This is a must-read for fans of Pern, or if you want to read about Pern. Having read lots more Pern stories over the years, it was great to go back to the beginning, really, and see what I'd forgotten.
Now, the story itself is interesting -- definitive Pern, great adventure, but definitely reflective of the fact that it started life as three short stories put together. Also, though some of the circumstances are more "adult" (nothing graphic, just references), the story is very "YA" in tone and nature. And, of course, it just ends and leaves you drooling for the next book in the series...
My only disappointment in the re-read was in seeing how McCaffrey's characterization was so limited in these stories. I've recently read another of her books and had a similar realization, so I think it may be her writing style that was so startling upon re-reading. For the tale, she's great, but I would have loved to have gotten more into Lessa's head, or seen more emotion... but that was par for the course at the time, and for the author's era.
Definitely a two thumbs up read for the world and the era from whence it came, but readers who have only experienced modern YA and space opera may find the book lacking in some aspects. (Sadly... Pern would be a series I would suggest to any sf reader!)(less)

I loved the humor and the depth of the story. It definitely deserves the kudos it's earned since release. Some may find themselves intimidated by the cast of beauty pageant contestants, but the author quickly separates each girl in the reader's head, and confusion isn't a problem. (Though the scenes jump from one character to another abruptly sometimes.) Definitely recommended for those who like girl-focused YA, and a nice, lighthearted alternative to a lot of the weightier releases I've been looking at lately. (less)

It was active, and romantic, and very visceral. The romance was the best part of course, between a wounded hero and equally wounded heroine, but the fantasy plot, the world building and the characters that Andrews peopled the book with guaranteed it was a speedy, and very enjoyable, read. I liked the first book in this series, and really enjoyed this story, and can't wait to read the next! Oh, if you're a romance reader, or like fantasy with romance, this might be the book for you. And, though having read the first would probably enhance your enjoyment of this story, I don't think it would be strictly necessary for understanding.(less)
