A shape changer, a boy with unknown powers, and a dragon assassin join her and her lap griffin to chase an evil dragon and a villain for a stolen treasure and revenge. Volcano goddess Pele joins them in Hawaii in an exciting adventure. Yep writes so well you soon suspend your disbelief and follow the chase.(less)

The two other children in iron lungs and eventually others in the polio ward listen and add to the story. The story is a medieval fantasy about Jimmy the Giant-Slayer and his adventures. The book goes back and forth between the reality of the polio ward and the possibilities of the fantasy world. I enjoyed the way the tale includes elements of the children and how they see themselves in the characters but the language sometimes seems too sophisticated for an eleven-year old. Polio and many phrases (the author is Canadian) are going to be unfamiliar to young readers.(less)

Slow starting but gets better as it continues. You learn what's going on as the children do so it is very confusing. Mythological animals and a time rift are the center of the mystery. Lots of action. The children develop as siblings and personal gifts are uncovered. Obviously the first of a series. (less)
