Recommendation : If you enjoy books like the Percy Jackson series, about a boy coming of age with challenges and danger all around than give this book a try. It really does stand out among the Young Adult Paranormal Genre.
Look at that cover! I love it! Love. It.
I absolutely love books that are not the typical girl or guy on the cover. I love trying to figure out what part of the book resembles the cover, it’s like a game of pictionary but more like covionary. lol Okay I am done with that. You get the idea.
This book hooked me from the beginning. Now you will have to forgive me because while I was reading this I kept flashing to Percy Jackson. If you know the series I am talking about than you know how awesome it was so seriously give this book a try!
Chase Williams has blond hair and blue eyes but the overall feel that Logan Lerman had in the movie is how I picture Chase. That kid that knows he has to do what needs to be done and just does it. He takes no shit from people but he still makes mistakes because he is at that point in life where he is transitioning from teenager to adult.
Now back to what I was saying about the beginning of the book. We get a glimpse of what Chase might be before we get a flashback.
“I knew the scratches would fade, the scabs would heal, and the throbbing ache of having been thrown into a brick wall would be gone. By tomorrow I’d be good as new: one of the few perks to being a hunter.”
Oh yeah this is going to get good. We got a hunter who is going to go out and hunt down evil.
Then we shift into how Chase got to be where he is. Let me tell you it is a sad, sad story. I have to say it, I cried during this book. Just letting you know up front there are some tear-jerker moments.
We flashback to Chase having just completed killing a demon and he is getting ready to find out what gift he has been given that will aid him. Now this part is cool because these gifts are elemental. His father has fire and his mother water. So it is up in the air about what he is going to get.
“But there wasn’t even a spark.”
Well you can imagine that it devastated him. But that wasn’t the worst part of it all. Oh no! His father goes and throws Chase’s mother out because no son of his could ever be without a power, therefore he must not be his son.
Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad things were running through my mind that I want to do to his father! Seriously, that is just F*-ing ridiculous.
So Chase and his mother now have to live outside of the Circle. Honestly, that was the best thing for them, but like most hard choices in life, it takes Chase a while to see that.
Now Chase is living in a crappy apartment with his mother who works herself to the bone. Chase has almost daily attacks by demons who are out to prove they can best Riley Williams son, since he is a legend among the hunters & demons.
One day Chase runs into someone he didn’t expect. A half-blood who actually helped him kill a demon. Man, is he ever confused. The boy can’t help but be attracted to her but with her being half-demon he is also repulsed too.
Meet Rayna :
“Raven hair spilled over her pale shoulders with hints of red highlighting the occasional strand. A tight leather top revealed a sliver of toned stomach and a tease of cleavage. Black pants hugged her hips and long slender legs and met knee-high boots. Her skin glistened in the light, but the most noticeable of her features were her eyes.
Bright green orbs sparkled with an odd glow: demon’s eyes. They had the slit pupils of a cat that I’d never seen on anything other than a house pet or a shifter in animal form.”
But the interesting part is that Chase’s father’s old “dead” partner (yes I know that is a mouthful) happens to be Rayna’s keeper. I know interesting twist right. Marcus Starkraven offers to help Chase out. However, Chase is in overload so he decides to sit on this information till he has a chance to digest it.
Once at home he finds out that his mother has known about Marcus all along and encourages him to take Marcus up on his offer.
“We’re giving you an opportunity to belong to something and not fight alone for what you believe in. Believe me when I say that feels pretty good.”
We all see where this is going, right? Chase goes over to Marcus’ place and he gets to workout and train etc. But while that is taking place Chase and Rayna are trying to track down what the Circle’s big secret is. Something is going down and they want to know what. Rayna gets to take him into territory where demons aren’t that different from hunters or humans. The question remains : Can he change the way he was raised to think in order to fight for what is right?
You will just have to read it to find out. *wink* *wink*
Oh yes, Chase does have to face a challenge or two throughout this book. I don’t want to give it all away. All I can say is that it is really cool and Chase may or may not find out he has a talent after all. Just Saying.
The ending of this book was bittersweet but I think it was a perfect start to a great series. I can honestly say that I am looking forward to reading the next book Shift. So…
If you are looking for a book that:
*is about a boy becoming a man *complete with challenges to fulfill deals *danger from all sides *protecting the innocent & *finding out where one belongs “You and me, always.”
Than you need to read this book because it is definitely for you.
What I loved about this book :
*I loved the challenges that Chase faces in order to find what he is looking for.
*I loved Chase’s mother and thought she was important role model.
*I loved that M.R. Merrick used elemental powers. I honestly haven’t read very many books with this kind of setting. I think the only other one that comes to mind is Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series.
*I thought that the flashbacks were a great way to slowly introduce history that we, the reader, needed to know. I loved that we weren’t hit over the head with fact upon fact. There was always just enough for us to get the idea but never letting on to too much.
*Rayna’s character was hard not to fall in love with. She has that sassy-sweet-do-what-I-say-or-die vibe. I loved it! It is always refreshing to have a heroine who can keep up with the hero and not rely on him to get everything done.
*Riley Williams played the perfect douchebag-of-the-year or life father! Honestly, from the moment he entered the story I just wanted to hate him and did well still do.
*Last, but not least, that ending was pure gold. I can’t believe that M.R. Merrick went there with the first book but Damn, it was tragically awesome.
The reason it did not get 5 Stars:
Obviously it is only .5 away from a 5 star rating so I don’t have much to say in this area. I really only found one thing that didn’t sit well with the rest.
*There were a few spots scattered here and there where the flow seemed to become disrupted. It seemed like Mr. Merrick knew what needed to be said but just seemed to miss it just a little. I can’t explain it very well, other than the flow of the words and emotions seemed to break off for half a page or so and then it jumped right back on track.
“…people fear what they don’t understand.”
“But he’s so cute when he gets all determined and commanding, isn’t he? … It’s not cute, it’s very manly!”
“Take care in your actions, hunter. There will be many who wish you harm. You stand in the way of many wills and they will all try to overcome you. You must remember: you cannot fight fire with fire,”
Before I end I want to thank M.R. Merrick for gifting me a copy of this wonderful book for an honest review....more

Recommendation : If you are a fan of the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews give this book a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. If you are unfamiliar with that series it’s okay. If you like some serious ass kicking and watching the underdog rise to the top than it’s for you. Don’t forget sexy Shifters are abundant in this book as well!
This cover screams of a women on a mission who will kick your ass if you get in her way. Well I have to say that the story did not disappoint. Kit Colbana reminded me Kate Daniels which is huge for me since the Kate Daniels series is one of my favorites. I can only hope that this means good things are in store for the next book as well.
Let’s get down to business
“My sword arm is mighty. I will not fail. My aim is true. My heart is strong. I’m the descendant of some legendary badasses…”
This is Kit’s motto and code of arms. She was raised with the understanding that she was a nobody, nothing to her family. She is a half-blood and her Maternal Grandmother, who took care of her, made sure that she understood what a disgrace to the family she was. Talk about a Cinderella story except this girl fought tooth and nail to become who she is and to be free. She did not need Prince Charming to rescue her, just determination and pure strength of human will.
Throughout the book we get to see glimpses of her childhood and it is not pretty. She was beaten on a regular basis by her Grandmother and locked up constantly. She was degraded and made to wear rags, literally. She decided to try to enter the school her mother and all Aneira’s (assassins) train from a young age. No one thought she could do it and survive, but she did. Yeah, maybe she ran away when she was 15 but who wouldn’t want to get the hell out of dodge with that crap.
Many years later she is running her own business where she tracks missing people down. The office scene had the same feel as the office scene from the first book in the Anita Blake series. But Kit wins my vote for badass any day compared to Anita, sorry it’s the truth.
Kit is in her office and SURPRISE we have a sexy man standing by the door. She can tell that he is a shifter. Her aneria blood seems to help with reading people as well as being able to assess situations that might arise. What can I say,
“We were good assassins because we could understand our marks, learn them, know them and figure out the best way to kill them.”
That shit is cool.
Mystery man decides to play with her a little.
“…his teeth flashing white against the darkness of his skin. I started thinking about the Chesire cat. Bingo. Not a wolf. A cat. Even as I thought it, I could almost see that lazy energy around him flex its claws and stretch, giving me a feline smile.”
Apparently the cat shifters “were insane and dangerous.” The mystery man has come on behalf of the Cat Pack to ask for her help with tracking down a teen shifter. The problem is that Kit couldn’t turn down this shifter because he just happens to be the Queen B’s right hand man. Oh yeah her day went from crap to shitty. In the words of Kit…
“… if I accepted a job from the cat pack, it was pretty much CYA: cover your ass.”
Accepting the job was her only option which means Kit now has a babysitter to help with this project she has to take on and thy name is Damon. The man is
“practically a visual orgasm.”
Mystery Man also has the goods to back up his Badassness. So I have to say…
Welcome Damon to Badass Hall of Fame!
Alright now that I have your attention, don’t forget to wipe the drool off your computer screen and come back to me. Okay. So now you have met our kick-ass heroine and hero. We see that this story is going to take us on a ride trying to track down a run away teen. I know it just gets better and better.
Oh did I mention that she is also being stalked by a very old vampire. Jude Whittier is someone from her past she would gladly leave behind but the man is persistent. He not only shows up in her dreams but makes several house calls. This winds up with some serious testosterone flinging between Alpha Cat and Alpha Vamp. Good Times all around!
Kit and Damon get to make a few personal visits to the Queen B, yikes, and stop by the missing teen’s usual haunts in hopes of finding some clues. But as you can guess what they do find does not look pretty. When Kit catches a break in the case she manages to go from the hunter to the hunted. I am telling you this book kept twisting and turning.
There is plenty of humor to be found and friendships made. I loved how J.C. Daniels portrays the witch clans as well. The one they visit shares a house, a magical expanding house, and all seem to come together to support those in need.
Shifters, Vampires, and Witches abound with plenty of ass kicking for all. There is a bar scene and enough sexual tension between Kit and Damon to set the room on fire. You don’t want to miss this new series by J.C. Daniels aka Shiloh Walker.
Remember that not everything is as it seems.

I did like this book but I just didn't connect with it like the last book. I know I read it fast but that was mainly due to 1. waiting / hoping Devlin would make an appearance 2. trying to find some closure or a good spot to stop without having nightmares.
It does seem funny but I am a wimp when it comes to horror and murder mysteries.
This book is all about Amelia and learning her history. See gets commissioned to restore Asher Cemetery but was really hired to restore more than that. Amelia is also left to solve a murder that is closer to home than she can ever image. My one big star reducer goes by the name Thane. This man replaced Devlin in this book. I figure he is going to be important in books down the road but I just didn't connect with him. I spent most of his scenes wondering if Devlin would show up. There were hints at a connection between the two men, Emerson College. But Devlin never showed and the story completed itself, for the met part. I would suggest reading this book to understand Amelia's background but be warned there is no Devlin.

Recommendation : Those who are looking for a great Paranormal Romance book to read this summer. It has plenty of action, plot twists and just enough steam.
When I read the synopsis it sounded like the perfect summer beach read. Light fluffy, happy ending sort of read. Man was I off the mark, but in a good way.
This book was intense. It grabs you and sends your emotions through a grinder while trying to keep up on the adventure. This book was not light or fluffy. It had pull, substance and I did not see the road signs ahead.
This book is a definite read this summer. Werewolves, Vampires and Witches Oh My! It has everything a paranormal romance reader could ask for.
I have not read any of her other books but never once felt lost. I was able to keep up with who was who. It also made me want to read more about certain characters. Yup, this book has made me a Michele Hauf fan.
We get a sneak peek at Ridge in the very beginning. This scene is what mislead me. It was light and fluffy. He is working the land, clearing trees with a chain saw and horses. He wants to keep his business nature friendly if you will.
We find out he is the new pack leader in town and must now take a wife and produce cuddly little weres to help expand the pack, which is dwindling. I mean to say there are 4 members total. So for him and his pack it’s a big deal. But he can’t have kids due to an incident 13 years ago.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas has applied till now. His wife, his little witch cast a infertility spell and so he must get that removed and divorce her.
Well I thought I saw the signs ahead. Go find witch. Argue, take her back, and fall in love. Then everything turns out peachy. I was wrong.
The scene shifts to Abby getting ready to pick her son up at the airport. I can work with this, so add a son to my earlier equation. But then she gets the call. Someone has kidnapped her son and is holding him for ransom. She now has to hunt down this vampire in to exchange for her son.
About this time Ridge shows up and harsh words are spoken. However, Abby does eventually share her problem and wrangles Ridge into helping.
The journey begins.
* I loved Ridge. I pictured him as a modern-day knight in shining armour. He was honorable through out and was willing to help all those in need. I was so happy that he was able to get his HEA!
Richard Addison (Ridge)
“Let no man challenge him without due strength and strong morals.”
* Abby was a feisty witch. I enjoyed watching the walls that she had built up around her heart and life crumble. She is one tough cookie but learned that sometimes you have to let other people in, those who love you, help you with problems. You don’t have to do everything alone. In some ways she reminded me of Kate Daniels.
Abigail Addison (Abby)
* Ryan, Abby’s son, was like every other teenage boy I have met. He was growing out of his awkward phase and had an interest in anything that spelled trouble. I can only hope that he gets a story in the future.
* I really enjoyed Severo and will be looking for his story. Vampire married to a Werewolf, yup sounds like a fun ride to me.
* The Blood sport
“…blood sport – a wicked game that pitted blood-starved vampires against one another to the death – …”
This reminded me of UK’s TV show Being Human. If you have seen the show than you remember when the vampires would pit the weres against humans etc.
Not A Fan Of :
* Some things were predictable in the book. However, Michele did go to great lengths to try to confuse you and therefore question whether or not your guess was right.
* I thought the whole lumberjack thing was a little chessy. I know it is probably just me, but really I just wanted to laugh, okay I did laugh. Not good.
* The opening scene could have been deleted. I could have been happy starting the book with Abby getting ready to pick up Ryan. I think that why Ridge was there and who he was to her were explained well without the odd winter scene at the beginning. As I said before I just laughed through it.
“Thank God for that. I mean, that it was your worst memory. I’d hate it to be me that was your worst.” Because memories never went away, and their haunting ability could fell a grown man to his knees.
“Men really were touchy about damage to their manhood.”
“What’s important is not what we did then, but what we do now, and the intention with which we do it.”

I have heard greaThis might be your cup of tea but it was not mine. This is painful to say because I was really looking forward to reading this book. I have heard great things about the author and the first two books of this series are on my to read list.
Recommend: This book reminded me of Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley and The Orchid Affair by Lauren Willig with the writing style. If you enjoyed these books then you might like this one. It starts in the present and flashes to the past, I mean like hundreds of years difference.
I want to start out and say that I love the cover of this book. I think it is cute and sassy. I thought that Jolie Wilkins was that kind of girl and maybe for some of you she is. However, her character left me confused and saddened.
Shouldering onward Love the beginning. I was so excited when we met Rand. Talk about hot man. Tall dark and handsome.
Rand,Mr.British Hottie, walks into Jolie and Christa's to have a reading. Jolie can see a person's aura and Rand has a blazing blue one. He asks for a reading and she takes out the cards but he wants specific's about his future. She says that all she can do is see auras. She then proceeds to inform him on his aura. I could feel the pull between Rand and Jolie. It was great. I kept thinking, "Yes, we get to watch them fall in love over time." But instead I got information overload. Years and important events were summed up. I felt confused and discombobulated. By the time we got back to the story between Rand and Jolie we get shifted back to the past through Jolie's journal entries. I kept up reading though hoping that we would see an end to the past and come back to the present. We did hit the present and then back to the past with journal entries. This pattern kept repeating. The whole time Jolie is trying to keep a secret from Rand about her past and consequently his. Throw in a love triangle with Sinjin a vampire and we have our opposing forces.
Will Jolie trust Rand with her secret? Who will she pick Rand or Sinjin? What is going to happen with her being the Queen of the Underworld? (I forgot to mention that she becomes this during the information overload.)
Besides going back and forth with present and past I think the ending really confused me the most. We wind up at the beginning of the book. We were still asking ourselves the same questions.
Overall I give it a 2 out of 5. It was okay but I am not going to write home about it. For me it was just a writing style issue. I have a hard time with all books written this way so it is not necessarily the author. I am still looking forward to the first two books since they are not written this way.

Calling all Hex Hall and Firelight Fans! There is a new "Juliet" in town! Jax has run away from her witch coven that is known for there use of dark powers. She ends up in the mountains of North Carolina. Here she meets her "Romeo," the compelling Keller Dawes who happens to come from a family of Hunters. This is the next up&coming Star-crossed Lovers Trilogy!
Recommend: If you love the whole "Romeo & Juliet" story placed in the present time with paranormal thrown in the mix then check this book out. As stated earlier, if you like Hex Hall and Firelight then this book is a great addition to your to-be-read list.
Jaxina Pherson or "Jax" is running for her life. She comes from a long line of witches who use their powers to kill. Jax does not want to be part of this family legacy and breaks free. She is drawn to a small community amongst the mountains of North Carolina. She has some money, a car and an RV to her name and must locate a subsitute for her mother to enroll her in high school. You heard right, Jax wants a normal teenage life and will hold on to it with both hands.
Upon arrival to this small town she is almost run over by a truck while walking by the woods near her RV campground. She is able to avoid the Truck due to her super speed but ends up in bigger trouble. The driver is not only a teenage boy but a hunter due to the bloodstone he pulls out of his pocket.
Jax did not let that little incident deture her from her dream of a normal life. She finds a woman to use mind control with and impersonate her mother to enroll her. Keller Dawes her mystery car man and hunky hunter ends up in the school office and sparks start to fly. She seems to be drawn to him against her better judgment.
Now that she has found someone who makes her temperature rise is all the right ways can she really stay with the danger he brings? Will she stay and fight for a normal life and possibly love or will she flee for safety?
Can we change what Fate has handed us?
* Keller Dawes tall, dark hair and handsome.
"I wanted to kiss you the moment I saw you." "Me, Too," I whisper, only sharing part of what I feel.
*Jax Pherson drop-dead gorgeous blonde.
"Who would have thought when I fled my family's compound in Miami that my biggest obstacles would be disguising myself and getting enrolled in school? Fleeing a coven of deadly witches, buying a used car and purchasing an RV? Mo problem. Going brunette and getting your average high school education? Monumental tasks."
"Fate needs a good, solid bitch slap."
"And would you happen to have classes in living without magic and how to relate to boys who aren't witches?"
"Toni, being a Buffy fan, would appreciate the irony if she knew the situation. All that tortured, star-crossed longing between natural-born enemies."
Overall this is an excellent book for young adults and adults alike.

I enjoyed the change of pace with werewolves vs. wizards instead of vampires. It is always nice to change it up. I thought this story flowed nicely. I enjoy that Dylan, a submissive, was able to overcome those tendencies to help a friend escape. I loved that Abby was a strong Alpha Female who still needed a strong Alpha male to take care of her. So we get to watch her kick-butt with Keith beside her. Keith can join the ranks of Hot-R-Us Alpha Males. I rank him up there with the BDB and Midnight Breed Boys. Who wouldn't fall in love with Gavin and Sammie! This Alpha pair are perfect!

Okay, I know I have said 'this book is the best so far' starting at book 2 or 3 but I have to say it again. This book is my favorite so far! We all know and love Chessiebomb and Terrible. I mean they are my favorite couple along with Zsadist and Bella from BDB and a few more. My point it that these books are pure awesome, right? Right. Now add...Zombies to this awesomeness and you get Chasing Magic. Yes, I said Zombies! I know I never expected it to happen in this series but Stacia Kane went there and I loved it!
Recommend : Anyone who has read the Downside Ghosts series will adore this book. If you haven't given this series a try well do it. You have nothing to loose and everything to gain by looking at life from the other side of town.
Let's take a walk down Chasing Magic lane :
1. Debunking Gone Awry
Chess decides to go into the home of the family she is debunking for and handing over their sentence. They were found to be faking and therefore will be sent to jail. Now she was told that the Black Squad would be there for back up when she handed this over, but she was pulled in before they arrived. Trying put off the inevitable for her own safety an awkward silence decends. They ask her to take a seat. This is where it all went downhill. Her phone beeps with a text saying that the calvary has arrived and so she delievers the verdict. Guilty with a nice sentence of prison for the parents and foster care for the children. However, they had bought protection from a Witch. Yes, Chess was being forced under his dark spell thanks to that stupid chair.
We all know that Chess is one bad mofo so she forces herself to chant the Banishing words to break the spell. It was working until the witch hit her in the face. Oh no, it was on like Donkey Kong after that. Chess uses moves that Terrible taught her and packing them with her power. He didn't know what hit him and Chess would have been done is Mrs. Darnell, one of the guilty parents, didn't bring a gun to the fight. That lovely distraction gave the witch time to move in and the battle between them ramped up a notch. Where the hell was the Black Squad? Who knows, but Chess had to defuse the situation if she wanted to make it out alive. Dodging bullets she managed to wrestle away the gun which gave her the edge she needed to finish this fight and go home.
"The front door flew open-the Black Squad, their own guns drawn, their all-black uniforms and helmets like moving ink spots against the pale walls. "You're late."
2. Hit Man Hired
Lex being the ever caring individual that he is, and really I think he does love Chess in his own way, offers Terrible a job as His Enforcer. This would kill two birds with one stone. Terrible would no longer work for Bump and so they would not have to go after each other with Chess in the middle. Also Lex would have an Enforcer which at this time he was looking at getting one due to the fact that he took over his fathers business.
Terrible has strong ties to Bump due to the fact that Bump took Terrible off the streets and raised him. There is no way that Terrible would work for Lex even if it would make things easier for all. Chess already knows this and tries to keep the pissing contest from escalating to beatings. Lex says his piece and Terrible declines but Lex leaves with this warning:
"Oughta give one more thing the mentions here. You ain't wanna come on with me ... means I get on finding one who will, dig, get me a steelman of my owns. Ain't sure Downside got size enough for two, aye? Rather not be fighting you causen of Tulip, but ... got plans, I do, an I ain't losing em."
The most dangerous part about the whole situation is that Lex knows Terrible's weakness thanks from past information. Now Lex hires the gun and hands over the amunition to take down the man that Chessie loves.
3. Drug Rampage
It would not be a Downside Ghost book if we didn't have any added drama of an attack on both Drug Lords. This time our drama comes by the name of Speed. The major problem they are having with this drug is that it causes the user to go crazy, literally they are losing their minds.
"Mine friend, him taken the speed. Bangin it. Him gone all fluffcutty, ain't won't leave him room, screamin them after he, screamin on ghosts in him head."
"Him done gone out on the morn, come back with blood on he. All wet blood. Fucked in crazy, him bein. Talkin to he, ain't like he, ain't in he eyes. The him come back, start screamin. Then go all silent on the again."
People are dying from taking this Speed and doing all sorts of things that just aren't normal, even for those on drugs. Highly addictive, this drug is being brought in from someone else. Bump is blaming Lex, but Lex's side is being hit as well. So Chess is on the search for finding out why and where the Speed is coming from while Terrible is helping hunt down the dealers.
4. Zombie Control
Welcome to Stacia Kane's Zombies. They are not the decomposing kind but living, breathing people. She has woven the idea of Zombies with living souls that are under magic control. I found that these zombies were quite unique from the typical view.
"His soul-if the soul is under that much control, I mean, if it's been so strongly ordered to carry out a particular task, it'll force the body to keep going. Like, you know how under hypnosis, people can be injured without feeling it?" "Aye." "That's kind of like what this is. His soul isn't his own, its powered by someone else, which means his body is powered by someone else. So it doesn't matter what happens to his body. As long as it can move, it will."
These types of Zombies pop-up all over the book. This one just happens to be the first sighting and also the reason that Chess knows there is more to this Drug problem than meets the eye. It was not only the speed in his system but a spell bag in his pocket that bound him. Now the race is on to finding the puppeteer and getting rid of him before he gets rid of them.
5. Which Witch Is Which?
A Witch is running rampant making zombies to do his dirty work. Thanks to the above highlight we know that this is a problem. Chess is on the hunt for the witch and keeps running into dead ends right and left.
"So whoever made that spell got heself a killer ain't can be killed, aye? Got heself a weapon can be used anyplace." She nodded. Bump raised his eyebrows, tilted his head. "Damn, then, Ladybird. Lookin like you got some fuckin tough work coming, catchin em all."
When does Chessie not have her hands full with working side jobs for Bump?
6. The Great Reveal and Elder Griffin's Bonding
Elder Griffin asks Chessie to bring Terrible with her to his bonding. Chess agrees because out of everyone she really does want his approval since he is a father figure to her. Terrible argues with her several times about how she doesn't have to bring him and how it will look with him there. But Chess doesn't care.
"Terrible. You are coming. And if anybody doesn't like it they can fuck off. That includes you." His lips twitched, "You givin me the orders now, aye?" "Yes. So cut it out."
Chess did manage to get Terrible to come with her. The bonding scene was really sweet and I can only hope that Chess and Terrible will actually become bonded at some point. Well after Elder Griffin and Keith were bonded she waited to introduce them to Terrible. Chess was relieved that Elder Griffin and Keith didn't seem to judge Terrible when they met him but as Elder Griffin shook Terrible's hand...
"His eyes cut to Chess, so fast she wasn't entirely sure she'd seen it. What was that? It looked like a double-take; it looked like some kind of surprise or even disappointment. Shock, really. That was it, shock."
We later find out that Elder Griffin felt Chessie's magic in Terrible which lead to her telling him the story about how she saved Terrible's life. Since she bound him with a sigil and killed a psychopomp you can imagine how Elder Griffin took this.
"He'd seen her; he saw her clearly enough now."
"Elder Griffin wasn't realizing that beneath the surface she was perfect. He was realizing she was worthless. And he'd never be able to see anything else, at least so she figured. How could he ever forgive her?"
7. Tender Moments
I think this is my favorite part of this book. I thought that Terrible and Chessie had the best moments in this book. I mean really I probably cried more during reading this book than any of the others. You are warned that you might shed some tears. I would like to share a few of these tender moments with you.
"He came around to her side and opened her door for her, eyeing her up and down as she got out of the car. His hand squeezed hers; a slight twist of his arm turned her to face him, standing not quite a foot away with his face in shadow. "Shit. You so fuckin pretty, Chessie. True thing. So ... ain't even can breathe sometimes."
I don't want too give too much away, but I had to put this scene in. Love it! I hope you enjoy too.
"I ain't ... Don't know how to say it up right. Never-Fuck, Chess. Thought you was dead once before, you recall? Never felt so bad in my life, not ever. Then on the other day, thought you was gone and just ... I ain't can do it, bein without you." He rubbed his neck, pressed his palm into his furrowed brow and took a swipe at his eyes. Cleared his throat, twice. "Don't want to. An even if I did, ain't can leave you down there on your alones. How I can do that one, aye? Leave my Chessiebomb there without me. 'Specially knowin you scared on it"
"I don't want to be here without you, either. I can't-I don't want to be anywhere if you're not there." "Naw, naw, Chessie, ain't wanting you- Only had the thought you come down see me, ain't meant-" "No. No, I don't want that. Being here without you-I'd rather be in the City. With you. I don't want to be without you. I don't care where, I can't do it, I don't-" His hands on the side of her face lifted her to her tiptoes, lifted her almost off her feet. Maybe he actually did; she didn't know, because she was floating, flying, his mouth on hers sending her off the roof and into that blank lonely sky above. The sky that suddenly didn't look so lonely, the sky that was maybe ... peaceful. "Love you, Chessie," he murmured. "Ain't never ... Fuckin love you, more'n anything."
8. New Kid on the Block
Chessie gets a break in the Speed/Zombie outbreak. Terrible was able to get a dealer to interrogate about where the drugs are coming from. Chess had a hard time at the beginning with watching Terrible work until she paused and thought about what was truly happening.
"...she thought of living people trapped inside bodies compelled by another person, their souls crying out but unable to escape, their freedom stolen. Flesh was a hell of a prison."
Terrible did manage to break the dealer who happened to be from the gang Southpaws in Baltimore. Oh yes, there is a new kid in town who wants to take all of Downside. It is actually quite brilliant get both sides to fight each other and swoop in when the most damage has been done. I know the news just keeps getting better and better. But Chessie thinks that this type of planning is too elaborate for a regular gang someone has to be pulling their strings.
9. Sinking of the Titanic
We get to take a walk down by the seaside during this book. Chess is able to make a link from person to person till she ran into a ship. This ship is suppose to be the future of trade and comes attached to a man who has a daughter that is/was caught up in all the drug deals. Not picking up an ounce of magic from the owner or his household Chess takes Terrible down to the ship to check it out. Wouldn't you know during this little trip they meet Mr. Witch. Barely managing to make their escape they decide to make a plan to take down the witch and his zombies. Lex and Terrible have to work together yet again but the tension is high with a truce only being called till the witch dies.
Things go from bad to worse before the Agneta Katina or as I like to call it the Titanic ends up sinking to the bottom with no hope of resurrection. Trust me this last stand is intensely awesome. The whole zombie army idea was the best I have seen in this series. Loved it.
10. Knock Out Drag Out Fight
After being beaten up and drowned Chessie drags herself over to the Fight. Oh yes, the ending to this book was well worth it. Hit Man and Terrible are in it to win it. No holding back; it is kill or be killed and this fight scene will pluck your heart strings till you cry.
"He wasn't moving, holy fuck he wasn't-She couldn't breathe. It felt as if someone had taken a sledgehammer and slammed it into her chest. Yes, he had the sigil on him, and it would hold his soul, but what if his body was too damaged to recover, what if his brain was damaged, would he want to live if he couldn't walk, if he- Shit. A bird. A bird screeched over head, and she couldn't help but look up at it, couldn't help but see it. A bird. A psychopomp, here to collect a soul. Oh fuck..."
I hope you enjoyed taking this walk with me. There are still many things in this book that I have not brought up and that I think you will love along as well. This book truly out shines the last 4 books. I am excited to see where Stacia Kane goes from here.
To end my review I would like to sum this book up with one word, Change. I think for Chessie this book is all about her changing her life; seeing what needs changed and finding the will to do it.
I want to thank Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book to review....more

Recommendation : If you enjoyed Zsadist's story from BDB then give this one a try. It has the same sort of feel to it. If you liked the first two books of the Eternal Guardians series then you will like this as well.
"Demetrius who we are is not a result of where we come from. It's the combination of what we do and how we live that determines who we are."
We dive head first into Isadora's wedding day. That's right I believe this was man number 3 that she has to marry since the other 2 found their soul mates. But Isadora goes missing. Everyone thinks that she ran away again but this is not true. She was kidnapped by her lady's maid and brought to Atlanta, who reminds me of Malevolent from Sleeping Beauty, so she can cast a spell on her. While the Argonauts are trying to figure out how she left she is being prepared for this spell.
Now I know you are all wondering what this spell is that Atlanta is casting. Don't worry I will tell you. She is casting a fertility spell on Isadora. This is all so that Atlanta can create the her own chosen one. Before the Argonauts can get to her in time the spell is cast and Atlanta sends both Isadora and Demetrius to their own private island. This island ends up being where all the mythical creatures have been sent too. In order to survive they have to work together. Will they manage to get along or will they kill each other? If they do get along can Demetrius manage to keep from fulfilling Atlanta's wish?
* Loved how we get to see the real Isadora. She was quiet and shy in the first book. You see her grow a little in the second book, but this one you get to see her shine.
* Demetrius reminded me of Zsadist from the BDB series. Dark past, scars from abuse, and the whole don't fuck with me attitude to tie it all together. We do however learn that Demetrius is more than just an Argonaut. He has some deep dark secrets that must be overcome for him to give himself completely to Isadora.
* I think Orpheus became my new favorite character. His love and concern for not only Isadora but his brother was nice to see. Plus he is quite funny throughout all the books so far.
* I thought that Isadora and Demetrius's story felt a little rushed and topsy turvy. Since this one felt like Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward I could not give it more than 4 stars esp. since Lover Awakened is my favorite of the BDB series.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and would recommend reading it. I thought there was plenty of surprises to keep me guessing mixed with hot & steamy scenes.
Okay so this book was not as good as the first, at least for me it was not. I kept having flashes of the movie Wrong Turn running through my head. Basically the helicopter crashes and they wander in the woods trying to avoid the bad guys. But at least we get to see Chloe in the next book. I mean I am pretty sure that is who Rafe referred to at the end about other kids and a failed experiment.

Shifter's and magic users and I am sure Vampires just might make an appearance farther in the series. I loved Jackson. Who doesn't love a private investigator that can take on most people because he is a bad*ss with magic abilities. Let's not forget his partner in crime, Alec. If he has a story I am sure it will be a hot one.
I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. If you are looking for a great, easy read in the Paranormal Romance area give this one a try. ...more

If you like BDB, Midnight breed series, or LotU than try this one. I will warn you that Darcy and Axel have sex almost every time she uses her witchcraft. But the story is interesting and moves at a good pace.
