HavJonny Valentine (or rather, Jonathan Valentino) is two months shy of twelve. However, unlike most 11 year olds, Jonny is a teen singing sensation. Having gotten his start on YouTube, Jonny is now touring the country with his mom and manager Jane, his bodyguard Walter, and his vocal coach Rog.
Jonny's days are a whirlwind of practice, meet and greets, shows, and video games. His diet is strictly monitored, his clothes picked out for him, and his main companion is his mother, who lives through him.
The Love Song of Jonny Valentine is a scathing portrayal of the music industry seen through the eyes of an eleven year old. Jonny understands that you don't pick a pretty girl from the crowd, because the fat ones will get jealous, and that interviews are full of lies and deception.
Due to his age, the need to transition from a "tween" star to a "teen" star is paramount. Will he become more like Tyler Beats, the current teen heartthrob or will Jonny choose to give it all up and have a normal life? ...more

Blue Asylum is the story of Iris Dunleavy. Set in the Civil War, Iris is sent to a mental institution to cure her after being convicted of being a lunatic. Instead of prison, her wealthy plantation husband has sent her to Sanibel Island to Dr. Cowell to be turned into a reasonable woman once again.
Iris arrives on the island intent on being released once someone understands the situation. She is not crazy. She has been placed there by husband after she disgraced him by attempting to flee the plantation with slaves.
Iris must convince Dr. Cowell, a leading "expert" on women's maladies, that she is sane. His son, Wendell, is drawn to Iris and her claim of sanity. Ambrose, a former soldier battling PTSD, becomes a companion for Iris, and they fall in love.
Iris must plan her escape or die on the island. Will she succeed?

The stories have some aspect of food in them, either characters prepping or sharing a meal. Despite their short story status, the main characters are sketched deftly, and you have a birds eye view into their thoughts and world. Marital, familial, and friendship bonds are strained and tested. I'm not a big fan of short stories, but this collection spoke to me. My one complaint is that the last story was quite heavy to end the collection. This is perfect for a literary fix during lunch or if you do not have much time for reading.
This collection was a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller prize, which is Canada's most distinguished literary prize for a Canadian novel or short story collection published in English. It was established in 1994 by Toronto businessman Jack Rabinovich in honor of his late wife, Doris Giller.

They express their thoughts and feeling freely, revealing who is "the Magic Man" and how "Barracuda" got it's riff. Friends and fellow Heart members get a chance to share their opinions as well.
Seen as front runners of Women In Rock, the Wilson sisters are a formidable duo who weren't satisfied with being back up or not having any say in a band. In an era where women who were in a band were also expected to clean and cook FOR their band, the sisters find a way to be on equal terms.
The story of Heart, it's lyrics, and their life history made this an interesting read. I will now listen more closely to the lyrics the Wilson sisters wrote and appreciate their courage and determination to be the best in the biz.

Ever since his lovely wife Bee died, people have been trying to set him up with available women. Even his step children have taken out a personal ad in The New York Review of Books. What they don't know is that Bee predicted all along that once she was gone, he would be seen as an attractive, "available" man.
Edward is content with his work, his hobbies, and his bird watching. He doesn't want to be an "available" man. He reluctantly joins the dating world, which he finds has changed completely. Can he maneuver in this brave new world?
"An Available Man" is a beautiful story of love, loss, and rediscovery. In this charming book, Wolitzer creates unforgettable characters that speak to your heart.
