Alexandra is a woman on a mission. She must find a husband or the King will choose for her. As a widow, she was no stranger to the ways of men. However, this Princess was no match for the drunken lonely Earl, Kintore.
When I started reading this novella I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about Alexandra. She seemed a bit self-centered and childish with her request to travel across the country due to boredom Let’s me just say, it must be nice to be able to just up and leave life as she knew it to go across the country on a whim.
Now she was dressed as a maid to hide her royalty since she didn’t wish to be burdened with taking more of an escort than she must. So when Kintore entered the Inn’s private parlor that Alexandra just happened to be in as well … things went from bad to worse.
He decided that a little action wouldn’t be bad and since he thought her a maid no one would care. Well, things heated up and Alexandra’s guard came in and caught them. You can imagine that this did not end well for Kintore. He was knocked out cold by the giant bear of a man, Doya.
And the fun begins. Alexandra wishes for a tryst and Kintore finds some hidden strength to try to remain unaffected by this foreign Princess and dodge her marriage plot.
But life… “life should be lived-with love and passion.” Kintore finds that his strength might not be enough to keep him from succumbing to what his heart desires.

“‘Twas the night after Christmas, and all through the place, the only ones stirring were the lord and his mate.”
“That is an awful rhyme.”
“Shh, I’m not done.” He rose with her in his arms, and headed for the door. “They went off to nestle all snug in their bed, while visions of lovemaking danced in their heads.”
She eyed him suspiciously. “Is this the naughty version of the Poem?”
“No.” He stared down into the face of the woman who’d become dearer to him than life. Who made his life richer and fuller, and decidedly more interesting with each passing day. “It’s the version for men who are in love with their wives.”
She smiled up at him, that same love shining in her face.
“Then carry on, sir.”
“And Mama, quite naked, and I naked, too-”
“”Pierce!” she cried, half laughing, half chiding.
“Oh, all right,” he said as he carried her up the stairs. “I suppose it is the naughty version.”
Pierce Waverly, the Earl of Devonmont, is Ms. Jeffries next victim in her Hellions of Halstead Hall series. I have to admit I was excited to see another book in that series. I have loved watching all the Sharpe siblings find their match and was not ready to let them go. As you can imagine, It was a bittersweet moment when the last Sharpe succumbed to her HEA. Of course, when I saw this book I had to read it. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
We first meet Mr. Waverly in To Wed A Wild Lord. He happens to be the cousin of Virginia We also know he wrecked havoc with poor Gabe due to his love and protective nature towards the Waverly’s.
In this book we find out why there is such a strong bond between him and his cousins. I won’t lie. A few tears were shed and I wanted to yell at a character or two.
Let me start at the beginning.
Pierce was a small sickly boy who suffered from asthma. His father thought he was worthless and would not live to take over the Earldom. His mother was a kind sweet spirit and when he was a child she would go out of her way to make him feel special, loved.
All of that ended one tragic day. Pierce, as a boy, didn’t realize that when he went back to school in his eighth year of life that he would no longer be permitted in his childhood home. His mother made arrangements for him to spend summers and holidays with his cousins, the Waverly’s.
He felt lost and hurt even with the letters his mother sent and continued to send for a time. Like all little children, he blamed himself for his parents problems. Pierce made a vow to be the best son he could. He would succeed in school and horseback riding in order to be permitted to come home.
The years came and went with fewer letters and eventually none were sent. Pierce continued to hold out hope until an incident so tragic that he could not overlook or excuse behavior. After that he did anything to wreak havoc on his father’s name. The name Pierce Waverly meant trouble would follow.
Our story begins when an unexpected letter appears from his mother’s companion, Mrs. Camilla Stuart. He was informed that his mother’s health was declining and to come before it was too late. Even though Pierce could not forgive his mother of her betrayal to him, he also could not let her die before saying goodbye. So off he went to visit his mother.
Camilla Stuart, could not believe that a son could live so close and refuse to visit or answer any letters his mother had sent. As Christmas was approaching the look of sadness and weariness began to get worse. Camilla had enough. Being an orphan, she understood the need to have and hold onto the family you were blessed with, no matter what.
She devised a plan. She would send an urgent letter and he would either come or not. She assumed not and then she would tell all and the hope that the countess’ son would ever come to see her would be gone. No more wondering or waiting. Things can either be righted or put to rest.
To her dismay and fear Pierce showed up concerned for his mother and that concern had her stumbling to make everything right. However, the relationship between mother and son was worse than expected. Her plan was up the minute he took control. A new plan was laid by a compromise. He would have dinner with his mother if she entertained him after.
I know what you are thinking and Camilla put her foot down. Even though she was a widow, she refused to sleep with the head of the household, her boss. Pierce gave into her demands and the compromise stood. But the attraction that they had towards each other was more than they bargained for. Worse, Camilla had a few secrets that she should not, could not, nor would not give up.
As their little game commenced, each trying to get what they wanted, they realize that they were in too deep, too fast. Time may not heal all wounds and a mother would do anything to protect her child. But who is protecting whom and from what? I shall say no more. You must go and read it for yourself to find out how it all works out, if in fact it does.
I want to say Thank You to Simon & Schuster as well as Edelweiss for providing me with a copy of this book for an honest review. It was a joy to read especially with Christmas right around the corner....more

Things I enjoyed: *I loved that Anna was not a wilting flower and took her and her sisters future in hand. It is always great to read about siblings supporting/loving each other. *Morgan was an unexpected delight. She was deaf through most of the book, however with Valentine's help she regained her hearing. It was a touching moment when Val shared his gift of music with her. *Devlin St.Just was the unknown. Being the elder brother and bastard of their Father. He has a soft spot for is brothers. In the end he was one of my favorites. *Last, but not least Gayle Windham the dashing Earl of Westhaven and the Heir. He courts Anna and rushes in the save the day many times. You can't help but love him. *Favorite side character was Lord Amery.
Wishes: *I wish I knew more about Gwen and Douglass's story. Awesome couple!
Quotes: "I love you, he thought, because you are honest with me and because you are willing to speak the truth to me when others might seek to curry favor instead. I love you because you are in this bed with me, not trying to conceive the much-awaited next generation of Windhams, but just holding my hand.
"Even when I cried,” she said, a world of resignation in her tone, “I was glad to be here with you, Westhaven. Believe that, if you believe nothing else of me.” What she had meant was: Even when I cried because I must leave you, I was glad to be here with you… Believe that if you believe nothing else of me when I find the courage to finally go."...more

Things I liked: *It shows that love and hate are a closer emotion than you think. *Great ending where the guy gets the girl. *Love Thomas's mother. She helped mellow the book out. *I also loved Thomas's sister Missy and her hubby Rutherford. There were many funny scene's at their home.
Things that annoyed me: *Amelia and Thomas run hot and cold. It was hard to follow their emotional tennis match. *Amelia was a little to head strong and Thomas lied to himself too often. *Slow plot, but predictable once it got started. *Could have cut out Louisa's part entirely.

Recommend: Those looking for an original Historical Romance Series that follows a loving family. Excellent for YA and Adults alike.
Things I loved: *Always inspiring to read a book about how a child overcomes a set back/disability. Simon Basset stuttered and grew up to speak perfect. *Daphne was every mans friend, but no ones love till Simon showed up. *Unexpected/sweet moment when Simon brought flowers to Violet, Daphne's widowed mother! *Thought it was wonderful to see all brothers pull together and challenge Simon for Daphne. Those Bridgerton's!!!! *Excellent story about how a pretend courtship can turn into the real thing in a blink of an eye.
Tense Moments: *There is a Duel at Dawn! *I despise Simon's Dad, Horrible man! *Simon leaves Daphne after an incident. They were married before this incident, just fyi.
Quotes: "Where is he? Bridgerton!" he bellowed. Three chestnut heads swiveled in his direction. Simon stomped across the grass, murder in his eyes. "I meant the idiot Bridgerton." "That, I believe," Anthony said mildly, tilting his chin toward Colin, "would refer to you."
"His mouth captured hers, trying to show her with his kiss what he was still learning to express in words. He loved her. He worshipped her. He'd walk across fire for her. He— —still had the audience of her three brothers. Slowly breaking the kiss, he turned his face to the side. Anthony, Benedict, and Colin were still standing in the foyer. Anthony was studying the ceiling, Benedict was pretending to inspect his fingernails, and Colin was staring quite shamelessly." ...more

Positives: *Alexia kicks butt well being preg. She kicks her sorry husband's but into gear as well. *Channing comes in as the Knight in Shining armor, you get to see a better side of him. *Lord Maccon is still just as stubborn, but comes through for Alexia even in his state of drunkeness. *Happy ending and great lead into the next book.
Negatives: *Not a huge fan of the way Lord Maccon throw Alexia out to fend for herself while pregnant. Kinda pissed me off most of the book, although he came around to his senses. *You got to see more of her fathers past, but I wish more was said on the matter. Kinda left of open ended thoughts/sentences.
"You remember that groveling business we once discussed during your initial courtship of the young lady?" "Not that again." "Oh, no, not precisely. I was thinking, given her flight from London and the generally slanderous gossip that has resulted and permeated the society papers ever since, that public groveling is called for under such circumstances." "What? No, I absolutely refuse." "Oh,I don't believe you have a choice, my lord...."

"Yes, I'm too mad to punish you right now. We'll talk about it when we get home. Go brush your teeth, comb your hair, put on dry clothes, and get the guns. We're going to Wal-Mart."
"I've never created a riot before. I did cause a brawl at the last formal. A large number of young women there actually arrived with the expectation of seducing me into matrimony, and a couple of their mothers came to blows. It was hilari - I mean, dreadful. Simply dreadful."
