I admit, I was very skeptical about The Scorpio Races, (I wasn't a big fan of Shiver) and possibly would have put off reading it even longer if it wasn't for amazon sending me two free audible credits. I thought, why not give it a go, since it's free!
I have one word for everything The Scorpio Races lead me to feel: MAGICAL.
It was breathtaking, heart-wrenching and lovable.
The audio-book was AMAZING, the music (created by Maggie herself) and the two voice actors who played Puck and Sean were first class. They had all the different voices and the right emotions at the right times aced, which made the experience all the more magical.
Fans of Mercy Falls trilogy will either love or dislike The Scorpio Races; Maggie mentions in her section at the end of the audio book that it is very different from the Mercy Falls trilogy, and doesn't have kissing every second page (her words not mine!).
Well one thing for sure is that all the years of Maggie's hard work and research has paid off, this book is AMAZING, I'm now a fan for life. (You've achieved one thing Maggie! I felt like I was there, and I'm going to be trying to get the salt out of my hair for weeks!)
I loved this book so much that even though I have audio, I'm going to have to go buy a hardcover copy, because I just have to have it! The cover is beautiful and after reading a few reviews I'm interested to see how some things are spelled, since I was hearing the pronunciation of capaill as: 'kapal-ishka' I always wondered why Holly was having a hard time with the pronunciation, but after seeing the spelling, I understand!
I think that reading The Scorpio Races would lead to an all new experience after listening to the audio-book and I'm excited to plunge into world Maggie created all over again.
The island was amazing, the characters were fantastic, the horses were breathtaking - both of land and sea! and especially the bonds that Maggie created, simply bewitching.
Gabe, I just wanted to punch him! In the end I understood him and his reasons, but still wasn't that impressed. Finn was adorable and I want a little brother just like him! (Maggie said she wouldn't be writing anymore books in this world, ever. But I would love to see a book with Finn as the main character, hell actually I wouldn't mind a book featuring Holly either) Holly was a hoot and I loved Steve West's American voice for him! I adored so many characters, and I'll keep listing them all if I continue.
I haven't forgot Puck and Sean either... the slow build up of their relationship was fantastic, no insta-love here! Watching them ever so slowly shift themselves into each others lives and how highly they came to think of the other while thinking so little of themselves, enraptured me. I found myself being tugged along with them at the slow pace, content to let their relationship unravel and not screaming at them to hurry up (which I'm guilty to doing at a lot of books that are either to slow or fast).
Then there was Sean's simple one liners that had so much impact and meaning that managed to not only set Puck's heart a-flutter, but mine also!
And Puck was such a whirlwind against Sean's steady self and seeing them slowly come together is well worth the read, and ooh boy the tension!
I could go on and on about The Scorpio Races, but would probably just end up repeating myself, However this is an absolute must read! If you are one of the skeptical people like I was, read it - you won't regret it!
The Scorpio Races gets a special place in my heart residing amongst my favourites, and gets:
I'm guilty of never reading a Holly Black book or listening to an audio book... until now.
I've been meaning to try an audio book for awhile, because it would be so convenient for when I'm stuck with a massive headache, public transport or even cleaning! I was very happy to receive an e-mail from amazon giving me two free credits to get any two books on audible for free! (Check out their sale of: frightening low prices! Until the end of October - I've bought a few more already!)
Yes, The paperback of White Cat is only about $8.48 in pretty much any online store, but I had to give audio a try, and what better way to do it than listening to a book I've been dying to read since I discovered a few fellow bloggers reading the ARC of Black Heart, the third book in the Curse Workers series.
I love the covers for all three books in this series, and even though I have the first two books in audio, I may just have to grab a copy of the paperbacks also!
So now that I've dived headlong into Holly Black's amazing world and tasted her writing skills, I can't wait to read more, not only her Curse Workers series either, but her other books also!
I must say that at first, listening to the audio made me giggle a lot (especially when Jesse Eisenberg used his mum voice), it was strange getting used to listening instead of reading, but I eventually got used to it and got caught up in the world Holly crrafted (I will say that after listening to the start of The Scorpio Races, I was shocked by the vast difference in talent from the voice actors, but I still enjoyed White Cat nonetheless).
Used to reading books with female heroines, I was happy to read a book with a male as the main character.
Cassel is a fantastic character.
A dark past that he only remembers in chunks, Cassel has no idea what he is capable of and is terrified that he will hurt someone again. Holding people always at an arms length Cassel is determined not to end up in the family business, yet he still contains the thrill for the game...
Holly Black takes us on a thrilling ride into Cassel's mind: watching how he reacts to certain events, gaining friends, that he is shocked that he actually begins to trust; to using his con skills of lying and cheating, all to solve a mystery that has haunted him for the past three years; was an absolute blast!
I fell in love with all the characters, even the bad ones that I wanted to give a good smack! (I especially loved Grandpa and Sam!) The mystery was fantastic and I was sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what Cassel would find out and con next!
White Cat by Holly Black was a gripping read and I recommend to everyone that enjoys a good mystery with a magical twist, don't hesitate to pick this one up! I cannot wait to start Red Glove to see what will happen to Cassel next!
Being stuck in bed for a few days near exam time fighting off migraines isn't the ideal thing in the world, you can't do anything but just worry. But after a few days I remembered that I had a few (more than a few) credits on audible from my membership and decided to take this opportunity to listen to more audio books.
Enchanted was a delight to listen to, at first I wasn't sure if I could handle the narrators perky voice for seven hours, but as the story progressed I couldn't be more delighted, it was the kind of story that needed to be narrated in such a way.
Alethea Kontis did a marvelous job! She spun so many fairy tales that we all know and love and meshed them all together... I had so much fun picking out the different stories!
In a way it made me think a lot of Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine (one of my all time favourites), it was so much fun and although probably more meant for kids, it was just so thrilling that I couldn't stop listening!
Sunday is a seventh daughter of a seventh daughter and doesn't think she is so special... but it turns out that she isn't exactly what she seems. Her sisters are all extraordinary and possess a unique talent gifted to them by their fairy godmother, a spy glass that can see the future, a simple axe to a writing pen.
They live in a tall tower with no door, but then they made a door and it now looks like a shoe. One of her sister's married a prince all because of a pea! and another is now a Pirate Queen traveling the sea's.
Throw in an evil king and fairy godmother, a frog prince, magic beans and a goose that can lay golden eggs and you have one hell of an interesting story, and this is only a small taste of what is yet to come!
The character's were lovely and I would really love to read more about them, especially Saturday! It sounds as if her story was only just beginning at the end of Sunday's and I hope that Alethea decides to write more about this magical world and amazing characters!
Even though Sunday is a seventh daughter of a seventh daughter and in her own right very powerful, some things happened at the end where I was expecting her to do something a bit more meaningful than what actually happened. It wasn't bad in the slightest and I was delighted with the conclusion... I just expected more from her.
I would love to go on, but I'm afraid everything else I would like to mention would all be big spoilers... So I highly recommend that you pick up this book, no matter what age you are and explore it for yourself, you'll be enchanted!
I'll certainly be looking forward to reading more of Alethea's books in the future! (less)
I want to quickly put this in here before I write a review! I really really really really really hope this isn't the end of the Curse Workers series!

I loved these books a lot more than I thought I would. It's an amazing world and although I loved the end, there's soooo much more Holly Black could go with and I would love a little more explanations and what will happen in the future!(less)
