I loved it more than I ever thought I would! For a book challenge, I chose this book from a list of my VBFF's top 10 favorite reads for 2011, and I am sooooo glad I did!! Thank you, Big N, for taking the leap last year, and highly recommending it to me! :)
While I am not completely new to BDSM, most of what I have read involves just the B/D/S. Until Beyond Eden, I had not read any Slave/Master themed books, so I was a bit nervous heading into this, especially as I already had the preconceived notion that I would not like the S/M since I could never, myself, submit in such a way. That said, the S/M portions of this book were pretty tough. It broke my heart to see Danny completely enslave Paul, and even though it was done privately, humiliate him. What I failed to recognize right away, is that that is what Paul needed. It is what he craved. And Danny did it to protect Paul from other Masters who might truly, truly physically hurt Paul instead of just providing him with what he needed. And while it was hard to see it at first, he did it because Danny truly loved Paul.
Eve, Paul, and Danny were the best of friends all through their school years, and as they got older, Eve and Paul became a couple. All three of them loved each other very much, more than some of them even knew. After graduation, though, Eve decided to leave Florida and head to New York to pursue her dream of college and becoming an artist. She wanted Paul to come with her, but due to his familial ties, he chose to stay. Ten years later, Eve has returned to Florida and runs into Danny in the store, who invites her over for dinner. Due to a secret life that Danny and Paul have formed (see S/M bit above), Danny and Paul are living together. Breaking a bit of Evie's heart, she finds out that Paul is engaged to be married. So before long, Danny and Eve are dating, and doing many other hot things, and Danny decides to introduce Evie into his life of being a Master. This part, too, was quite tough. I could never, ever have done what Evie did, listening to all of Danny's commands, at the risk of feeling disrespected and humiliated, but at the same time, I am so glad she did, because OMG, if she hadn't, none of what transpired would have (and thank goodness it did!). PHEW!!
Well, not to give the whole book away, and write one in place of a review, before long, Paul and Evie are both wrapped up into the web Danny was weaving, and not too long after that, they are living a loving, sexy, and very beautifully hot relationship that equally involves all three of them. What lies looming ahead of them, however, is Paul's impending wedding, to a woman he doesn't love, and for reasons that have nothing to do with love either. What results are a lot of tears, heartache, but also, lots and lots of love.
Once I started this book, I could not put it down. It was tough, it was poignant, it was heartbreaking, it was sexy, it was edgy, and it was just beautiful. I am sure that this book would not be for everyone, but I cannot recommend it nearly enough. You want a beautiful, sexy, and emotional rollercoaster ride? This is your book!(less)

Dawn of Darkness is set in a post-apocalyptic time, where vampires and werewolves are abound and to be feared. Or are they? Vampires are to blame for the apocalypse, and surviving humans have created a city in which they can live free of the dangers posed by these paranormal creatures. Some of them, however, have special powers. Think X-Men-like qualities. They have joined the army to keep their city and livelihood safe and free of more disaster. Two of these graduating cadets, Mik and Ash, are roommates and have become best friends. After a night of drinking, the relationship moves to the next level, and friends become lovers. It is very sweet how much they care about each other from the get-go, and to see them not be afraid to accept each other and their new found relationship with ease.
But then something happens, and Mik is no longer a part of the city or the army. Most of the remainder of the book is Mik trying to find his way back, with the help of his new friends.
All in all, I loved the paranormal/urban fantasy elements mixed with that of m/m loving. For those leary of m/m romance, the latter is not overbearing, but just very, very sweet.
I highly recommend this book to all PNR/UF lovers, and with the way that this ended, #2 cannot come quick enough!!(less)

I really, really enjoyed this first installment in the series! It is a neat and fantastic world that Briggs created, and I find the whole werewolves theme very sexy even though there was almost no romance and no sex involved in the story at all.
Mercy is a kick-ass heroine. I love the powers she beholds as a coyote, but I also love that she is not perfect, has feminine tendencies, even as an auto mechanic, and that she is unsure of herself sometimes. She has the perfect mix going on as a heroine.
I am already in love with Adam, too. Looking forward to watching more of that relationship blossom, and I do look forward to reading the rest of this series.
The side characters in that we were introduced to are fabulous as well. Love both Warren and Kyle (hope to see more of them!), Jesse is GREAT...love a sassy, snarky teenage girl, Zee is very interesting, I love Bran's fatherly type, and I hope to learn more about Stefan as well. Oh, and Sam is a great character, too. It'll be interesting to see his character develop more in the books to come (if we get to, that is).
