I have now read 4 Jumper books, 1 AU novel, and 1 short story. I can honestly tell you this has become my favorite since we're solidly in the geeking out with science and dreaming the "impossible" I don't want to spoil a thing but by the title it should tell you where the story is going. It's so worth it. Cent is again the main protagonist but we get (as usual) get a few chapters from other POVs, even one or two that come completely by surprise but totally make sense. I adore the Rice family they are truly extraordinary. Hmm, somehow extraordinary just seems so pedestrian after this book.
What I really appreciate the most is how Gould's obsession with details always leads to more and more interesting tech and scientific knowledge. I am no engineer but I'd imagine a lot of this book would pass mustard without question and any bits that stretch laws only stretch in the realm of possibility and theory. It's not like it's some new fad either. Even in Reflex there is possible my favorite moment of any book I've ever read where Millie *considers* hacking into a computer and decides to pass on the the whole endeavour knowing there just wasn't enough time.
Honestly I can't keep talking about this book without ruining too much but suffice to say. The Rice family takes things to a new level when Cent tries out her hand with contributing to the world. It's a good time all around. Honest. If you're a fan you will feel very at home. Suffice to say this isn't the first time (nor I suspect the last) where you'll really be sad you don't possess their ability yourself.

I loved so many parts of it and then despised the little bits with all of the religious undertones. This book would've been incredible had OSC not tried to accomplish the impossible and convert us all. In hindsight this got very long winded and I got rather upset while writing. I don't blame you if you bail. Frankly I'm bailing right now because it's been almost 2 hours and I'm just getting more and more upset. I'm mad because life is hard enough and forcing your characters through your religious beliefs even when it's unbelievable and not feasible is a waste of both (you the author and us the reader) our time. Becuase it takes into account most of the other books that have been published up until now I just decided to spoiler tag it and if you are so brave... bold... stupid :P I invite you to open up a dialog. I'm actually very curious to see what you think. Assuming to you can follow my late night ranting that is.. and for that I apologize. Love this world. Hate how ridiculous it makes the characters seem because the author was scared. (view spoiler)[Seriously think about what we know from all the books he's published so far. You mean to tell me that (we'll stick with Ender first) a teenage boy, three thousand years old (yes yes go with it), is able to overcome his extra hormone induced overly charged libido and be completely celibate until he lands on Lusitania and BOOM finds his soul mate and then they have sex like horn dogs until she rejects him?
Let's go back and look at his relationship with Petra. The only female in the jeesh. The first one to look out for him. Whether he knew that she did this with all the original outsiders of each launchie group at first or not she still was the first to look out for him. He pushes her so hard that she cracks under the pressure and now OSC spends the rest of the series trying to make up for it by calling her the best of them all and making her in itself almost godlike within the battle schoolers that were allowed back on earth. We'll ignore Virlomi for now even though the whole goddess business almost had me stop reading the book. The only thing that kept me going was that I knew Virlomi makes it out and she at least seems to be repentant of her actions on Earth.. Ok back to Petra. Ender loved her and since it wouldn't be possible for him to leave into deep space with her OSC gimps her with "shame" and they never get to speak to each other ever again? Super lame. You don't believe me? Keep reading. Even in the letters emails Valentine and Peter exchange by the end of this book there's only the cursory "Petra sends her love to Ender" Ugh.
Next up, Alessandra. That girl was completely who becomes completely in charge of her sexuality. Even Ender stated he didn't find her... unattractive but no. Not once does this teenage due make a move? Oh wait there was the one kiss. Only a chaste kiss. Yeah cause while I'm on a starship hurtling toward where at almost light speed I'm really considering my virtues and holding on tightly to my chastity. Not seeing the broad strokes not so masterfully disguised yet? Alright...
Jane. Oh lord this one hurts even me. Jane is perfect. They both love each other dearly. The only reason that doesn't work out is cause at the time Jane didn't have a real body. I'm going to take a moment and say right here. Ender definitely took a moment or two to store quite a few fond memories of Jane (or the idea of...) for his spank bank (excuse me for my crassness but it's true) and OSC doesn't even try and pretend it didn't happen. He just skirts right past it. He does the same thing with Miro too. In fact Miro has Valentine (old and young) AND Jane in the bank and he is just plain greedy about it. In fact maybe OSC didn't skirt past it. Having the jewel in their ears was a sign of how serious they were about their predilections. Anyway this paragraph hurts to much. I'd marry Jane if I could. I wouldn't even need her to have a body. She gets to be perfect like that. Also I cry party foul at the idea that she doesn't love. It's obvious how much she loves Ender by what happens when he turned his jewel off.
Up next... Hmm the wonderful wife indeed. Novinha. Let's call her perfect and move on shall we? Hahahaha yeah right. How does anyone explain how this relationship works to anyone in the world of the real? Buh. Anyone half paying attention knows that the only reason this is even attempted is because Novinha eventually runs away and gets wrapped up into the religious arms of?? Ding Ding Ding. Such a waste. After three thousand years if I tried to marry a woman like that I'd hope I had someone who cared enough about me to smack me across the face and call me an idiot.
Alright onto rest of the jeesh. Bean (and thus Petra). Forget that he was a ticking timebomb. He, as soon as he could realize it himself, started making babies, literally and scientifically. Oh but that's right to get in vitro required marriage:
Petra laughed and gave him a little shove. But it wasn't much of a shove. Mostly it was just an excuse to touch him. To prove to herself that he was hers, that she could touch him when she liked, and it was all right. Even with God, since they were legally married now. A necessity before in vitro fertilisation, so that there could be no question about paternity or joint ownership of the embryos. (from Shadow Puppets)
Can we just leave at accepting Bean was just barely entering his teens and he was making babies like it was going out of style. For heavens sake he was serious contributing factor to winning the Formic War. He is the most realistic portray of what a person comes home to after winning a war. I'm not saying he needed to go about whoring.. which does actually happen according to Petra:
The heavier ordnance was being carried on the highway by big Polish and German moving vans, of the kind that plied the highways across Europe all the time, stopping only to eat and pee and visit roadside whores.
Alright so that you don't think I'm being unkind and picking on anyone excessively or unnecessarily... Carn Carby, Crazy Tom, Dink Meeker, Dumper, Fly Molo, Shen and Vlad where are they on the sexual scale? Who knows. At this point having read as much as I have I'd only assume they must all be either gay or sterile. Either way they don't seem to be coming back up for air so they're dead to OSC as far as anyone else is concerned. (oh no he didn't! - yes. he. did.)
Han Tzu the fool tried to get Virlomi's hand in marriage... Alai was silly enough to actually marry her... No babies though so.. Yup, definitely sterile. They should've tried for a few of Bean and Petra's embryos while the going was good (o.0) You think I'm being harse? Check out how warped Virmoli's feelings are on sex:
She took two steps and she was with him, pressing her body against his, entwining the arms of India under his and around his back. She stood on her toes and kissed his lips. Not with vigor, but softly and warmly. It was not a girl’s chaste kiss; it was a promise of love, as best she knew how to show it. She had not had that much experience before Achilles came and made Hyderabad a chaste and terrifying place to work. A few kisses with boys she knew. But she had learned something of what made them excited; and Peter was, after all, scarcely more than a boy, wasn’t he?
Here we go again. You want to call attention and tell us how horny these "boys" are, tease them (yes Verlomi is a tease by very definition), put them in unrealistic situations - surrounded by beautiful people of both sexes fawning over them (oh did I not mention that everyone is beautiful in the verse? Oh but of course! They're all models, or something ) in their sexual primes - let them all be celebrities across the globe and yet you only want them to act out there sexual desires once they're married? Hmm..
That jeesh is screwed in all ways and you know it.
Then we get to Anton who I feel for the most out of this whole debacle of a book. The man is gay and we stick him with the worse fate imaginable and for what? To pretend that we don't see what you're doing? That you're not trying to preach to us far and away from any pulpit? It pisses me the hell off that's what it does. There is no reason that OSC couldn't have found a decent man for Anton to love. He's in ... his seventies! Let him be happy in this world. Let him adopt one of the orphan babies or fine I'll accept your married bs they get married let them find a surrogate for their child. Now there would be some crazy science for you (where are my Orphan Black fans!) The man is utterly brilliant and we make him the whipping boy for a cause they frankly is sad all over. How can anyone profess to love these books and let Anton go unhappy and sexually unsatisfied.
Seriously not one person has a child out of wedlock or in vitro. Everyone throughout the last four books has talked about getting married. Well the most sane of the group (I literally mean the entire cast of the verse here not just the jeesh) Even crazy ass Randi was technically married AND got in vitro. Even though it opened up a HUGE plot hole. How did Randi prove the marriage and get the process done without Bob knowing about it? Who payed for it? Also bonus points for trying to call him something bland and forgetful on purpose but I've already read Fight Club. Bob is a saint. Don't worry it doesn't get any easier the more you think about it. Novinha married a dying sterile man (hmm lots of them going around with all this need for in vitro.. where have all the virile men gone?) and had lots and lots of babies with the other man that she actually loved. Theresa and John Paul... yup and had babies. This is not how the real world works. Religion or no. And yet we still love this universe. We keep coming back for more. (hide spoiler)]
Bet you didn't see that coming when you clicked on the tag did you. You know I'm really frustrated about how much care about these characters and yet OSC just fails at letting them become fully fleshed out people. I actually wept when we got to Ramon's paper. Wept. I don't care what you say about it I couldn't hold it together I thought it was beautiful, while still completely shitty of him, one of the kindest things that he could've done. It make me so mad that all this other crap had to occur in the same book. I would've probably given this book 1-star out of spite had it not been for that and other moments but really that one.
This book is riddled with pointless endeavors to make you think that chastity and/or celibacy are divine and normal... that forcing people into loveless marriages is acceptable and that nothing else in the world exists. Somehow we as EarthGov overpopulated the ENTIRE WORLD by doing only that. Oh wait now how did all those orphans end up on the streets of Rotterdam again?

Actually I do have a gripe, it's the same gripe as many others. Since it's coming up again in book 4 I figured I'd mention it here. This whole business with Anton being gay, not letting him find true happiness, marrying a woman (view spoiler)[and eventually impregnating her (hide spoiler)] is a hot pile of bullshit. Honestly these Mormons are a trip. What I wouldn't give to see a faithful Mormon LGBTQ person in the world today. I would be best friends with that one. I would be best friends with them all. The fact that Card tried to.. I don't know what his intentions were it's horseshit and he knows it. You have a character who is gay and you force him into a loveless sham of a marriage? How sweet.
Regardless the books are still great. It's just annoying how ridiculous the author now looks trying to put his own agenda... or his beliefs agenda into this universe. Shame.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>...more
