I made it to page 228 and skimmed the rest. It just seemed to lose steam. The idea was neat but going back and forth between 6+ POV's was just getting painful. I honestly did not care about Dareth and Shalar. Turisan seemed a little flat. Eliani seemed to resort to acting like a little girl than a woman who was in charge of her homelands guard and future ruler.

It all started with Poison Study. My love for Ms. Snyders books stemmed from that book alone. I fell in love with Yelena and Valek and while I have loved other books, because I have many, many loved books/characters, I do have a special spot for Poison Study.
Why go through all the trouble of mentioning Poison Study on my Scent of Magic review? Simple, when I say that I do enjoy Avry and Kerrick but I have my doubts you know that is it because of my love for the Study series. Unfortunately, for the Healer series I will always be comparing it to the Study series. So, I have to say that while I enjoy Avry and Kerrick’s interactions, I find I miss Yelena and Valek. I miss the independent-no-nonsense assassin’s assistant and her myserious assassin man. I miss a man that knows who and what he is, not a man who only wishes he were free from responsibility, but I am getting ahead of myself.
Scent of Magic…
When I first picked up this book I had a hard time getting into it. My main issue was that Avry and Kerrick were splitting up and going separate ways. This reminded me of the second book to the Study series and I wasn’t happy about it then or now. I wanted a bit of a different twist. I have to report that yes, this book had twists and turns that threw me.
If you read Touch of Power than you know that Avry actually does die but thanks to Kerrick and the Death Lily she was brought back to life. Avry and Kerrick really don’t understand how or why this happened but who were they to look a gift horse in the mouth?! I sure as hell wouldn’t question it if my loved one came back from the dead, as long as they weren’t a zombie. *shudder* No, Avry is not a zombie.
After their heartfelt reunion they both decide to split up. Avry feels that she needs to give her sister a second chance at freedom from the wicked witch, Jael. Kerrick is not a fan. That is an understatement but Avry won’t let him persuade her otherwise. She is determined to make amends with her last surviving relative and so into the belly of one of the beasts she goes.
Kerrick, on the other hand, decides that he needs to rendezvous with the rest of his company, friends. They are at Prince Ryne’s castle. Oddly enough his journey there goes almost, and I stress almost, without a hitch.
He finds himself surrounded by dead ufas, with there sharp claws and razor-sharp teeth. Who other than Cellina, Tohon’s go-to woman, is leading this pack. She is to…
“report every detail of [Kerrick's] death and dismemberment to him. [Cellina has] also been ordered to bring home a souvenir.”
You can imagine that didn’t sit well with Kerrick but what could the man do but wait for the signal.
Meanwhile, Avry has hit a snag on her end. Her plan of going in and talking to her sister was changed the minute she entered Mom’s place. She was practically surrounded by Estrid’s army. They claimed to be missionaries, spreading the creator’s message of peace and recruiting people for the army. They won’t come out and say it, but that was what they were there to do, with or without the recruitee’s consent.
Avry weighed her plan as Mom helped her change her appearance. Should she continue with her original plan and get in and out of Estrid’s camp with her sister or should she join their ranks and help where should could before continuing on with her task? Her mind was made up the minute she realized how bad the army’s recruiters were at moving in the woods. They would need all the help they could get to go up against Tohon. With her mind made she quickly devised a plan and put it into action.
“Fact is, I’m interested. You know I’m skilled. Four of your guys couldn’t catch me. I can fight for Estrid, but I don’t want to be a draftee, devotee or anything else ending in ee.”
She was going to show them what knowledge she could offer if they chose to allow her in their ranks.
Would they allow Avry to bump up the latter without putting in the time? If they did would she be able to avoid Estrid and her daughter-in-law, Jael? Let’s not forget that Avry and Jael have some bad blood between them from book one.
Will Kerrick manage to talk his way out of death by zombie ufas or will he have to fight his way to freedom? Will he be able to make it to Prince Ryne to add aid for the fight ahead?
Once the plot starts to thicken you will have a hard time putting it down. The dead will rise and more lives will be lost before the book ends. While I did enjoy this book, I have to say that I still wanted more from Ms. Snyder. I didn’t want to spend part of the book comparing one series with another. I hope that all of this plot building and twists and turns will pay off in the next book.
I would also like to thank Harlequin via NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series....more

I think that sums up my thoughts on this book quite well. Shadow and Bone brought to life not only a whole new world, but magic. I am not talking about Harry Potter magic, but different types of elemental magic, fire, air, water, shadow, and even healing magic.
From the moment I opened the book and read the first page I was intrigued.
The servants called them malenchiki, little ghosts, because they were the smallest and the youngest, and because they haunted the Duke's house like giggling phantoms, darting in and out of rooms, hiding in cupboards to eavesdrop, sneaking into the kitchen to steal the last of the summer peaches.
The boy and the girl had arrived within weeks of each other, two more orphans of the border wars, dirty-faced refugees plucked from the rubble of distant towns and brought to the Duke's estate to learn to read and write, and to learn a trade. The boy was short and stocky, shy but always smiling. The girl was different, and she knew it.
Alina Starkov never realized just how different she was until one day, one single event changed everything.
I huddled over Mal, shielding his body with mine. I knew it was futile, but it was all I could offer. I smelled the fetid stench of the volcra, felt the air gusting from their wings. I pressed my forehead to Mal's and heard him whisper, "I'll meet you in the meadow."
Something inside me gave way, in fury, in hopelessness, in the certainty of my own death. I felt Mal's blood beneath my palms, saw the pain in his beloved face. A volcra screeched in triumph as its talons sank into my shoulder. Pain shot through my body.
And the world went white.
Alina's life changed from that day on. She was no longer the sickly looking mousy orphan. No, she was more. She was a prize that many wanted to get there hands on.
Magic is what whispered and ran through her veins. Alina was special even for those who were blessed or some would say cursed to be able to use.
For Alina it was curse for a time until she let her shields down. Once she didn't try to bury her magic she realized how she could use it for the good of her people. She would train to correct the wrongs that were put upon the kingdom and save them all from having to spend one more day at war.
But not all was as it seemed. Alina just might be a pawn in a dangerous game. What to do about it? Who would believe her if she told them? Who should she even trust with this information? How could she save the people she loved if she was going to be used to destroy rather than redeem?
You must read the book to find out more! No spoilers here, well not many. lol Thank you Ms. Bardugo for sharing your story with the world. I loved every minute of it and can't wait to see what is in store for Alina's future.

This was so close to a 5 star rating but the beginning was kinda hard to get into And then it would shift really fast from one thing to another. That however is my only complaint which means there was an amazing storyline with tons of fight scenes. The best part for me was although I would put this mainly in Fantasy there was enough relationship building in it to make me happy!
I am left with two questions.
1. When can I get my hands on the second book?
2. Why have I not heard of this book till a few weeks ago? Really it is well worth buying and reading. ...more

I was hooked from the beginning. I had a hard time putting this book down and if it wasn't for sick children(we love our children) I would have finished it in a day.
I Loved It!
Recommend : Anyone who loves Fantasy mixed with an ex-pirate and a kick-butt main female character! It really is a must read!
Warning: You may cry, so keep tissues close. This book will take your emotions for a ride.
Alright, on with the parts that I couldn't get enough of:
* I have to say it. Galadin reminds me of Orlando Bloom. A Half Elf and an ex-pirate. It was actually really wonderful to have an excuse to daydream about him. You know you wanna do it. Let's take a look....
Add that to
This equals one Sexy Galadin!
* I loved Caliphany. I thought she was the perfect female character. She decided to take her life back. I loved that she went and trained with (view spoiler)[Galadin (hide spoiler)]. I am all about a sexy(view spoiler)[ ex-pirate and ranger (hide spoiler)] training a girl who is learning she can take control of her destiny!
* One of my favorite parts was when Caliphany and (view spoiler)[Galadin (hide spoiler)] are out in the woods and they go tumbling. The scene was perfect.I think this for me was when the tides turned. I mean I thought there was something going on, but this scene seemed touching and sweet.
* I got the funniest looks from my hubby when I read about (view spoiler)[Juliana and Malchior (hide spoiler)] dating. Really I just pictured her sweet friend hooked up with the other professor who she (view spoiler)[singed his hair off and about killed him (hide spoiler)]. Really, it just made me chuckle. Yes, I do laugh when I read and it drives my hubby crazy. What can I say it is like watching a movie for me.
* I did love Jayden Ravenwing as well. I mean the head of the kings guards, way sexy! I thought his part in the whole book was good, but a little sad. He was a better man then most and it was refreshing to read a book with a good guy against a good guy. Really, both men were winners. But one out weighed the other when it came to Cali.
* I loved the overall messages of this book. Love Conquers All and Always Follow Your Heart I don't think you can go wrong with either of these.
* The one wish I had was I wanted a few more cute scenes of Cali and (view spoiler)[ Galadin (hide spoiler)] falling in love at the beginning. I really enjoyed the ones that were there but I could have loved a few more.
* Okay make that two wishes. I thought this was one of the few books that could have gotten away with Sectioning off the book. I am not sure what this is called, sorry. For example: When a book is broken up in 3 parts like: Free Falling, Troubled Switch, and Destiny or True Love. I don't know it might just me. I felt the characters shift and breaking up the book, would not have hurt it. Mysti is a great author and I think she could have pulled it off.
"No, I would never forget him. It would be like trying not to breathe—impossible."
"Together, we held to each other, swaying gently from side to side. We danced the dance of soul mates—a conversation that said nothing and everything all at once."
She poured a potion over my head wound. It burned, and I yelped. “A little?”Lillyanne shrugged. “Sorry. Every time I say, ‘It’ll hurt like hell’s blazes’,the patients take off. It’s a righteous lie, mind ye.”
To sum it up I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it! Thank you to Mysti Parker for sending me a copy to review. It was excellent. Bravo! Quotes: "The judge's massive eyebrows crept up. "Kaldar. Are you the one speaking for the plaintiff today?" "Yes, Your Honor." "Well, shit," Dobe said. "I guess you're familiar with the law. You hit it over the head, set its house on fire, and got its sister pregnant."
