The people are utterly unlikable and you don't want to be any of them. Its not so much of an escapist exercise in reading but a tragic unfolding drama of unfortunate characters. Don't get attached to any one person because like life, there aren't any real superheros here. Its a dark story about survival and base human instincts. Stephen Deas does a great job of relaying the pain some of these people go through and on many occasions brought a wince of sympathy from me. I am intrigued with this story and really want to continue with it. I especially like that it isn't tied to any one central character, well perhaps the white dragon Snow. But even that story arch can end and it would still be an interesting series to continue with.
What I found different about this series was, the author doesn't put you as the reader on this high level view where you can see the full arch of the story. You tend to feel more like a hidden observer on the ground level watching as things unfold. You may have guesses as to what is going to happen next, but you really don't know until it happens, as that next door opens and the person there walks through. But its not done in a contrived way. It never feels like the author is messing with you because he can. It feels real. and for a Fantasy book about dragons and magic, I really like that....more

It was crass and juvenile at times. But it made me laugh mostly. I liked the concept and the idea of corporate greed and how far they took their entertainment. It took me a while to get used to the narrative going from 1st person to 3rd, but once I got used to that it didn’t bother me anymore. I can’t say I liked any of the characters, but enjoyed seeing what happened to them. I am going to pick up the second book. I can’t say that I have very high hopes for it but I will give it a try.
If you don’t like brutal violence, sexist remarks, or locker room talk, this is definitely not a book for you…..me…it made me laugh. Sometimes the dialogue was so blatantly adolescent, I couldn’t help it. ...more

I felt it looked a little short for a good story and the story lines jumped right into themes of instant "love" I hate that! nothing ruins a book for me more than a cheesy lover story. But as the story went on it got better and better. I was able to over look the part I didnt care for and get lost in the great characters and story telling. Gemmell is truly one of the best action writers I have every read. I am definitely becoming a Gemmellhead.
Although not as good as Legend or the Sword in the storm, it is worth reading....more

None of them are heroes in the sense of the word, but flawed in many ways. unworthy even. You really have to suspend your sense of reality to get into this book. Impossible things happen really fast and all have a heavy impact on the world. A world that seems really small. The characters seem determined to make you believe that they are everything they present themselves as, but you can see that its a pretty thin layer and they are destined to act otherwise.
The book does a good job of spreading the adventure out over the 5 main protagonist and supporting cast. Not spending too much time on any of them and tying them all back to each others fate. Although 1 or 2 have their relevance still in question by the end of this book. Maybe they come into play in book 2.
I liked the mythological creatures and how the author positioned their way of thinking about humanity. I am looking forward to reading the second book. 2nd books tend to be my favorite. ...more

By 2 3rds of the book I am wondering how so much has happened already. Not a page wasted. His characters come off the page and into the story and leave a lasting impression, even after they have died. and many of his heroes will die.
He makes courage and honor something real to me. His characters are terribly flawed and their actions have consequences, usually not good ones. But they are human. and they act in human ways. Sometimes heroic, sometimes selfishly.
I also like the way Gemmell handles romance this book. It's there, but its not so overwhelmingly sappy that I lose interest.
This book has made me a huge fan of David Gemmell. I will be reading more of his stuff. ...more

It had a lot of action and bloody scenes. What I thought was refreshing about the story was the tragedy. People die in this book, heroes and bad guys alike. I have to say that I really didn’t care for the love story. I felt it was the one part that was completely unnecessary. It made the book more light weight than it would have been otherwise. But everything else was great. Unlikely heroes, bonds of friendship, and a touch of magic. All the things I like in a fantasy book. The dialogue was well written and the reflections on what it is to be a hero was striking. This is several leaps over your common sword and sorcery book. I will read another Gemmell book. ...more

I don't feel like they are the kind of adventure books that really draw me in, but they do have a quality that keeps my interests....They are very linier. They seem like they can go on forever and would still be interesting. Her characters grow, and not always in ways that you would think. Some characters make appearances and seem like main characters, and then they die. A lot like life I guess. they aren't as rich in dialogue or personality as say, Joe Abercrombie, but still a good read. Sometimes the story will take a huge leap in relations or time but it will quickly bring you back with the next point of interest or goal the heroes need to achieve. just like the last series I read by this author,Renshai Trilogy, there aren't many highs or lows, but lots of medium level action. Well, It started off really interesting with Cale and how he and his friends were brought up and how they had to escape. Then it almost lost me somewhere in the middle where I felt like the writing started to summarize events to move the story on faster. I felt that this was unnecessary and cheapened the experience. THEN, it added the love story. I have to say that I really hate the typical young adult love story in the books that I read. This part really felt truly unnecessary. Fortunately this didn't last. The story picked up again and caught my interest.
Although I liked the book. I felt that parts of it were a little clunky in it's delivery and the constant references to real people and places kept throwing me off. I had to just give up and not try to visualize its location. The dialogue was good. The characters are well written and their personalities come out on the pages.
By the end of the book the author had me interested and my rating moved from a 3 star (a decent book) to a 4 star (a good, fun, interesting book) promising more to come. It ends just as it gets really good. I am definitely going to read the second book. I hope its less young adult and more good, gritty, dark fantasy.
I heard that this was a translation. Maybe that's what caused the parts I wasn't to crazy about...maybe. ...more

Although it still had elements of quickly sketched dialog between characters that at times made me cringe. Only because of the fact that I was enjoying the story up to that point. But the good part was that they didn’t last long and he got back to the interesting parts again. At times I felt that that the author was on the brink of going deeper and reveling true genius in storytelling and then he would get scared and back off and land on the superficial. The good thing is this did not ruin the story for me. But it did make me hope for something more and be slightly disappointed that he didn’t deliver. This has the makings of a true fantasy classic if only Mr. Brett would free himself and let his characters have depth. They are almost there, just not quite. I heard that he intends this to be 5 books long so I can only imagine that we have a long way to go and a lot of story to get through. I am looking forward to the next book and hope that he only builds upon what is there and really brings the characters to life. ...more

It took me a while to get over the “speaking Griffin” but once I did I was completely drawn inot the story. I like the characters and world they were in. I think I especially liked the point of view of the Griffins them selves. It was a different angle on this kind of story telling. I finished in 3 days so that tells you that I read it every chance I got. It kept my interest all the way through. Even past the ending. I am now waiting for the next book. But I cant really see where it will go, this one ended in an odd place. But then again, that is probably why I like it and cant wait to get the next one.
This book is more on the darker side with lots of blood and a hero that is not always on the winning side. If you like tragic heroes I think you will like this story.

It wasn't as dark or action packed as I liked, but I have to say that the writing was very good. It truly is like hearing a story being told. Rothfuss has a beautiful flow of the language. They way he puts his words together make it very easy to follow and be interested in the story whether you like the characters or not. And I have to say that I didnt really like any of the characters. I am more interested in what happens instead of who it happens too. Again, its like hearing a story being told in a very effective way. You listen, you may even not believe some of it. But it is undeniably interesting and engaging.
I will definitely read the 2nd book.

Robin Hobb has a way of telling a story that has a natural flow to it. I found myself hating the bad guys and wishing bad things to happen to them. even though I figured out what was going to happen before it happened. I still found my self looking forward to getting there. I was impressed with how little time she spent on romance. No love so heavy they forget everything else. It had more of a reality to it. Fitz, fell for someone, but didn't linger on it and just dealt with the rejection in a realistic way. I liked that. Life is full of disappointments. I am tired of reading action books that insert a sappy love story right in the middle of it.

I wasn't sure what I was reading. Was this a LOTR type story with magic and strange creatures? Was it a knights of the round table type of story? Well....its kind of both. It hints at magic (sometimes more than hints), it has plenty of knights in armor, but mostly it's drama. Good drama. the story revolves around characters, not environment. I picture it as a story of what life may have been like during LOTR before everything went to hell. Court life, honer and betrayal, murder, incest, coming of age. Everything around them is accepted, not fantastic, which makes getting into it really easy. Most of the characters are both likable and unlikable. They are all too human. There aren't any real super heroes here. So relating to any number of characters is also easy.
Martin almost gives too much detail but stops short of boring the hell out of you and then gives you something worth reading through for. It all comes together nicely. I am looking forward to reading book 2. ...more
