Not as much a love story as a historical fiction adventure set in America, dealing with the grips of the Depression, poor Alice has a love for books, that is a little too much and costs her the courtship of a boyfriend, she thought was alright, and finds herself on an adventure in the mountains, that takes her breath away.
I love books. I love reading and "Wonderland Creek" was a perfect blend of a passion for books, and a lesson how sometimes, life can be just as stranger, if not just as fun as the books themselves.
The characters are lovable and though there is no falling through a rabbit's hole or Mad Hatter's tea party to be found, what readers will find is a perfect book for the holidays and vacations, that will leave you smiling, laughing and yes, there is a touch of romance, but in a more Laurel and Hardy sense that will leave you chuckling throughout the book.
The story starts off with a misadventure that lands poor Alice in hot trouble and what she discovers as she grows throughout the book, not only wisens her but touches the lives of all those who are around her.
This is just a really fun book to read and I enjoy reading, "Wonderland Creek" and the way it shows that hey, being a librarian isn't so boring after all.

Despite their reputation for being independent, anti-social creatures, the cat that we have and is a part of the family, has both changed our view of this "mysterious species" and warmed our hearts including those who didn't have much love (or care for cats), so I found myself just connecting with how cats are a reminder, in a lot of ways, how God's word itself, can warm and become a part of our own hearts.
Beginning with delightful quotes, filled with scripture and thought provoking questions, that takes a feline adventures and asks the reader, life applicable situations, "The Cat Lover's Devotional" is a purrrfect, cold weather, in need of a heart lift, encouragement, read that will delight the hearts of even those who do not own cats.
I thought this was perfect for those who do own cats, and could relate to the idiosyncrasy behavior of cats and also understand the complexity of feline behavior that often shows a sense of companionship and warmth that is comparable to dogs, but also different in that, while dogs are completely open to anyone, cats tend to require more time and trust to develop that friendship.
However, this isn't a book about cats and their idosyncrasy...this is a book sharing God's perspective and encouragement from the viewpoints of felines; Stories are short and make for great morning devotionals and readers would enjoy sharing this with fellow cat lovers or just those looking for encouragements to start their day.

With "The 365 Most Important Bible Passages for You: Daily Readings and Meditations on Experiencing God's Richest Blessings in Your Life" by Jonathan Rogers, instead of just opening the bible at random and going from there, the reader will find themselves guided on a daily journey with key passages picked from the bible and enriching anecdotes that will bring to life, that day's scriptural passage.
Combining God's timely word with modern examples that the reader can connect and apply to their life, "The 365 Most Important Bible Passages for You: Daily Readings and Meditations on Experiencing God's Richest Blessings in Your Life" is a roughly 10 minute read that for many people who are on the go, would find beneficial to consider for their daily devotional time.
Note this isn't a bible study but rather just select passages, each day, that will give readers a chance to read select passages and a chance to start their day with passages from God's word, the bible.
The font is good for ease of reader, the New American Standard Bible is used for the selected passages and there is a good balance of showing how relevant and timeless God's word is to readers, no matter the age, or time or place that His word is use.
This is a stylish, relevant and yet timeless devotional book that either yourself or maybe someone close to you, whose looking for a daily devotional book, would enjoy using.

I really enjoy reading and going through this devotional book and it is something that I think is just fun and inspiring for pre-teens to use.
The cover is eye-catching, and filled with basic day to day truths that are grounded in God's truths. Geared for ages 9 to 12, the girl(s) in your life will love how this will encourage them to explore God's word, journal, answer in depth questions and all within a short time frame.
The cover again, its so cute and eye catching and it is everything that a girl would enjoy including with her studies (including if she has a pink bible that has a glittery cover on it).
What makes this a great devotional is that it does what it needs to do, really encourage our pre-teens to develop the habit at an early age and not be intimidated about studying, reading and getting to know God's word.
This does it.
It encourages the girl(s) in your life to think about the real world applications about God's word and how it does apply in their life and like the boy's devotional, make it fun, exciting, applicable and its short so they can start, slowly, early on, developing a habit of reading His word, particularly if they haven't developed that habit early on.

This is a fantastic, cute (okay, it's a boy's devotional, maybe we shouldn't say "cute" but eye catching), smart written book geared toward boys, like the girl's counterpart, that caters to a boys need for action, thrills and adventure. Geared for ages nine to twelve, "Triple Dog Dare: A year of Dynamic Devotions for Boys" shows boys how God's word is applicable to every part of life and at the same time, encouraging godly virtues that will stay with them, as they grow older.
The cover page to "Triple Dog Dare: A year of Dynamic Devotions for Boys" is, what can I say, "all boy" and really appeals to their need for something that doesn't look fluffy that they wouldn't be embarrassed if it fell out of their backpacks (come on Moms, our little guys don't want to be embarrassed) and yet at the same time, a great way for them to break the ice with their friends and peers at school.
With exercises that include: drawing comic strips of biblical battles, dreaming up a life list of goals, making snack packs for the homeless or producing Bible-based movies, this makes a great gift for the holidays, baptism or just to overall encourage the boy in your life, to have a deeper relationship with our Father in Heaven and to strengthen or teach him virtues to help him as he grows.
So "Triple Dog Dare" that special boy in your life or family and introduce them to, "Triple Dog Dare: A year of Dynamic Devotions for Boys"; You might be surprised how they take to daily devotions using this devotional.(less)

A story of strength, faith and hope, Nadine shares her inspiring story as she follow God's desires for her life, sometimes, not always knowing what laid ahead of her, and all the while, dealing with the devastating loss of her husband
Taking readers to the war stricken land of Kosovo and the events leading up to her travel there, that changed her life, inspired the lives of others and will encourage those who are faced with devastating circumstances in their own life,"When You Don't See His Plan: The Nadine Hennesey Story " , is a first person story that will take readers to what feels like the ends of the world and the edge of emotions.
Filled with personal anecdotes and encouragement, not to mention reminders of the sacrifices that missionaries make to share not only God's word, but acts of love and compassion, often in places where those simple virtues seem absent,"When You Don't See His Plan: The Nadine Hennesey Story " inspires the readers that no matter what the circumstances are in their life, that they can overcome, even when we may not see God's total plan at hand.

The reader will find themselves swept up into Russia's rich history as one of their well known rulers, Catherine the Great and re-imagining of her transformation from a German princess to a Tsar of Russia.
Detailing the political and personal experiences of a political figure of the eighteenth century, in a very detailed, historical fiction, readers will find themselves, looking with a new perspective into a time of political upheaval and political games.
For those who are looking for light reading, this is not light reading, instead, you will find yourself swept up with learning more about not only political, but military, cultural and even social mores of eighteenth century Russia, so prepare to find yourself, having to spend quality time, absorbing a story that follows the rise of a simple princess to that of a ruler.
"Catherine" was an interesting read and if you get the hardback, you'll find yourself with substantial reading material, so I would suggest, if you can get this via an e-reader, this is the best route to go, but for those with an affinity for historical fiction that definitely get into the deeper aspects of history, "Catherine" is recommended. Despite the whispers about the house and its past,"A Sound Among the Trees" is an entrancing contemporary fiction, that will have readers wrapped up in a story of letting go and moving forward, that will resonant after the book is done.
Heads up to Christian readers who are discerning when it comes to reading material that references supernatural, there are some references to a medium, BUT, don't let this stop you in your tracks.
"A Sound Among the Trees" is a moving, beautiful written story, that set in contemporary times, still pulls the reader, into a never-old tale of growth, redemption, moving forward, and learning to let go. Filled with the richness of the South, the reader will be taken away, into the halls of Holly Oak, as they along with Marielle balance the struggles of adjusting to a new life and the past of Holly Oaks.
There is a theme that centers around a comment that Adelaide makes in the book, "People will think what they want. They will always think what they want", and her comment seems to flow throughout the story of, "A Sound Among the Trees" and in the reactions of the people who inhabit and interact in Holly Oaks.
What struck me so much, was the themes about family and memories and holding on to pains, both real and perceive, and both the anguish and lost that it could cost a person, creating a heart felt story that will leave readers hanging on, to the very end and reaching for a tissue box.
Within its pages, "A Sound Among the Trees", is a stirring tale that readers of contemporary fiction, will find beautiful, haunting and endearing to read.

Filled with rich details of the Yemeni culture from meals to wedding traditions to basic phrases that are customary to greet each other, what makes, "Behind the Veils of Yemen" stands out, is that this isn't about just the women of Yemen, that Audra encountered and ministered, but how her and her family life there, were transformed and their faith in God was strengthened by their personal experiences.
The stories she shares are haunting and presents a look, "Behind the Veils of Yemen" , that those in the States often don't hear or maybe only hear very brief glimpses of and the way, Audra, writes, is a story that is filled with strength and hope, in and through our Father in Heaven.
I felt that the ending of the book was a bit rushed and yearned to find out more about what happen after the events in Yemen, but the rest of the book, is a powerful testimony to the spirit of faith, hope and persistence.
The reader will find themselves hanging on to the detail of daily life of the Yemeni culture as shared by Audra and the complicated interactions she find, living as a foreigner among the Yemeni people.
Her experiences are both eye-opening, heart breaking, convicting and live readers asking, how strong are they to be able to do the same as Audra and her family.
Although the book shares about the Muslim women that Audra encountered and befriended, if you are expecting a "missionary book" about conversions, Audra doesn't focus on that; Instead, she focuses on the real life struggles and experiences of being a missionary family in the Middle East, learning both the languages and customs, sharing personal insights into the culture and on the trials that her and her family personally endure of times of sickness that they had encountered and how as Christians, sharing the Gospel with other faiths and culture.
This isn't really a book that focuses a lot on the Yemen women or culture, but rather is more like a personal biography of one missionary families experience, but it is still a compelling and fascinating read to look into.

Designed for the busy woman who finds herself stretched for time and seeking a bible study that doesn't have an overwhelming commitment to time, particularly in today's busy world, the reader will find, "Fresh Life Series", "Live Reflectively: Lessons from the Watershed Moments of Moses", both accommodating to their busy schedules and at the same time, providing a pretty in depth bible study that will surprise them.
Don't let the twenty minutes a day, fool you, this isn't a simple bible study, that you will fly through, but rather, for twenty minutes, the reader will find themselves, digging pretty dip into the bible and faced with thought provoking study questions and side notes, that will leave you, at the end of the twenty minutes, surprised at how much you will glean from each bible study.
In, "Live Reflectively: Lessons from the Watershed Moments of Moses", Lenya Heitzig and Penny Rose, addresses, from the perspective of what Moses had to go through, watershed moments in the believers own life and showing how Moses persisted and overcome, with the help of Father in Heaven, how they can apply the same biblical principles in their own life.
Like the rest of the "Fresh Life Series", "Live Reflectively: Lessons from the Watershed Moments of Moses" uses the basic formula of: Lift up (Prayer) Look at (God's Word) Learn about (new insights) Live out (application) Listen to (quotes from other believers)
Whether you use this study via the book itself, on an ipod, ipad, tablet, whatever the method, I discovered, with surprise, that in twenty minutes, a lot of material is actually covered and I come away from the study, probably learning more in a convenient twenty minute time frame, then if I tried a longer time frame, which, with a busy household, is more of a gift, than a given.
The book, "Live Reflectively: Lessons from the Watershed Moments of Moses", has an almost workbook feel to it, with plenty room to write notes in, if you are the type to write in your bible studies, and I find it hard to resist, copying the same side notes that are shared in the book, in my bible as I was studying, because of the "I didn't know that" moments, that would come up each day.
For twenty minutes, five days out of the week, a lot, and I mean a lot is covered and it really had me interested in wanting to invest in the rest of the series, not just for personal use, but in use in a small bible study group.
The notes in the back of the book(s) offers a lot of additional reference material to explore, if you had the time and the patience to do so, but from, what was just presented in the material itself, covered a good spectrum of information and guidance.
Maybe you know a new believer who can benefit from this, trying to set aside quiet time yourself or seeking for a great bible study to share in your bible study group, I highly recommend this and the rest of the "Fresh Life" series. (less)

In Live Abundantly, Bible teachers Lenya Heitzig and Penny Pierce Rose challenge you to dig deep into the book of Ephesians to find the spiritual treasure God has for you. Covering topics such as living in God’s will and receiving peace no matter the circumstances, the book of Ephesians reveals the magnitude of every Christian’s inheritance, a gift "exceedingly abundantly above" what you could ever ask for.
"Live Abundantly: A Study in Ephesians" does exactly that and more....using the formula of:
Lift up (prayer) Look at (God's Word) Learn about (new insights) Live out (application) Listen to (quotes from other believers)
The reader is presented with the "Fresh Life" series familiar breakdown, of 5 days of study for each study, ancedotes and interesting tidbits, that really livens up that days studies, occasional word studies that really eliminates the need of a Lexicon or Concordance, unless you have the time (or if you have an ipod, ipad or tablet) to use them.
Despite the fact that the book promises, 20 minutes of bible study, each day, the reader, like myself, will find themselves on a surprisingly deeper journey into the bible and in this case, Ephesians, than what one normally would expect from a "short bible study", so you will find yourself, really getting into a very deep, "meaty" bible study with each of the "Fresh Life" series and finding yourself, surprisingly getting more out of a short bible study, then other bible studies may provide.
I found myself not only hook, but thinking, this is a series that is worth investing in, not only for personal bible time, but makes for a great bible study for small groups, that often are short, not only on time, but you won't find yourself having to bring several books, or having to worry about intensive prep time.
It's all there, with engaging study questions, side notes that are informative, attention grabbing anecdotes and more that really livens up that day study and every so often, a brief word study.
With Ephesians, its probably a widely read book in the bible, but the authors of the "Fresh Life" series, really have brought Ephesians to life in a whole new way and along with it, a deeper look at the importance of Ephesians and the place it has, along with the message it holds, for the follower of Christ.
This is something I would recommend for a new believer, maybe a busy friend or mom that I know in my life, that is finding it difficult to find time for a quality bible study, and like myself, want something that is in depth but can accommodate a busy schedule, without sacrificing the quality of the study.
"Live Abundantly: A Study in Ephesians" really shows that its not about the quantity of time that is spent, but rather quality and this is a high quality bible study that will help not only encourage women to take a deeper look into the bible, but makes it understandable, accessible and accommodating for any schedule.
Be prepared for a bible study, that, although it appears to be short and simple, will take you on a deep journey into the Bible.

A great gift to give for those who are close to you, maybe a sister, a mom, an aunt, a best friend, "A Woman's Walk in Truth: Devotions for Living a Confident Faith ", will lift the hearts and spirit.
The devotions shared, are short and a great starter for one's personal quiet time and if you run a woman's study group and looking for ways to inspire the women in your group, "A Woman's Walk in Truth: Devotions for Living a Confident Faith " will help inspire and encourage you and your group.
I like the sweet simplicity of the devotions, they are like short bursts of encouragement that really help jump start the day, and definitely something worth looking into.

Truth is, manner, have a superficial understanding of Christian doctrine, maybe barely read the bible, other than on Sunday and would have a hard time explaining or even defending their faith, and in "Dug Down Deep: Unearthing What I Believe and Why it Matters", we meet someone who struggle with those very same issues, who lived a life that many would consider, "just on the surface" and takes us on a layman's understanding of discovery, awakening and growth.
This is a wonderful and powerful book, that I would personally recommend to anyone, who wants to live a more authentic faith and its written in a non-complicated, non-academic, we're not the only one to feel what we feel, way that in a world where the church is becoming an empty shell for many, and more are just walking away from the faith, unearthing the reasonings behind why-many of us, simply don't understand basic doctrine as well as we think we do.
"Dug Down Deep: Unearthing What I Believe and Why it Matters" is hard hitting in an emotional way; This is a pastor who shared a common background like many Christians, who probrably live a faith that is just enough, but never deeper than that and for him, Joshua Harris, searched for a deeper reason why and understanding.
He shows too that we don't have to have theological degrees, go to seminaries, but simply read God's word, the Bible, and many of the books, he shared he read, is available to everyday people as well, but the simple truth, is that as we will see in, "Dug Down Deep: Unearthing What I Believe and Why it Matters", many times, we take being a Christian for granted, until the hard questions come our way.
What I love about this book is that, he really shares about basic principles about doctrine that is scriptural strong and helps both new Christians, the "mature" Christian and even the "Growing" Christian, how to have a stronger foundation, but also see how that, no one is perfect and like many, often just don't understand their faith, beyond the Sunday School teachings or the weekly sermons, but if asked to explain, not many honestly can explain the basic doctrines/theology as Joshua Harris discovers.
From "Dug Down Deep: Unearthing What I Believe and Why it Matters", Joshua Harris, shares, "The doctrine of Scripture teaches us about the authority of God's Word. Scripture must be the final rule of faith and practice for our lives. Not our feelings or emotions. Not signs or prophetic words or hunches."
This is a book that will encourage you...challenge you...provoke you to ask yourself...what is it about Scripture that you really know and will have you re-searching, reading, re-learning and digging deep into Scripture to understand, why and what it is you believe.

In the grips of the Spanish flu and WWI, the protagonist, Rebekah, uses the opportunity to visit her aunt, to escape the grips of a domineering mother, the slowness of farm life and a hopeful reunion, with her fiance' Arthur, all the while, dreaming big dreams that takes her away from the life she knows, to a bigger life that she doesn't know.
"Wings of a Dream" doesn't end as easily as many readers would expect and despite the setup, isn't a historical romance, but instead, more of a strong, well written, historical fiction, about a young girl, learning to trust God in the smaller details of her life, and learning, that not everything turns out like we dream, but that doesn't mean for the worse.
There is a fantastic blend of the modern, such as the presence of automobiles and planes, with the traditional, where butter is still churned, and the luxury of air conditioning and heater isn't available yet, but a strong sense of family and community is always available.
What I enjoy about "Wings of a Dream" is that the reader doesn't get a routine ending where girl falls in loves and falls happily ever after in love, but instead, Ms. Mateer's main character, Rebekah, finds herself growing from a naive young farm girl, to a mature, strong woman who in addition to find herself learning what does it mean to fall in love, to sometimes the life we think we want, is often the life we didn't expect.
The reader will find detailed snippets that will bring them in the homes of 1900's family life while at the same time, experiencing, even in brushes, the horrors that the Spanish Flu visited upon families and towns.
"Wings of a Dream" is an example of historical fiction that, using realistic historical events, bring to the reader, not only a rich and detail background, but the characters will draw the reader in and this is not a simple read, but instead a story that develops into a life of its own.
By the end of the reading, you will find yourself becoming a part of the Prater Junction, Texas town, while at the same time, learning like Rebekah did, that sometimes the things that are worthwhile isn't quite exactly like what we may imagine them to be, but often, even in the simpler things of life, isn't what we try to run away from, but what we run into.
"Wings of a Dream" is a story of trusting God and what He places in our lives and also appreciation for what He brings into our lives, even if it may have run contrary to what we wanted or thought our lives would be.
With the cold winter nights upon us, grab a copy of, "Wings of a Dream" and let Anne Mateer whisk you back in time.

In,"Start Here, Go Anywhere: Making good choices, recovering from bad ones ", Richie Hughes, explores from a biblical standpoint, the choices that we all make and how to not only recover from the bad ones (and we're going to make bad choices), but make choices, that, with prayer, would be pleasing to God.
In Chapter One, Richie Hughes, shares the following: "This is because our choices will always reflect our values. When obeying God is a priority, our choices will reflect that. We will do our best to avoid making decisions that harm our witness or are contrary to God’s Word."
Yet as we all know, we often make choices based on the spur of the moment, or emotions, or peer pressure and fear of not conforming to other's standards, whatever the reason, by trusting God, and learning from our past mistakes and allowing Him to work in our lives, we all can learn to, "Start Here, Go Anywhere: Making good choices, recovering from bad ones ".
Truth is....no one is perfect and through personal stories and anecdotes, Richie Hughes, shares about the loving grace and mercy of our Heavenly Father, who sees and knows, we all make mistakes and will make mistakes and shows how we can recover.
At first glance, the reader might be skeptical about reading,""Start Here, Go Anywhere: Making good choices, recovering from bad ones " but this is really, a very scriptural-based, affirming, well written, book that will help keep the reader strengthen and encouraged, that there is hope as long as we realize, we can turn to God, and He is always there.
Maybe you know someone in your life whose backslidden and know feels there is no hope, or maybe someone who doesn't know Christ and feels that they are not "worthy" or "good enough",or maybe, as a reader, you find yourself in a position, where you find it hard to go to God for forgiveness.....Whatever is the case,""Start Here, Go Anywhere: Making good choices, recovering from bad ones " is a wonderful reminder that we can recover in and through our Father in Heaven.

Instead, what I found in,"How Do We Know the Bible is True"? was a series of essays, that are written by different individuals, that are written in the form of questions, that were answered, with well wrapped up conclusions, summing up the individual's perspective on questions such as:,
"Is the Old Testament Reliable"
"How do we know the Bible is true"
"How to properly view Evidence",
to name, really a few of the questions that are posed in Volume 1 of, "How Do We Know the Bible is True".
The book doesn't go in depth with many of the challenging questions that are posed and at 296 pages, new Christians, those who are growing in the faith, maybe even those who are interested or have questions about the faith, will find this book, "How Do We Know the Bible is True"? to be a useful source as a starting point, in digging deeper into the bible and finding a direction to many questions that are asked by Non-Christians and Christians alike.
There are cartoon like illustrations that are peppered throughout the book, that help bring a tongue in the cheek humor to, "How Do We Know the Bible is True"? and the reader will find that this is not a book, just by Ken Ham and Bodie Hodge, but rather a collection of easy to read essays that even a student in 5th grade and up would find resourceful.
With contributions from Dr. Joseph Lisle, Dr. Timothy Mitchell, Dr. Terry Mortenson, to name a few, to those who are more well known such as Dr. John MacArthur, Mr.Ken Ham, the readers will find a variety of insights in typical topics of discussions, that come up, regarding the validity of the bible.
I enjoy the honesty and ease of reading that, "How Do We Know the Bible is True"? , and along with it, a challenging look at, "How Do We Know the Bible is True"? .
For those who are seeking answers to common questions regarding the bible and its validity, "How Do We Know the Bible is True"?, makes for a very good start.

Filled with recommendations to paintings, music, scripture, poetry or even videos, at the end of each chapter, reader will find, "Stained Glass Hearts" to be a reminder how God can turned brokenness and darkness into light that lifts and edifys His name.
"Stained Glass Hearts" read like a personal journey and it was heartfelt in that it really exposes Patsy Clairmont's heart to the reader and the open heart words she shares, really lifts the reader up to be encouraged in hard times.
Mixing themes of art and creativity with personal ancedotes, "Stained Glass Hearts" was a very unique read.(less)

With, "The Seven Prayers God Always Answers: God's Promises for Everyone, Everywhere, Every Time", the reader is treated by Jason Frenn, into a breakdown of prayers, that God calls us to connect with Him about and in the process, an encouragement to develop a more comfortable approach with praying to God, treating it like a daily conversation, that plays a role in the growth and maturity of a believer.
This isn't about treating, prayer as a wish machine, or at the same time, treating it as something that is difficult to approach, but one would be surprised how difficult prayer or having a prayer life is for many.
Along with instructions in the back about creating a prayer journal, this is a really good encouragement for those who are new to the faith, maybe you are struggling in developing a stronger prayer life or have questions about prayer, but felt timid asking about it...the biggest thing is that, "The Seven Prayers God Always Answers: God's Promises for Everyone, Everywhere, Every Time " is that it is a reminder that God isn't inaccessible to anyone and He is always there, wants to be there, and wants us to know we can come to Him in prayer and conversation.
Prayer shouldn't be intimidating and with, "The Seven Prayers God Always Answers: God's Promises for Everyone, Everywhere, Every Time", it is a great encouragement to motivate people to look into the power of prayer.(less)

Don writes in the afterward,"Love can change the world, and faith can get us through tough times. But sometimes we act like we can live without hope. I don't know about you, but the times I'm best at loving and being faithful are the times I'm also filled with a sense of hope."
Can't that be said about any of us.
We have our faith and we have love for those who are around us and even those we've yet to know, but in "God Makes Lemonade", these series of collections, take things one more and adds hope to the mixture.
For many....its more than just having faith, but also having that needed hope, not about the future, but about the next hour, or the next day, and with, "God Makes Lemonade", Don Jacobson, brings a collection, that is a reminder, of those lemonade moments, when life seemed sour, only to have God sweeten it unexpectedly.
Something to note about, "God Makes Lemonade", not only does it bring, to the reader, a collection of stories that enrich the heart, but proceeds from the book, goes to the LemonAid Foundation, that is geared toward supporting single moms.
No matter where you are in life, this is a collection of stories, that will lift your heart, bring tears to your eyes and a humble reminder of the life, God has blessed us with. (less)

This is not a book that trashes the husband, but instead, as the author, Carla Anne Coroy, loving shares in the preface, "A solo parent is someone who is raising children and running a home and family alone" (pg.11), and geared toward married women whose husbands jobs require them to be away from home majority of the time.
Addressing topical issues such as discipline, chore divisions, life in the community and more, "Married Mom, Solo Parent", doesn't demonizes husbands whose keep depends on them, often working away from the home, bringing to mind, women whose husbands are in the military or are workaholics and even if they aren't workaholics, just required to travel as part of their job requirement, Carla Anne Coroy uses both grace, humor, honesty and Scripture to help encourage married women on how to balance: life, raising children and being a wife and woman.
I like how on page 45, Carla Anne Coroy shared honestly, the double jeopardy that a married woman, whose solo parenting feels when she (Carla Anne Coroy) shares the following observation: "Many solo parents are afraid of being honest, at least out loud, about the situation they are in. After years of hearing that we need to respect, honor and support our husbands, we find it difficult to speak truth when it does not make shine. We're afraid of being the woman who trashes her husband with her words or ruins his reputation in his absence. So we carry the shame: shame of being the unsatisfied wife, of spinning a yarn of excuses, of what our situation may symbolize or predict."
She presents hope though when she later says,"It took me many years to respectfully tell the truth regarding Trent's choices. We have to remember that God calls us to be imitators of Christ. Jesus often offended others. As a matter of fact, he was called the Rock of Offense (Rom 9:33 NASB,KJV). Naturally, we need to be careful. The truth we speek needs to be covered in love".
With a chapter, written by her husband, sharing a husband's viewpoint and offering from a male perspective, what husbands usually see and/or don't often say about a "Married Mom, Solo Parent", this is a book that needs to be read by those who are going through the,"Married Mom, Solo Parent" stages in their life and also should and need to be read not only by those who may know of women in those situations, to help gain a better insight of what life is really like for the, "Married Mom, Solo Parent", but even by those who are involved in the church in whatever capacity, for a better understanding of how the body of Christ can reach out to those moms who are not single, but not fully married either.
Painful examples are shared by Carla Coroy, such as being rejected by a church's "handyman" service offered to single moms who don't have husbands in their lives, by sheer virtue, she was married, although her husband was away and not actively involved in the family's life, during that time period.
It led to thoughts...not only just her experience, but what of moms whose spouses were in the military....were their needs for help around the home, be it, fixing the sink, or in Carla's case, needing help, installing fans in the homes, being ignored and how we as a society, not only has changed, but that reaching out to the community, also means not ignoring the fact, that by virtue of "being married" does that mean, a family always have, one of the parent, available, be it due to medical related reasons, or in this case, one of the spouse, being required to be out of town, leaving the other spouse, with the full brunt of the responsibility.
I bristled at the story of how Carla and her family were excluded at a family dinner sponsored by a church and how she ended up sitting alone, quietly crying, with her kids, and yet, as Christians, are we not all members of the same family, irregardless, if we are single, married or the spouse is not at home for whatever reason.
In addition to encouraging words of scripture and encouragement, that as a, "Married Mom, Solo Parent", I was floored by the statistics that Carla shared, that many of us, may not think about or take for granted, such as the fact that 84% of "married single moms" find vehicle maintenance and repair a difficulty.
One of the first two chapters, "This is Not what I signed up for" and "The Emotions of a Solo Parents", really hit hard to the root of the matter, for many women, who find themselves, living separate lives, while their husbands were not at home to "help out", and Carla does a wonderful job of gently encouraging, "Married Mom, Solo Parent" to find ways to not only confront their emotions, but how to deal with their emotions in a way that doesn't adversely affect the marriage.
I could relate to the feelings that Carla shared and the helpful advice she offers to,"Married Mom, Solo Parent", who feel alone and how to find group support in the form of through bible studies, going to the park, joining mom groups and if that doesn't work, find ways, oneself, to get out of the comfort zone and connect with other moms, particularly, others moms who are going through the same, awkward life style, of the mom, often having to play both duties, while dad is away.
She also offers realistic and sound ways to honoring and loving the man in your life, even if its often long distance and offers a needed reminder, that no matter what, he is the father, that the kids need.
Its easy to approach situations, like this, with cynicism, or as Carla Coroy shares in the book, feeling "emotional divorce" already from your husband, but she shows there is not only life, but hope and there is a relationship that can happen and that the "Married Mom, Solo Parent" and her spouse can make things work.
It's difficult to go over everything that is in the book, in a review, but this is a much needed book, in today's world and as Carla Coroy shared in the preface, "Each solo parent has a unique set of circumstances. Your struggles will be different from mine. Every generation has had its share of married solo parents. Yet somewhere along the line, we've forgotten how it is done: how a woman with a husband does the job of raising her kdis when he is not around."
If you are one of these moms, know someone who is, want to understand more about the married single mom, or part of a church seeking to reach moms who are married and yet solo parenting their kids while their spouses are away for indefinite times for whatever the reason, this is a book that all must read and comes highly recommended.
"Married Mom, Solo Parent" is an excellent book and a humbling read and if you are a "Married Single Mom", essentially a mom who, although married, but due to your spouse not being home fully all the time, due to his job, it's so easy for the reader to relate and know they are not alone going through being a "Married Mom, Solo Parent".
Carla Coroy doesn't promise that it will be easy and there are tears, but there is also laughter, and hope and smiles. Check out,"Married Mom, Solo Parent" and discovered more about what it means to be a, "Married Mom, Solo Parent" and how no matter what, to God be all the glory, that for the, "Married Mom, Solo Parent", there is hope, there is encouragement and there is strength.(less)

Feeling more like a "gift book" than really an encouragement for prayer, reading, the prayers, although title for the "times" the prayer was directed at, still made "At the Throne of Grace: A Book of Prayers", difficult to read.
This was disappointing, because John MacArthur is a very encouraging and inspiring individuals, and having read his many other books, this particular one felt more of a let down of what was usually expected.
I feel this would be a good book, for those who enjoy reading prayer books that are specifically prayers that are shared by others and with the holidays coming up, those who are admirers of John MacArthur would appreciate receiving this as a gift.

The story of a strong, independent woman and a Texas Ranger, undercover, set in the not so wild frontier of Texas,"Love on the Line" had all the elements of a perfect Friday night reading, to cozy up with, next to the fire, with a rich, hot chocolate on the table beside you.
The characters are well developed, the background for the story, well researched, and just even the backstory, of the main character, Georgie Gail, will have the reader, caught up till the very end of this wildly, funny, filled with charm, reading.
What makes,"Love on the Line" just a sweet and fun read, is that this is not your usual, sugary love story, but a story about standing up for what you believe in, about honesty, about the strength of character, that makes this book stand out as a Christian based story, historical fiction with a perfect touch of romance that is really more touching then ever, that will leave the reader, swooning for a "Luke Palmer" who is dashing though at the same time, charming as he meets his match with headstrong, Georgie Gail.
"Love on the Line" is very original and fun at the same time and this is not a "girly" book, but a solid read, that is both smart and very endearing and, if you're like me, find it so hard to put down and have to keep reading till the end.
I'm normally not a big fan of romance novels, so with "Love on the Line", instead I find a very smartly written book that has the element of romance, that is sweet and endearing, yet at the same time, the characters are strong in their own right and hold out as characters, on their own, that you will find yourself just growing close with and silently cheering out when you realize, "Wait..this has romance in it too".
What I really enjoyed as well about,"Love on the Line" is that Georgie Gail is not a helpless damsel in distress; She is a strong, well rounded character who can hold her own but at the same time, not afraid to let her femininity show through, and even though she proves she can hold her own in a man's world, at the same time, allows herself to be vulnerable and open when love finds her heart.
Deeanne Gist, perfectly writes a story that you will find yourself recommending to friends to read, placing it in your purse or backpack to bring on vacation, or if you have a Nook or Kindle, downloading it to read, while the fire is going or by the pool in the summertime.
Either way, "Love on the Line" left me feeling, for a historical fiction, it captured the time period wonderfully and had enough romance, for the romantic in me to indulge in a little, "That is so sweet".
Ms. Gist, really brings the characters to life and writes the story in such detail that its not overwhelming, but helps the reader, just have a mental image of what they think the characters are thinking, feeling and must look that I fear if a movie was made, I could only hope it would match up to how delightful the book, itself is.
With the holidays around the corner, and you're looking for a book to take with you on vacation, or just to read while warming up by the fire, drop by Georgie Gail's, small hometown, and discover,"Love on the Line".

A contemporary fiction, "Sunrise on the Battery" is a good book for those who are not into historical fictions, but find themselves more oriented toward more modern day stories of balancing life in today's world and learning about what God desires for us.

At 283 pages, readers will discover, not a historical romance, but a wonderful, historical fiction, based in a time when trains have become a method of travel in the States and more homes were beginning to use a telephone, while telegrams were a form of finding out information of what was happening across the world, but for Margaret Lenora, none of these will answer the questions she had about herself, her family, and even her faith, on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, when she discovers, the secret she was adopted.
Lena Nelson Dooley, weaves a wonderful tale of family and love and self-identity, set against the background of a still young country, and filled with historical based tidbits, that will delight readers of historical fiction.
Margaret Lenora Caine, is a strong and lovable character, and even with the mini-backstories that happen in the backgrounds, the reader will not find themselves distracted from the overall reading, as they follow Margaret Lenora Caine as she travels to Arkansas to learn more about who she is and her place in the whole scheme of things.
Personally, I was ecstatic to know that there is a second book coming in May 2012, for the series, though right now May seems too far away and I want to know more about what happens to Margaret and answers to some of the questions that the reader are left alluded to, but this is what makes this book a great read, for those who are looking for a historical fiction that will sweep the reader away.
The story has strong characters, a firm story that doesn't run into rabbit trails, characters that will sweep the reader away, and if you are like me, you'll find yourself unable to put the book down and wishing instead, that the author, would have just continue writing more about Margaret, instead of leaving you hanging for more.
This both creates a book, that will have you waiting, impatiently for the next book in the series, having to re-read the book just to get your fill again of Margaret Lenora Caine and hoping for more glimpses of this delightful read,be it vacation, you're on a holiday, or need a book that will warm your heart and leave you still wanting more.
So if you are looking for a book that will sweep you off your feet and finding yourself reaching the shelf to re-read again, I strongly suggest you try out,"Maggie's Journey" by Lena Nelson Dooley.

For many, worry, seems to be our first nature; No matter what happens, that is the first thing we do, before finding out if there was something to even worry about and with, Linda Mintle's, "Letting Go of Worry", the reader is introduced to biblical based ways to stop worrying, really, stop worrying, and find ways to work through the issues that weigh heavily on our minds.
Like many good books that recognize that not all things are easily, "self-fix", Linda does remind that,"If you feel you have excessive worry or worry to the point that it interferes with your everyday living, consider seeing a mental-health therapist trained in treating anxiety disorders. An evaluation can help determine if your worry has become anxiety. Anxiety disorders are treatable. There is help."
"Letting God of Worry" are for the issues that are manageable on one's own and unlike anxiety disorders, that really, needs the guidance and help of a trained professional, there are steps for everyday worrying that with work and prayer, can be worked through and the individual can learn how to manage.
What Linda Mintle covers are things such as: the spiritual roots of worry · what to do when anxious thoughts arise · how to have peace about their health, job, money, and relationships · practical ways to cultivate a truly worry-free life · the biblical secret to lasting contentment
This isn't a cure all....We are going to still have times in our lives when we are going to worry about something and who doesn't, but we also have to find ways to make worry manageable where it doesn't overtake our lives and control us.
"Letting Go of Worry" is one book to read and learn how, instead of letting worry control you, you control worry. (less)

Off hand, the title may seem misleading and even questionable, but reading the book, this is a rich, scriptural filled look into how churches today are losing track from their Acts counterparts.
Filled with provocative anecdotes that anyone whose experienced a cold church can relate to, "Zombie Church" isn't a judgmental writing, or even cynical look at Christians and the church, but instead, an eye opening, heartfelt look at how the church of the 21st century is losing its way.
From sharing about a church that whittle down to nine members that didn't seem to really care about their church, other than the fact that it was a church that they had always gone to, to churches that you and I have no doubt experienced at some point or time, "Zombie Church" will open the eyes of the state of churches today.
In an example that is shared,Tyler Edwards writes,"When a church stops making a difference in its community, then it's probably drifting away from the Holy Spirit".
He writes earlier in the book,"When the church neglects the commission of Jesus-stops ministering to the poor and the hurting and stops sharing the love of God with others-then it stops living. It just exists and keeps on existing. Undead. How can a church offer the eternal life of God if it does not have life in its midst".
This is such an eye opening, humbling book to read and yet its not ugly or being condescending; It presents a radical but entertaining and also strives to share what is missing in today's churches and how in the process, the church may not so much as dying, but neither is it living either.
Throughout the book, I found myself, post it notes in hand and a highlighter, marking spots to re-read or to share and even quote from and other's to highlight to go back, mull over some more and reflect at the honesty that Tyler Edwards is sharing from not only just a pastor's perspective, but a follower of Christ, perspective on, what seems to be an unspoken issue with the church.
Its not an easy thing to discuss about, but it is something that we need to talk about and Tyler Edwards does in an eye catching way that definitely does what it intends....draw attention, creates discussion, and causes the reader, to go...what does zombies have to do with church, only to discover, in often humbling way, what "Zombie Church" seeks to convey to the reader.
It's honest, its thought provoking, it tongue in the cheek, commends a second look, its blunt where it needs to be blunt, but in a refreshing loving way that needs to be addressed and not pushed under the rug, "Zombie Church" just revitalizes how we view not just going to church, but how we can be more living, active members of the church body and from within reach out to the community as well.
I truly enjoy reading this book and felt that Tyler Edwards, wonderfully addressed even the issues that many of us may have at one time or another, but was too afraid or intimidated to share with others such as the part about having those days , where we wake up on a Sunday morning and just wanted to stay home.
Don't get the statement wrong, "Zombie Church" isn't discouraging going to church, but it is asking and hitting in both wit and keen observation, why do so many churches seem to have trouble either growing, keeping their members or having that often huge disconnect with their local communities.
I love hearing from a pastor say so honestly, "There are Zombie churches, and many of us have been burned by them." Sadly that is true for many, who find themselves going to church, craving, wanting that relationship with Christ, but in the words of Brennan Manning of Newsboys,“The single greatest cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, then walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable”
For those who are truly wanting to know and grow and have a mature, loving relationships, its often not Christ himself, but those around them, that makes it difficult to find that much needed fellowship and with,"Zombie Church", many of the weaknesses and symptoms of a "Zombie Church" is both explored along with biblical based cures to dealing with a,"Zombie Church".
As Tyler Edwards shared, wisely,"But that's not an acceptable reason to walk away from the church altogether. To do so is to disobey the word of God." as outlined in John 14:15,24).
Instead, you will find the symptoms, but also strong encouragement of not only how to find a living church filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit, but also tips of discouraging a "Zombie Church".
We are reminded that neglecting church, we risk falling into the sins of our past, and not growing ourselves, but becoming members of the, "Living Dead" ourselves, and a wise observation that stopping church, leads not to growth, but a slide into sin.
So, the solution?
Awaken the slumbering church.
....and well...you have to read the book, yourself to find out more how that is done, but reading, "Zombie Church:Breathing Life Back into the Body of Christ", the reader will find out that there is always hope and it is so well worth it that I would recommend it to the people who were burnt by church, those who find themselves faced with a "Zombie Church" and this is a great book to help not only encourage but keep in minds ways to avoid becoming a "Zombie Church".
It's worth the time and I so recommend keeping some post it notes and a highlighter, and maybe a pen on hand....you'll find yourself nodding in agreement, finding a little bit of yourself or maybe a personal experience that you can relate to in, "Zombie Church", but more than anything, a reminder to us all...what we, as a body and as members and as brothers and sisters, need to remember, to avoid and to discourage in the church.

Lisa Troyer, explores helping women address their heart needs in an ever changing world.
Everybody wants to belong somewhere.
Everybody wants to feel accepted and Lisa Troyer, explores in "A Place to Belong" how as women we need to step out in faith, trusting God and His guidance and growth and move beyond the strongholds that may keep us from growing as Christians, mothers, daughters, wives and women.
We live in a world of quick fixes, everyone seems to have answers that conflicts with each other, temporary solutions, just either don't think or about, or talk about the things that are heavy on our minds, but often without a clear direction.
"A Place to Belong" is for those who even as an adult, find it hard, due to difficult pasts, bad choices, feeling social awkward, present situations, whatever is the case and to encourage women to move beyond being stuck always in the past, but to move forward, find those special relationships to grow and just not feel like there isn't a place that as a woman, as an individual, that they don't belong and in the process...potential miss in what God has laid out for them.
It seems that as women, we are pressured to be perfect when deep down we don't feel like we are perfect or assume that the person next to us, must have it all together so something must be wrong with us, but in Lisa Troyer's "A Place to Belong", its a reminder that in God's arms...we each have a place that we do belong and can belong and its just a matter of trusting Him, growing in and through Him and allowing Him to do what He needs to do in our lives.
This is a great book to share with those who you might feel need that little extra encouragement and reminder that they do matter.(less)

Set in Texas, and inter-spaced with tales of one of the characters experiences, growing up in revolutionary China, the reader is brought into the lives of two very different set of families, that are united through a common love and concern for Lily, the adopted daughter of Gloria and Andrew.
If I could rate,"Reclaiming Lily" with tissue boxes, I would have to say, you would need three tissue boxes (for good measure) prior to starting this book; Covering themes of adoption, family, what is family, mother-daughter relationships, faith, finding hope, and bridging cultural divides, one would think...how could an author manage to cover all that, but Patti Lacy is able to do that and more with, "Reclaiming Lily".
By the time, I was finished with the book, I was bawling with tears of sadness and joy at the tightly woven story of two families, in two different countries, tightly woven in one girl, and the often complicated relationships and understandings that are prevalent with adoptions.
Patti Lacy, brilliantly, weaves a tale of two different cultures and presents to the reader, strong characters, that by the end of the book, you will find yourself captivated and unable to let go of the book, even knowing you're at the end.
Normally, when writing about very strong characters, it seems difficult to balance, the many stories going on, but "Reclaiming Lily" is an amazingly strong book, that draws the readers in and before you know it, you are lost within the characters that are incredibly fleshed out, with rich, complicated backgrounds and present day struggles.
There are no confusions of where the story going, there is not finding oneself on rabbit trails, instead, there is a feeling, of, "I have to know more, don't stop, not here, go on".
Patti Lacy, presents real people, with real issues, and real emotions, that one would find in an often complicated situation of different values, beliefs and cultures and weaves together, seamlessly, a story of growth, understanding, and eye opening faith that just left me breathless with each page.
What words can describe how as much I would like to share this book with others, this is one of those rare gems, I hesitate to give out,for fear of not getting it back, but yet find myself, going, "You HAVE to read this book; It's not just amazing, but just will take your breathe away".
If you are seeking a story about the power of love, hope and what is family, I highly recommend to read, "Reclaiming Lily".
