Schmidt used a lot of detail in this language rather than illustrations to show vivid pictures throughout the story. The front cover doesn't really show a whole lot about the book. It appears to be two people carrying on a conversation, possibly an argument. This book was different than most of the others ones we have read because the only focus is on the literature. The Jr. High level of reading lets the author focus a lot on the details and not have to worry about the reader not being able to understand the concepts. The author uses a familiar connection to readers, especially since the majority of the book takes place at school. To even more connect, the author chooses a main character that doesn't love school and has social and family problems. The interesting effect of this story is the underlying idea and tension that you are also faced with by just knowing the time period, because the Vietnam War is also going on. I thought that the author did a good job of showing the true trials and tribulations that a jr. high child might go through, but by also adding some moments that you just have to laugh.
Used in the classroom as an independent read. I would also include group discussions and discussion questions.
