The story went places I didn't expect it to and was very well written. The last Bella Jewel book I read, the first Criminals of the Ocean, I felt the story and characters didn't make sense and their transitions were too abrupt without enough build-up, so I was worried about something similar happening here, but that didn't happen at all. This book was dark, but not super dark. I enjoy both, really all I'm looking for is a unique storyline and good characters, which this book more than delivers. And I'm glad I gave it a shot, because it renewed my faith in Jewel's writing and reminded me why I've been so drawn in by her stories in the past. I'll continue buying her books in the future.(less)

I stumbled onto this book I don't even know how, through a random link b/c it was free, so I wasn't really expecting anything, then by the first few chapters I was sucked in and like damn, how did I snag this awesome book for free, what is going on here?
I have been a sucker for women-escaping-domestic-abuse stories ever since I watched Sleeping With the Enemy when I was a teenager. Watching that sense of freedom and rediscovery is so beautiful. And the blurb doesn't make it clear, but there's romance in this book too, and that was super beautiful too, and an important ingredient. It was just a powerful, well written book. Seriously good stuff people. Now I'm going to go back and buy the first one in the series. The author tackles domestic abuse in a very realistic and empathetic way. I feel like many authors want to use this kind of story line as an 'in' to make their story edgy or 'deep' but Davis really tackles it in a very real way, and I really liked that she respected the reality of these kinds of situations and didn't downplay the after effects of abuse and long-term things you have to deal with. Really well done.(less)

Official Blurby-Blurb: Gripping and action packed. Just when I thought I knew what was coming, another twist would shock me. Superb!
More Heather thoughts: Man, I love books that are wicked smart and plotty like this. Bellin is completely impressive not only with his twisty plot gymnastics, but with the character drama. This is a story about a group of people in a vast barren wilderness trying to survive against all odds. It’s a great horror movie/sci-fi set-up. Once you get drawn in, you just can’t put this book down. Beyond that, it’s all about the internal struggle of Querry to find himself and his internal and external struggles are often layered echoes of one another, which is freaking cool.
The whole time there are questions and mysteries popping up. At the beginning, I thought, oh, I bet I can predict how this will go. Um yeah. No. Wrong. Hello twist-I-wasn’t-expecting. And then fifty pages after, another-twist-I-wasn’t-expecting. And so on. This freaking delighted me! There’s a lot of predictability out there in the world of books. Finding a wicked twisty author who surprises you? Fun, fun, fun! Couldn’t put it down because I had to know what was going on and get to the ending. I read it in a day. Oh and yeah, there’s some deliciously creepy bits :)
This book is just wicked cool from all sides, people. Wicked cool. If you like action or survival stories or twisty smart stories, or hell, just a book that will draw you and not let you put the book down until it’s done, go grab this book when it’s out or pre-order it! Comes out September 23rd. (less)

I've been disappointed w/ every single switch POV book I've ever read except for this one. I was totally sucked into the story even though I'd only read Bully a couple months ago, it felt totally fresh. There was so much going on in Jared's head, it was such an intense place to be, there was so much complexity behind all of his actions, God I loved getting to ride along as a reader. Really excellent read. (less)
