Typically I can read a book in a day or so but this took several just because I wasn't excited to read it and wasn't sure I cared what happened next. I've heard great things about the 500 Kingdoms series as a whole, and I'm a sucker for a fairy tale retelling, so I'll continue with the series. The pace did pick up towards the end and I will definitely continue reading the series. It wasn't a horrible book, just okay, which was disappointing when I was expecting something similar to the magic of The Fairy Godmother....more

Cinderella isn't the long suffering stepdaughter we've all grown up thinking she is. Instead she's a manipulative brat. In this short story told from the point of view of Anna, the poor ugly stepsister, we get just the tiniest glimpse of the story that could have been. This could easily have become a five star story but as it stands, I'm tempted to take away another star just because the title is stupid....more

I'm kind of loving the fact that regular, every-day kind of folks can put their work out there for the masses to read thanks to e-publishing. But, people, please! Find an editor. Not just your bff or your sister or cousin or whatever; someone who actually knows what they are doing. Believe me, it will be worth the investment.
I am hopeful that the author will continue to grow and improve, as most authors do, as she continues the storyline, [and gets a good editor] because I do think she has a talent for telling a good story.
I've read a lot of fairy tale re-tellings. I've read independently published e-books as well as best selling authors, all trying to tell the same story a slightly different way. You'd think that eventually you would run out of ways to tell fairy tales right? And maybe one day we will, but for now, UnEnchanted is unique enough to capture my attention and my imagination.
The story is good. Parts of it moved too fast without enough explanation and some of the characters don't sound believable, but overall, an enjoyable story. I will likely read future books in the series, particularly since I feel like I'm now vested in the characters and what happens to them. I would like a little more back story on the family and their history early on, rather than information just jumping into the middle of the story, but that is likely just a personal preference.
Overall I would recommend this book to people who enjoy reading new authors and people who enjoy reading re-told fairy tales. And it's not just for the YA crowd either; adults can enjoy as well....more
