The final arc of this horror/noir masterpiece from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. This covered the last 3 arcs of this mysterious tale. The first part is about the past women who were chosen by the deranged god and how they carried the burden in their own eras. The second arc is about Jo's brief entanglement with amnesia and a one-hit-wonder band, desperate to regain fame. And finally, Jo's final attempt to end this whole shenanigans about immortality, manipulations, and death. She showed that the truth is not the only truth out there. She found a hole in the loop, but they had to pay a huge price.
I really loved this and how they made the stereotypical noir damsel-in-distress character and made her a badass heroine, capable of the same suave and cool moves as other 50's style heroes. I must look for the other works by Brubaker. Hope he churns out more good ones!...more

The final volume of Bendis’ run on this epic series, which also includes Uncanny X-Men #600, the last issue on the X-title. This is a collection of stories about the gang after Cyclops disbanded his mutant school. They went their separate ways. Emma Frost left to get back to the Hellfire Club, Magik went on to continue mutant recruiting with Shadow Cat, the kids went off to start the Hero Squad, and Cyclops took off with his brother to continue the mutant revolution. Times are changing fast and Cyclops needs to show the true meaning of the revolution to the world one last time. Tensions grow thicker with, a technically rogue, Cyclops once again addressing the discrimination and violence towards mutants. Something that we could learn from with our own society’s prejudices.

The final volume to Matt Kindt’s mental series (see what I did there?). The war has come between Meru and the Eraser, with their respective side all set up. Meru made one last attempt at gathering other former Mind Mgmt agents then set out an all-out attack on the new Management building. Imagine a war with psychics and mentalists, and it is just as awesome, if not more. A fitting ending, with some emotional thugs, to a wonderful epic. Can’t wait for Matt Kindt’s next project!...more

It took me 5 fuckin' days to finish the whole Big Damn Sin City! And she was beautiful. Gorgeous. Lovely. The type of gal that would never even give a guy like me a single thought. The piece of work you couldn’t help but admire. She’s really something. She’ll show you down-on-their-luck guys, like Marv, Hartigan, or Dwayne, with their troubles in the city. She’ll also give you lovely, yet sharp, dames like Gail, Ava, Miho (sweet little Miho), and the rest of the Old Town gals. All of their lives, problems, and desires all rooted deep in this Sin City. One thing though, about these characters, you shouldn’t mess with them. They would happily shred you to pieces, and throw you out like a used condom into the dank and sticky sewers. So, be careful as you thread through cool and calm alleys of Sin city, since trouble seems to come up at every corner.
And maybe just maybe, Miho (deadly little Miho), might be looking for someone to play with tonight....more
Through the Woods!!! This is a collection of 5 horror stories by Emily Carroll, Our Neighbor's House, Lady's Hands are Cold, His Face All Red, My FrieThrough the Woods!!! This is a collection of 5 horror stories by Emily Carroll, Our Neighbor's House, Lady's Hands are Cold, His Face All Red, My Friend Janna, and The Nesting Place. I became interested in this when I read His Face All Red online, and was just impressed with the story telling and artwork. The stories are really creepy without going over the top (though The Nesting Place reminded me of Junji Ito's works).
Our Neighbor's House was about 3 daughters who just lost their father, and were arguing if they should brave the harsh woodland winter to relocate to their nearest neighbor. Lady's Hands are Cold is a bout a young lady who hears a woman singing within the walls of the mansion of her newly married lord. His Face All Red is about the jealousy between brothers, and a monster killing off the town's livestock. My Friend Janna is about 2 scheming friends, doing spiritual medium stints, when one of them suddenly sees a ghost. The Nesting Place is about the childhood stories you were told about, suddenly becoming true.
You'll feel a subtle uneasiness with the stories, which I really like. Honestly, some of the stories could have been better if they were longer, but I guess this is because these were originally intended for online releases. Nevertheless, this is a good book, and I would certainly look for her other works!...more

This covers the Season of Mists and A Game of You arcs, with some one-shots. The Dream Shaper takes us again on a crazy trip through his duties and circumstances. In Season of the Mists, he became the property broker of Hell, and tried to sell it to the highest (and most deserving) bidder. While in A Game of You, we get back with on one of the Dream Vortex's (from a previous arc) neighbor, and how her dream caught up with her. Oh and we get to see the whole Endless family (minus Destruction), meet up. The mythology goes deeper as we see how the other Endless work, and how they play games with each other.
I really love how the stories are much about other characters as about Morpheus himself. Colorful art, great substance, and mystical characters. What could go wrong?...more

These guys, right? Boomerang, Shocker, Speed Demon, Overdrive, and Beetle. They are the new sinister six! (Yup, all 5 of them.) (Don't ask.) If you thought the Guardians of the Galaxy movies was funny, then this should be adapted to film! (They did make those guys famous, right? Why can't they make these bozos famous too?) Boomerang is now taking the reigns, since he's tired from getting beat up by superheroes like Spider-man or Daredevil, and plans an ultimate heist, of the century. A heist so great, it took 17 issues to do it! But being in the Sinister Six, problems would come up, mostly from the other villains you work with. So what to do? Wing it, and just hope it sticks! Oh, and always look out for number 1!
Just a fun-filled series, with lots of jokes, slapstick humor, backstabbing, and overly convoluted heist plans! When could we have something like this again? ...more

Mark Waid’s last installment for his run on the Man Without Fear! Overall, he maintained a fun run with Murdock, and it played through ‘til the end. Now, with his base of operations in San Francisco, Murdock is enjoying the life of a celebrity lawyer, well more like a superhero lawyer, since his identity was publicly exposed with an autobiography coming out. However, unlike in good ole’ Hell’s Kitchen, Daredevil is still figuring out the underworld in San Francisco. Characters like the Shroud, Owl, and Stunt Master come up quite frequently in the streets, but he was not expecting somebody else moved his base of operation, the Kingpin. However, these guys just seem to be a precursor to Matt’s ultimate struggle in this series. An awesome end to an awesome series. Mark Waid and Chris Samnee did a great work on this. I bet this’ll make another fast selling omnibus someday. Good thing I already have it in deluxe editions.
Hey, the whole creative team from here is now doing Black Widow. Wonder if I should read that? Might try it out. ...more

Just as the first Mark Waid-written Daredevil series in vol.3, this volume contains the reset of the Daredevil franchise, just as he transferred his base of operations to San Francisco! Now, the publicly recognized Matt Mudock/Daredevil is acclimatizing himself with his new surroundings, and new crime movements. Working with the deputy mayor, he's now fighting San Francisco crime, and even caught up with his old enemy, The Owl. Though the law firm's not working out as planned, his partner, Kirsten McDuffie is keeping Matt on check, even Foggy (supposedly dead) jumps in from time-to-time to help out. It's fun to see Daredevil out of Hell's Kitchen, and dropped on the other side of the continent, where apparently, there aren't much tall buildings to swing from....more

After Bruce Wayne's fight with the Joker in the Endgame, Gotham is left to rebuild itself without the familiar caped-crusader. So Power Corp. steps up and creates their own brand of Batman, in the form of Jim Gordon! (minus the mustache) Jim now gets deployed with an armor for heavy hitting, and a batsuit without a cape (Edna Mode would be so proud!). It is clear that Gordon is still figuring things out from this side of crime-fighting work, but he seems to be good at it. He was, after all, a police commissioner. Just as he was starting a villain named Mr. Bloom is handing out superpowers to gang members, making Gotham his garden of superfreaks and creating chaos all over! Honestly, this collection seems kind short, but it is a good set up for the next volume. Can't wait to get that!...more
