Personally, I like the cover. It's sexy without being vulgar. Simple, sweet. Nice colors and details. It's not the most exciting cover ever so I don't give full stars, but yeah, I like it.
Plot - ★★★
Julia is engaged to Brad, an older man with lots of experience (and I do mean experience.) His family is the most powerful gangster family in their city which ends up putting Julia in danger. When not working at their law firm (him one of the owners, she an intern), they spend their time having sex, sex, and sex. And not just normal love-making. Kinky sex, threesomes, and they even own a strip club. The story bounces back and forth between the cover - work, planning a wedding, school, etc. And then beneath the surface - sex, learning defense, facing all the dangers that come with being involved with a gangster family.
The plot is good enough to hold my attention, but not so much that I really enjoy it. I'm not big on mob or gangster stories, so that was all just kind of eh to me. (Although if that's your thing, you'll enjoy this story.)
The sex scenes were either really sexy or just vulgar. I mean, to an extent it's good. But when they're engaged and trying to convince me they're in love - and all it is is sex? Nah, I don't buy it. I just never bought the love. I mean, she even flat out said she can't explain their love because to explain it would be to explain their sex. Really? I mean, you have nothing else you can possibly say to describe your love for each other? And constantly calling it "f*king" and not just love making or anything romantic, ever. I guess I just wish they had some toned-down sweeter moments to really show their love. I don't mind the more vulgar stuff at all. Just when I'm trying to buy into their love, I want to see that it's more than skin deep. That said, I almost think the sex scenes were more appealing to me. haha!
The rest was just a bit more boring. Work, school, bickering with friends. The parts where she was in danger were good.
I did like that the story switched points of view, between Julia and Brad - and sometimes even other characters. It was never in a way that was confusing, which is great for stories that do that.
Writing - ★★★★
The writing was descriptive, and for that I'll give extra credit. I followed everything well. Points of view switched without any confusion. There was instances where the writing annoyed me - repetition (how many times do you have to talk about crickets chirping in one paragraph??), word choice, etc. Nothing major enough to stand out in my brain, but I wasn't 100% won over by the style. But again, I did like how she described some things, gave details, etc.
Characters - ★★★
I couldn't get myself to care about the characters. There just wasn't enough emotion in it for me. But there was a variety of personalities, which is always nice.
Overall - ★★★★
Overall, it was a decent read. Sexy, steamy, just not as much depth as I would have liked. I wish they had delved more into their love - have some romance, some sweet moments, something that was just completely aww. Even one scene like that would have been nice so that I could buy in to their love. But that's really my only complaint.
I probably wouldn't read the first two, simply because I don't much care for gangster stories. However, it was good enough that I would read other stories by her.
Would I recommend it?
Sure. If you like gangster stories and aren't afraid of a "little" erotica then yeah. If you aren't big on mobs, and sex scenes intimidate you, then no, definitely not. ...more
** NOTES - Review for NetGalley. Also I didn't read the first book, so this is based on this book alone.
Simple cover. Not misleading.** NOTES - Review for NetGalley. Also I didn't read the first book, so this is based on this book alone.
Cover - ★★★
Simple cover. Not misleading. I like the bit of blood for the "bloodtide" reference. Fonts are simple enough. The panties, tan line, and expression sort of kill it for me though. I'm not sure if it's the expression or position of head, but either way, it just looks...unpleasant somehow.
Plot - ★★★
The plot is simple. Not overly cliche, but predictable enough. And the whole lust/sex scenes were always at the worst times which just made it pathetic. It was like "The worst possible thing just happened/is happening/is about to happen - yep, sounds like a good time to get horny." Really? I'm not bothered by those type scenes, but at least make it natural. Overall, it wasn't so bad. I didn't mind reading it, but it wasn't quite good enough that I'd read the first or any potential sequels.
Writing - ★★
The writing style was a bit boring and repetitive. I get it - music is a big deal. I get it - they're all "fish in a school". It was very repetitive and I (personally) have a low tolerance for repetition. It was simple. Honestly, everything about the book can best be described as "simple". The names were decent enough. Aegira (the mermaid 'town'), Lecanora, Lunia, Rania. I liked the names, so that was a plus. Oh, and there was one part in there where it was like, the villain can't touch the main character because of the love. (Now where have I heard that before?? *eyeroll*) I didn't much care for the dialogue. I'm not sure if that's how people really talk where ever the author is from, but man, it was annoying. Seemed forced and like it was meant to make "The Land" people sound far more bizarre than we actually are (which is saying something. haha) But again, if that's how people really talk in the author's area then I guess I understand. It just seemed...forced. Yeah.
Characters - ★★
There isn't much depth to the characters which is majorly important to me, and not any character growth either. Okay, there supposedly is, but it was more of a forced character growth than a believable one. A lot of characters fell completely flat. (Doug was the most non-crush-worthy lead male ever and the villain, just blah. Not scary at all.)
Overall - ★★★
There were a few aspects that I liked but they are spoilers. So it wasn't a terrible book. I think with more depth it would have been a better book. I am curious (not sure if it explains in the first book) but I almost got the feeling that these mermaids don't have tails. If I'm right, I'm still unsure how I feel about it. Definitely interesting. Yeah....It was just "alright". Not bad, not great, just okay.
Would I recommend it?
Either way. If you're looking for an amazing book to get lost in, then maybe not. But if you just want a quick read, then sure. (Although I would recommend reading the first...first - might be more helpful. haha) ...more
