I have read two series bij McIntosh before this one, and I bought the complete Pecheron series without reading this first book (which was kinda tricky because I loved the Quickening series but I hated the Trinity series). But it turns out: it’s ok, because I liked it and I read the book in two days. It has a lot of interesting characters who are more than meets the eye and the settings works for this story. However, I constantly had the feeling the entire book was an epilogue. The persons are set in place, the good and the bad take a stance and… the real story will begin in the second book. It’s lucky I already have the second book on the shelve, but I think the actions could have been better (and maybe less horrible at some points, I mean, the elephants were a bit much). The two main problems were the story and the characters it contained. The biggest problem with the story was the predictability of it. It was too easy. The first book was promising, the second book a big disappointment but this third book seem to look up, starting with a nice predicament. Unfortunately it became easy again. There was never a moment I got excited or curious because it was pretty obvious what would happen next. And then there were a couple of people who died, without any use for the story. And that brings me with my second problem: the characters. I kept despising them from the second book on. The main characters were all very self-absorbed and they were the good guys! It was hard to feel for them and when a couple of them died I couldn’t care less. The only person in the books I cared for was Boaz. I felt really sorry for him and I think that if all the other persons wouldn’t have been that busy with themselves he could have been a great guy.
So in the end I rated this book between “it was ok” and “I liked it”. This is because this 3rd installment was better than the second. Overall the series had a lot of promising moments but couldn’t quit deliver. And that did surprised me because I really liked the Quickening series and expected something of the same level. ...more

I give it 4,5 stars. I have this book for a while but for some reason I hadn’t started it. I did buy the second and third book in this series, but I still hadn’t started this one. I did so yesterday and now I could really hit myself with something because: Why hadn’t I read this one yet? I think it’s a great story, simple and complicated at the same time with lots of great characters who don’t show their true minds. There is a lot of intrigue, which I loved, several layers deep. At some point I had to put it aside (I have been reading nonstop today) because I didn’t want it to end. So a wonderful book and now I’m totally happy I have Canticle and Antiphon waiting nearby. Yay! ...more
