Dragons are believed to be soul-less creatures and who do not believe in emotions only relational thought. The crown prince first in line for the thrown is discovered to be murdered, his head is missing and that is a classic symbol of a dragon killing. Lucien the nephew of the murdered prince steps in to take over the investigation and find out what exactly happened. Time is of the essence though because the fortieth anniversary of the peace treaty is rapidly approaching and the leader of the dragons will be attending and nothing can go wrong.
Seraphina is a young girl who is the assistant to the music director at court. She has a gift for music that no other possesses. She also has a secret that she believes no other possesses. She aids Lucien in the quest to discover the truth behind the prince's murder. She fears that no one truly understands the dragons and that there may be other unknown factors working against the treaty.
I enjoyed this book very much. It was a newer take on dragons as them being cold and unemotional and if the dragon contained or expressed emotion they were considered to be ill. Seraphina was a strong heroine who though was terrified at times she didn't allow that terror to stop her from doing what she believed was best. Lucien was also another great lead character. By him being a bastard it set a ground layer that Seraphina and he could connect and build upon. These two were great together and I can't wait to see where they go in the future.
For me the side characters were not great. I didn't like the princess Gisselda. I found her annoying and immature, she was suppose to be around Seraphina's age and I feel she was just completely below her in maturity and education. Glisselda acted like the spoiled princess she was.
I found this book to be a little slow at times, but it was overall a very intriguing and interesting story. I will definitely read this series in the future if there are more books. I would also recommend this book to anyone who liked the eragon series.(less)

Caleana is the most deadly assassin in her world. When she was captured and sentenced she faced a life in a deserted salt-mine with all of the other prisoners of war and the worst criminals in her world. The average life-span in this prison is a month, Caleana has lasted a year. It's after this year that the Crown Prince comes to Caleana with an offer. He is shocked by her young age because no one truly knew what she looked like. She was only seventeen when she was captured and sentenced. The Crown Prince offers Caleana a chance at freedom. If she competes in a competition to become the King's hand and wins, than after four years of service she can be free.
Though Caleana despises the King, she agrees to the offer due to the chance of freedom. She rides back to the glass castle and begins to train with the Crown Prince's friend who is also the Head of the Guards. When the competition begins competitors slowly begin dying in horrific accidents. But when Caleana investigates a little she believes that magic, which has been outlawed and everyone with magic killed, is involved. With the warning of someone quite special Caleana see's that she is the only one who can face this challenge to protect the people she cares about, but will an assassin be able to protect others for a change?
I really liked this book and I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series. I loved all of the relationships that Caleana grew to have and I found myself have a sweet spot for Dorian (Crown Prince). I really enjoyed his and Caleana's time together and can't wait to see what happens with them. Caleana was a great tough heroine. She knew exactly who she was a she refused to let people look down upon her. She definitely has some secrets, most especially what happened to her parents and who exactly they were. I have some theories on that but am definitely curious to see if I am correct.
This author created an amazing world that was exciting, dangerous, deceitful, and dramatic. I really loved this book and from what I have heard if you like the Game of Thrones series you would enjoy this book as well. I haven't personally read Game of Thrones but I am interested now that I have heard the comparison to this book.(less)

I truly love the world that Gwen lives in. I think she is an exciting, sarcastic, loyal heroine and I absolutely love reading about her journeys. That being said this book wasn't my favorite in the series.
In this book Gwen's mission is to save a close friend from a poisonous death. Reaper's tried to poison Gwen but instead poisoned someone close to Gwen, and Gwen being Gwen feels responsible and will do whatever it takes to save this person's life. That means traveling to another Academy that is a hike away from a mysterious and rare plant that is said to be able to cure this poison. Getting the plant won't be the most dangerous part about traveling to this new Academy, surviving the Reapers that are most assuredly waiting at the end of this elaborate trap is.
During the book we get a look into Gwen's father and his side of the family which was previously unknown. That was definitely exciting and I hope we get to see more of that side of the family. I also really liked how things ended between Logan and Gwen, I wished it would have been discussed a little more but overall happy to see where that relationship will go in the future.
I felt like this was kind of a filler or transitional book. There were many plot points that were introduced in this book that I can definitely see being used later in the series, but overall it kind of just gave us more questions. I definitely would have liked to see more the of the side characters I feel like they only got a little bit of spotlight in this book, and I would like to hear more about them and their journeys and how they intersect with what Gwen knows about the upcoming battle.
I will continue with this series without a doubt, but I did feel like this book could have done a lot more, and wasn't as exciting as the rest of the series. That is not to say that it was bad by any means because I still did like and enjoy the book I just have high hopes that the next book will be a bit more exciting like previous books. (less)

I honestly kind of felt like I got an unfinished copy or something. It was just so short and a little confusing and VERY abrupt. But other than that I loved this book and liked some of the introduction of new characters. Can't wait for more in this series!(less)

Thus Alex is born. Alexa and her twin brother are taken and put into the army. They are both part of the elite guard that protect the crown prince Damian. Alexa is the best fighter in the entire army, but it is getting harder and harder for her to conceal her true identity.
When an assassination attempt on the prince's life occurs it sets into motion a whole conspiracy that Alexa never saw coming. When the prince asks her to put her trust in him she must decide if the prince who she once believed to be spoiled and ignorant but has recently shown that perhaps she is not the only one concealing her true identity is worthy of her trust. Her entire world is shaken when she starts out on this new journey. Because everything in her kingdom is not what she was led to believe.
I liked Alexa in this book I thought she was an engaging character. I didn't love the love triangle that occurred between the prince and Rylan a friend who has been with Alexa since she joined the army. The triangle was there but it was fairly obvious who she would chose throughout the entire book and I kind of pitied the one she didn't chose.
This author definitely didn't hesitate on killing off many of the characters that are mentioned throughout the book. Some I understood had to have been killed off but some hit me hard and I was sad about. This book dealt with a lot of harsher topics that I wasn't expecting, but I understood that it was all part of the larger plot. I think this was an interesting story and I will see where future books will go. (less)
