It starts off funny and rather interesting. I mean you have Dani the firecracker in drag for the first time, and who sees her? A jock from her team. Of course she knows nothing good can come of it, but Kevin does surprise her. That ends up being just the first of many surprises yet to come for them. But all the way the book never stops being funny. Dani is sometimes confused, always gorgeous and incredibly smart, but she never stops being the force turning the wheel. While Kevin on the other hand found the purpose in life once he saw the most beautiful girl/boy out there.
That said, this book deals with a serious subject, and beneath all the jokes and romance it's very profound and difficult. I loved how the issues were touched and how Kevin went through them. Actually, I think I liked Kevin more than I did Danny, but the difference is subtle, because both are very interesting and lovable characters.
That point you usually reach in books where things slow down never happened here and I was able to enjoy it from the beginning to the end.
If you don't mind a transgender subject I would definitely recommend this book. For me it was a delight and I know I will recommend it time and time again. ...more

For me it's the books which touch me in some way, which contain my kinks, but also leave me stunned, that present the challenge.
For this particular story I was convinced I wouldn't be rating it with more than four stars. It went on like that for the most of the book, but once I reached the ending (ending which was kind of bland for me when compared to the rest of it)I suddenly realized I more than liked it and I just couldn't go below 5.
Now to clarify. This story is raw, rough, cruel and most of the time illogical. There is cheating, beating, rapes, killings, torture, BDSM without all the conventional rules, insanity - complete as well as partial, there are some hard core stuff and the gentle side in general is mostly missing.
Sin and Matt change each other from the core. But not like you might read in other books. They start off violently and that part never weakens or goes soft. They kick, bite, rape, cheat and, well, almost everything you can think of, and it's not pretty. You might hate them, want to kill them, maybe even feel sorry for them, but one thing you will never do is think of them as normal or even ordinary.
I liked the flow of the story, the violence, the games, even the cheating. I understood the rapes, the abandonment and thought the side characters made the story alive. It's not a thrill - like some books sometimes are - all around. Like when you have that feeling where the book simply can't have enough pages and you're constantly on edge. It wasn't like that for me. It was interesting enough that I stayed awake and am writing this review at 8:20am after reading all night, but not unbelievably intense. Another thing that worked for me.
What I did find as a remark of sorts is the lack of sex from them. not that there wasn't any, there was enough actually, but I enjoy this kind of stuff and I needed more bite and fucking in it with that violent flare. Another thing was the ending which for me didn't fit the story. If there ever was a story which needed to end with rough, animalistic and injury prone sex, it was this one. Now, it wasn't overly sweet and mushy, in fact it was short, to the point and not altogether unsatisfying, but like I said, for me it didn't fit the rest of the story and after meeting these unique characters I needed something more primal and explosive for the finishing touch.
I truly enjoyed this book, and if someone knows another finished story from this author I would appreciate the recommendation. (or something similar when it comes to the story, characters or BDSM)
For others, I can't really recommend this. I am a firm believer in true love, where the characters don't have to choose conventional means to make it happen. My limits are few when it comes to what I don't want to or can't read and this particular book was exactly what I needed/wanted. There is everything in there and I easily could have read about rougher stuff. But there aren't many people ready for that so i would continue with caution.

I haven's actually read all of it. Maybe 83%, but at that point I got annoyed and when that happens I often just stop reading. I'm a sucker for a happy ending, and while drama is more than welcome, when everything points in the wrong direction I lose patience. That is basically what happened here. I'm a huge fan of both Boyd and Sin. They are probably the best characters I've read about ever. But Boyd was slowly getting on my nerves even in the previous book and here I came to the point where I don't like him anymore. From the stage where I wanted him to be the hero just once, I reached this level where his conclusions and decisions make me angry. Okay, I'm very frustrated. How can their relationship possibly be wrong? They were the happiest and most lever headed while they were honest and together, and suddenly that's not the case anymore. It's just wrong and I can't read what other idiotic conclusion they some up with. The only thing that I'm still interested about is if Boyd will reach level 10, even though I think that type of work is just wrong for him. Side note; I actually did read the last few paragraphs, when I needed to know how the whole ordeal would end. So I know it is a somewhat happy ending, but it wasn't enough to force me to read the last few chapters.
All together, this books is actually much better than the first one. There were less details about the missions but you get much more insight into the characters which I found intriguing and interesting. I just wish it went in a different direction.

Frustrating a lot of times, but the characters were so interesting and unique it was a joy reading about them. The only thing that I didn't much care for was the amount of self-reflecting. It slowed the story down and was often a bore. I can't help it but compare it to some of the other books I read and liked, like Cut&Run, Substitute and Special Forces. It is a read I would recommend. ...more

I'm already used to being speechless after these blissful encounters with Derekica Snake's words, so I can't really express myself the way this book deserves.
The characters are still tortured and still exceptional, the love story full of trials, mistakes and resolutions. The bad guys were probably not as strong in this one, but it didn't take anything out of the story.

The world is magnificent, the idea behind the story unique and quite beautiful. The characters are caring and kind, yet intelligent even when a bit naive. Lassen grew on me, and honestly I can put him at the very top of the list for the best character in m/m. He was so beautifully portrayed in his innocence and simple goodness that it brought me to tears at times and I couldn't read the words fast enough. Rohyr is a great ruler, fair, strong and very conscious of his desires as much as his obligations. The care he showed for the man he loved was astounding and I couldn't help it but adore him from that first talk with the elders and his overwhelming confidence.
The very bearing of a child was described to the smallest detail, giving the very notion of how much effort was invested in the concept of the story. It gripped me from the beginning to the end and I found myself enjoying their sexual endeavors, smiling at their gentleness and enduring through their pains.
It was truly a wonderful experience to read this book and I hope there will be a worthy sequel in store. ...more

Someone could have told me that I would be crying for hours even after I've read the book! I seriously considered dropping two stars because I read this genre and romance in general to avoid thinking about the harsher and unavoidable side of life. But when it smacks me in the face like it did with this books I truly want to be angry at the author for not ending the book a few chapters before. I do understand the reasons, I honestly do, but the fact is, I never would have picked it up if I had known. It is a happy ending to an extent, but having lost someone close in my life, it leaves me little comfort as I'm crying even now while writing this.
It is truly a beautiful book. The connection was so deep that it made the ending all the more painful and truthfully traumatic. I loved the concept, the births, and the romanticized side of slavery. It really is beautifully written and you can't stop before you reach the last page.
I would recommend it, if you don't mind the unavoidable end we all must face, but it is almost guaranteed that you will shed your bucket of tears while doing it.

I read this one a while back, but it stayed with me for a long time. Long enough to recommend it to a lot of people and say a lot of good things aboutI read this one a while back, but it stayed with me for a long time. Long enough to recommend it to a lot of people and say a lot of good things about it. It's on my list with the best m/m books and I'm not sure if there is but a few that top it. The story is developed in such a way that you have to keep reading. It goes in all the unpredictable directions and contains a lot of things some readers might frown upon. Still, the relationship between Konrad and Guntram is quite unique. There is hate and violence throughout the book, but underneath it all there is always love, no matter how unconventional it might be.
Konrad is a character who you want to hate from the first aggressive scene, and you pass through it thinking how the guy just has to change. But he never does. After you swallow all those 600+ pages, he is still the same bastard he was in that first scene, but you can't force yourself to hate him. Much like the rest of the book, it's a hate-love relationship, and it that order.
Guntram is much the same. He is the softer one of the two characters, and one you are more likely to love. But that doesn't mean he is flawless, far from it. He has a certain stubborn streak and a certain way of seeing things that clashes with the usual way others pass through life.
The biggest flaw is probably the spelling, and it forces people to think about continuing with the reading, but I can assure you, it is well worth the time and the frustrations it might cause.
Again, I warmly recommend this book, as one of the best I've read with the an m/m relationship that will surely stay in your memory as one you wish to read at least another 600 pages about. ...more
