjoyed it, and was surprised by "who done it" at the end.(less)

This book (and I assume the series) is told from Chet's perspective. I found it to be quite charming and funny. Definitely different from your average murder mystery. Bernie gets hired by the mayor's office to keep an eye on a famous actor (and keep him out of trouble) when a film crew comes into town. Homicides begin to occur, and Bernie and Chet are on the job. I think Chet is a keeper and plan to go back and start at the beginning of this series.(less)

Really enjoy the characters, especially the relationship between E.J. and her ex-CIA grandpa. In this book, a dead body turns up outside the mall in an area where the security cameras have been broken. Then E.J's boss goes missing. E.J. starts investigating, even though the police don't welcome her help. A fun mystery, looking forward to the next installment.(less)

When a hit-and-run occurs outside the Village Blend, Clare is once again helping with the investigation. Things get a little dicey when she finds out what Matteo has been up to in Brazil. A fun read with a few twists.
There were some great recipes at the end of the book, we ate for a week off of Matteo's Carnitas, pasta sauce, black beans, and Clare's taco cups. First time I've made a recipe from these books, and they were are delicious. (less)

With another murder in his village of Lochdubh, and his superior Blair eager to pin the murder on Hamish, he must get to the bottom of things himself. I have read the series completely out of order, reading the new ones when they are released, and picking up the older ones in whatever order I find them in. This was a delightful read, as always.(less)

While she had previously promised everyone that her sleuthing days were over, of course she must investigate to clear her father's name. Another fun read, the characters are quite enjoyable. A new face popped up in this book, PI Jake Murch, I do hope we see more of him in the future. Fans of Gordon Tandy will be disappointed though, he is MIA for the majority of this Liss Maccrimmon mystery.(less)

This was another fun read. I havent read the first two books in a while, but this one seemed to be told more from Gigi's point of view than the first two. The novel switched between first person Gigi and third person Charlie perspectives. Swift Investigations is hired to find Gigi's ex-husband Les. And the person doing the hiring is none other than the woman Les left Gigi for, Heather-Anne.
There were parts of this book that had me laugh out loud. I love the partnership of Charlie and Gigi and how it is evolving over the course of the series. This was another fun mystery and I look forward to reading the next in the series.(less)

She has quit caring about her appearance (or hygiene for that matter), her daughter is out of control, she is a complete embarrassment to her son, has zero friends, and something feels off in her marriage. She joins the school PTA in an effort to pull herself out of this depression. Then the bottom hits - Elaine realizes that her husband is having an affair with his secretary - one that the PTA leaders already knew about. They ship her off to Las Vegas and essentially kidnap her children to keep Elaine quiet while they teach her husband and his lover a lesson. At this point Elaine realizes something is truly wrong - should she sit back in Las Vegas and enjoy her time, or go up against the PTA Mafia?
This book is a lighthearted quick read. It is more fantasy/romance than mystery. I found I had trouble identifying with Elaine as a mother. Big thanks to goodreads, I won this book in their giveaway program.(less)

It takes place entirely at Buckshaw during Christmas. A movie crew is filming at the house, and half of the village turns up to watch a scene from "Romeo and Juliet." Due to bad weather, no one can leave - the perfect time for a murder. Flavia uses her wits and chemistry to once again catch the killer (and also try to ensnare good old St. Nick on the side). At times it is easy to forget that she is only 11. A lot of favorite characters from previous novels are back.(less)

Her mother died when she was a baby, leaving Flavia with her stamp collecting father, and two older sisters who love to torture her.
Flavia is on the case when a gypsy woman staying on her land is beaten and almost killed, and then another dead body shows up on her property. The character reminds me a little of Emma in Martha Grime's Hotel Paradise series, but I enjoyed Flavia so much more. Also, this book actually had a plot, instead of the random meandering I found with Hotel Paradise. I look forward to other outings with Flavia and her chemistry lessons.(less)

Ferris as much as I had liked Charlie Swift? The answer is YES. This was a fun read, with lots of humor. I connected with the characters right from the start, and enjoyed every page. This is the beginning of a great new series, I can't wait to see what is in store for E.J. and company. (less)

Hamish and Priscilla are unofficially engaged, and things are not going well for the couple. Priscilla is starting to shop for houses in Strathbane, with the hope that Hamish will get a promotion. Of course, as readers know, Hamish loves his life in the village of Lochdubh, and has no intention on leaving. To avoid Priscilla, Hamish begins to get involved in matters in the small village of Drim. Soon he's got a missing person and a possible murder to deal with. A quick, fun read. As always, a pleasure to spend time with Hamish, but we don't see much of his Lochdubh neighbors in this book.(less)
