It gets very dull in places, and the exciting parts aren't heart-racing parts. I love the setting, the characters, the little surprises here and there. It was a good read, the negatives and positives really pretty much leveling out to the point of more good than bad. And I do want to read the next book in the series.I enjoy the world she has created. I mistaken it wouldn't rain quite so much.(less)

But once I did, I enjoyed it so much I didn't want to put it down. The story is interesting, the characters well thought out, showing depth in even the secondary characters. The environment is almost haunting. In my mind, I see it all like there is a haze, constant fog, everything faded, near sepia toned. It's beautiful.
The 'love triangle' is predictable and annoying. I like both boys, though one needs to get over himself. I am rooting for the nice guy this time.
The bad guy was a shock to me. The head bad guy, not so much. I had my suspicions about him from get-go.

I actually started feeling more of a connection with the characters, the writing style was so much better as well. There was a story to this one. Well, more of one, the emotion was a little more, where I may not have felt what the characters felt, but I understood they were feeling and knew what emotion was there.
Some things I like about this book: - She has an ability that has consequences. The consequences are horrible, I won't say what they are, I don't want to ruin it. But I am tired of most books out there giving these amazing gifts to the character, and then saying there is consequences, but they are so minor they might as well not exist. Young Adult books try to be happily ever afters, but this book is reality. Hard things. Not getting something for nothing. It sucks, but it's honest, in a supernatural way.
- There is no love triangle. Love triangles are so overdone it has become a cliche. This has a relationship. One that requires work. With upsets and disappointments, a little angst, fights and make-ups. It's a relationship that shows work, not a typical lovey-dovey, sappy story. Not choosing between a bad guy and a good one. It's about finding that someone, falling, and making a decision to make it work. It's real. Not a fairy-tale.
- It is honest. There is the horrible parents, the fair-weather friends. Every action having a reaction, equal or not. There are drugs, alcohol, sex. Nothing too detailed for a YA book. It is life. That is all a part of it. It's real.
- A strong female. She may love a man, but he doesn't control her. He doesn't dictate one thing for her. He wants her to be safe, she refuses. She tries to explain why. What she needs. There is communication. Not a million missed opportunities. There is giving up, showing there comes a point when you have to try to move on. Yet being able to forgive. To make up. To move on in a different way.
Things I didn't like: - There is still not enough detail. I don't see the story playing out at all times. It feels like chunks are missing. Some spots are great. Others terrible.
- The writing is inconsistent. The author writes a great section, then loses the magic on another.
- The little random insights into someone other than the main character totally threw me off a few times.
Overall I enjoyed this. The story deserved four stars. The writing knocked it down to three. I'm feeling that emotional block, but not so much. I am thinking it will be mostly eliminated in the third book of the trilogy. The emotion getting stronger as Janie begins to really feel more of the emotion. I'll be starting on the third book right away.(less)

I didn't want to let it go. There is so much pure emotion in this book. Cynthia Hand is an amazing writer. I don't know how many books there will be in this series. I haven't looked up anything, yet. But it feels like it is really just beginning. It feels like anything I say would be a spoiler, so I will only say how it made me feel. It made me feel . That is rare in itself. I felt like I was with her every second. I felt happy, filled with joy, my heart broke when hers did. It's almost too much. It's a good story, (view spoiler)[ the inevitability of death was about crushing me in this book. (hide spoiler)] the first book had a lot more action, but this one was still better. In the Unearthly I felt embarrassed for her, the carrot colored hair, the noticeable stalking of Christian. I wanted her to give Tucker a chance. And she did. But, just like Clara,I am torn throughout Hallowed. Should visions of destiny really be the reason to give up what you love? To sacrifice someone you love? (view spoiler)[ and why couldn't Jeffery just tell her his purpose? If she had known, most of it wouldn't happen! (hide spoiler)] I am with her, feeling like it is too much. She is seventeen, isn't she too young to be making all these decisions, with one heartbreak after another? One wrenching painful decision after another? I loved this book. Some might call it a light read, but for me it wasn't. It was packed full of emotion, how can anyone call that light?(less)

Every word held my attention. Every action Made got some sort of reaction from me. This was an amazing book. I would love to leave a long glowing review, but to be honest, I am too interested in starting the second book of the series. Love this. The only reason it received four stars instead of five is because the coincidences in this book add up to nothing so far. I am sure there is an answer later, and I can't wait to find it, but I'm the meantime, there are far too many questions and far too little answers.(less)
