This is a very inspiring book for me as a writer, because I want to write stories that are neither addictive nor boring, i.e. stories that have periods of calm and relaxation (no conflict or tension) amidst sections of great tension and conflict. 三俠五義 does this very well. There are definitely a lot of resting periods in between the exciting action bits. It's a great balance! Perfect for people like me who want to enjoy a good story but at the same time don't want to become addicted to a book that I start neglecting my work and sleep.
As well, I love how this story is very an optimistic one where the good pretty much always prevails against the evil. I've read too many dark and depressing stories where the evil people win and the good people suffer or perish.
Most of the characters seemed to be black-and-white, either all good or all bad, but that's okay because it was still an entertaining read and I liked most of the main cast.
白玉堂 was my favorite character, however, partly because I thought he was the most interesting and complex character. (Not just because he's super hot. XD). I love his name too--it looks and sounds beautiful. He did tick me off sometimes as he can be a bit immature, childish, or unreasonable, and he can be quite cruel (only to evildoers, though); yet, his imperfections also make him more interesting and charming as a character. I read on Baidu that he is "cold", but I disagree. He's actually pretty warm-hearted and hot-headed, quite the opposite of cold and indifferent!
The idea of the 五鼠 is fab too, especially as traditional Chinese culture sees mice as bad and despicable; so this positive view of mice was a welcome change. I love their names (外號) too: 鑽天鼠廬方, 徹地鼠韓彰, 穿山鼠徐慶, 翻江鼠蔣平, 和錦毛鼠白玉堂.
展昭 and 歐陽春 I thought were likable too, but they were not that interesting to me maybe because they were almost perfect people. In general, I don't mind perfect characters, but these two seemed a bit too much on this, haha.
I quite like 蔣平 and how everyone looks down on him at first because he is small, skinny, and looks sickly, but he always proves to be someone with very impressive abilities and smarts. This is a great reprieve from the "unattractive people are bad and beautiful people are good" vibe that I get from the story sometimes. (There are numerous notable exceptions of beautiful evil people and not that beautiful good people in the book too, but the "beautiful is good" stereotype seems to nevertheless stand out in the story.)
艾虎 is also a character I particularly liked; he's perhaps my second favorite character. He's so cute and noble and competent at the same time! I'm not going to spoil it but he has in addition this quite adorable quirk, lol.
趙虎 (愣爺) is really cute and funny too! He is also one of those characters who would not be deemed conventionally attractive, yet he is a good, decent, and very likable guy.
包公 is pretty cool and I like reading about all the cases he solves with his amazing wisdom and perspicacity, but I actually like his servant 包興 more, since I feel the latter has more "personality", if that makes sense. 包興 seems more human and relatable to me too.
Aside from my feelings about the characters, I adore the language as well. It's vivid, charming, evocative, and also rhythmic in a very pleasing way!
I also appreciated how there was very limited setting description (I tend to skip over these when I encounter them in books, because I'm impatient), but at the same time, I never feel that I'm lost in the story.
So the only thing I really disliked about the book, was (view spoiler)[when 白玉堂 was brutally killed and never revived. I mean, why???? I'm still feeling very heartbroken about that. :( (hide spoiler)]
This was a wonderful book overall, especially as I write and read a lot in the wuxia genre, and this book is reputed to be the very first wuxia story in China, so it was a real eye-opener. 三俠五義 also happens to be my favorite pre-1900s Chinese literary classic I read so far!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>...more

Strangely, in the previous book where 傅紅雪 (邊城浪子) appeared, I didn't really like him; but in this book, he's more likable yet surprisingly became less interesting too...I think I was just not as emotionally engaged as I was by the other books. For the other books, it's easier to develop emotional attachments to 李尋歡, 阿飛, 葉開和丁靈琳, but I didn't feel very attached to 傅紅雪...He seems to be a basically decent person, but he really was a lot more intriguing in 邊城浪子 for some reason.
And lol 傅紅雪 suddenly became super smart! I know he's a lot older and more experienced now, but still......more

My fav character who appeared here is still 葉開, and my second favorite 丁靈琳. The only other female character I genuinely liked from 古龍's stories so far, is 溫黛黛 from 大旗英雄傳. I liked 屠嬌嬌 from 絕代雙驕, but she's a villain, haha.
The character development for 丁靈琳 in 九月鷹飛 was immense. She's a lot more complex than she was in 邊城浪子!...more

He has such a hot personality as well as looks. And 溫黛黛 is my favorite female character of 古龍's stories so far (I've only read 大旗英雄傳 and 絕代雙驕 thus far, though.)
The ending is ambiguous, but the greatest likelihood is that 鐵中棠 and 水靈光, and 溫黛黛 and 雲錚 will all get to be alive and well and marry. :D
古龍's stories are the type where there are SOO many coincidences and miracles that it's ridiculous, yet you don't feel mad because they make the story even more entertaining, fun to read, funny, and you're very happy that the characters you love keep being saved by these miracles time and time again that they end up okay in the end and have a happy ending!
There were some plot events that were very predictable, but I didn't mind them because they made me happy. Ha I knew 水靈光 and 鐵中棠 couldn't really be cousins! And I knew someone or something would prevent 水靈光 and 朱藻 from marrying!
And omg that 鐵血大旗門 people would all kill or exile their wives...Crazy and cruel people. It's very cool how 日后 vows that if a 大旗門弟子 is willing to die for his wife, she would go solve this great feud. And it's interesting that the 大旗弟子 who (tries to) kill himself for his "wife" is 日后's own son.
I also find it interesting how people already call themselves husband and wife before actually marrying each other (with a ceremony)...Well I understand 溫黛黛 said she was 雲錚's wife to save her life and solve some problems, but did 日后 know that 溫黛黛 and 雲錚 were not married yet? It was also interesting how 易明 and 鐵青樹 kind of fell in love after such a brief meeting and "married". Don't you love it when people compulsively marry each other to save their lives? Haha. That marrying someone would make you part of your spouse's clan...
盛存孝 is awesome! But I don't get the 彩虹七劍。 They have red 紅鷹劍客易挺, yellow 黃冠劍客錢大河, blue 藍鳳劍客柳棲梧 and purple 紫心劍客盛存孝. Yet there is still green and orange (and I guess another type of purple?) but there's just 碧月劍客孫小嬌, 墨龍劍客龍堅石, and 翠燕劍客易明。碧 and 翠 both look like green, and 墨 is probably black, right? Assuming that there is black in a rainbow, why are there two greens? And why is there no orange?
After reading this great story, I'm looking forward to reading more 古龍's works!...more

And poor 金世遺! frown emoticon I feel bad for 谷之華 and 厲勝男 too, but I feel especially sad for 金世遺． >< Poor guy! He really always tries his best to do the right thing. He's very very unfortunate. This is such an amazingly sad story! Though I can imagine it being even worse than this.
金世遺 and 厲勝男 have such a strange relationship...But I personally wouldn't call it romantic (not sexual either), even though the author and the characters think it is romantic.
Also, I really like 金世遺! grin emoticon Usually I don't really like love polygons where there's one guy and multiple girls, but I like this one since the guy is really awesome and wonderful and I can see why he's so popular, haha. Plus, I like both 谷之華 and 厲勝男, and also 李沁梅 who used to have a sort of crush on him. A love polygon is more acceptable to me also if I like every individual within this polygon.
Apart from that, 梁羽生 writes such fantastic fight scenes! The book seems to be mostly made up of fight scenes, haha, but they are so enjoyable to read and I never get tired of them! Since I'm trying my hand at writing a 武侠小说 myself, his great fight scenes are very inspiring to me too. :D...more
