Oh and I apologize about the language...I tried, I tried really hard but I'm pissed and it's not going away.
"This is a, uh, shortcut,"
Where to start, where to start... Ok so lets go with I'm trying to be a scifi fan but the more I read lately turns up more utter crap than I would like to admit. Somehow it's all about everything but the stuff that matters. Aliens either matriculating and getting something done, new tech that is sought after, space travel... oh yes there's something about flying in space that lures me in, yet somehow I read about crappy romances, terrible friends, and poor decisions in the face of what wouldn't be so much adversity if someone took a moment and made a plan AND STUCK TO IT!
The thing about the book is since it already got its movie rights they're pretty much set and can write whatever they want in hoping that we'll keep on buying it (jokes on them...) It's clear that this was written without much finesse because there are times where events are unfolding and it almost seems counter productive to the plot but it's done anyway just as filler.
Why only nine? These kids are your last hope and all you can do is scrounge of nine of them! Give me a break! Why in order? What kind of charm is that.. wearing off once they're together? Why not keep charming themselves like their legacies to umm combat all those Mogadorians...
What's with the powers? How convenient is it that the cool "actiony" ones are early and the truly helpful ones come later on with the higher numbers? It's my firm belief the only reason they're nine is because thinking of decent powers for them was too hard for them.
Really? Ella being such a talented sneak and painter? God give me a break. Where did she come from! Oh wait...
Also there is no finesse with the chapters. It feels like they're just jumping you back and forth because they don't really care for their readers. There is no rhyme or reason at times. Sadly right after I was about to toss my reader to the ground in frustration they up and changed their M.O. and started changing their POVs mid chapter. Why? Does it make more sense now? Maybe, clearly now they want to keep the timeline more linear so they have all the action hitting you back and forth like a, wait for it, fast paced action movie...
There is a huge gap in how this reads and what is actually written on the page. The focus is all over the place and it never quite gets to where it's going so they just say screw it and start having things explode. When Rick Riordan (Percy, Kane) writes for YA it feels like he's connecting with his viewers because he understands them. He's got experience with what they like, how they like it and at what kind of pace you want to set down for a series to keep them enraptured (yeah I said it!) When they (Lore) write, it feels like they're just going through the motions, and again I attribute this to Michael Bay's already buying the rights for all the movies so I guess they're good...
I'm all for fandom but seriously when we get to a bit of the Lorian history (finally touching on potential cool bits) of all the names in the world, Lara, just about pushed me over the edge. What kind of poo is that! How obsessed were they with Superman! Now really, who couldn't have been more original? Speaking from reading the comics and watching the movies and Smallville I'm going with they must be quite the fans as well since they've got that who L thing going on. It's clear they're struggling with their originality not only in the power department...
I've gotten to the point in the book where I'm pretty much listening on autopilot to the last few pages of the book. Yes, I switched cause I felt the exact opposite of murderous at this point. Its happened, I finally feel like I no longer care about a story which had so much potential but go so very lost in it's execution. Oh yeah there's a lot more action this time around... and it's mostly pointless. Yes they've removed a lot of the more ridiculous points of the alien plot but now there isn't much to tell about what's happening... well what already had happened. Now there's inconsequential moments in the preset while awake AND dreaming that at this point in time have no bearing on the story whatsoever. There is absolutely no reason for some of the deaths that occur in the book. I'll try and say this once but I feel it's going to keep coming up. Having nine (or ten... wtf they never said why the tenth never made it. Why bring it up is it's MEANINGLESS!) survivors... elders.. WHATEVER is a cop out. Either you get your shit together and make a real plan or you all die and there is no story left to tell.
Speaking of a plan, the "must split up and save each other with the charm" thing is really weighing me down now. Maybe if there was some actual logic behind it I'd buy it but if you can make a charm be so kickass when separated without any explanation then you can probably make it kickass all together now. Please we've all seen The X-Men get their act together and do what needs to be done. Why can't we do it here? Or should I alienate an entire race again and said GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER...
There are so many times where everyone is chilling sitting around doing NOTHING. It can't even count it as waiting, they're just chilling, who wants to read that - with clunky dialog and a bunch of poorly conceived innuendo... well it's not innuendo really it's more like a - oh wait a setup for a absurdly huge waste of my mind love triangle. You know it is possible to go through life without fighting over the same people... or even better yet getting things done as a team without making out at every opportunity. Yeah yeah it's more interesting when done right but it for damn sure wasn't done right here...
Onto the next beef. Since useless people are dead, wait or was it they died for no reason and now they seem useless, why do we get super Lorians now with guns and trench coats? Honestly the last third of this book became such a nightmare. Once the cavalry arrives I'm reminded of all the weak moments where everyone was standing around in the first two thirds and I think where in the crap have you been? What were you all doing in the first book? There is literally no allusions, no reference, no reason for them to really show up except to shoot baddies and be there for moral support... It's almost as though they were invited just to move the plot along since there was a lot about the first book that made it unmanageable. No wait, maybe it would look cool in that movie... By the way you do not get to become Superman once enough of your people die you either always were and have been or you were never. Deal with it. No redoes or mulligans, that's what editing is for. Hmm...
"Did you know that if it wasn't for the wind and my need for caffeine one night in Pennsylvania, the night before the attack in Paradise, I'd have never gotten there in time?"
WHAT! Yes there's the winner, there is the shinning moment that makes all of this a reality show folks. That's about all the logic you need to start reading these books as well. No matter how many there will be in total (some report 4 other say 6 - god please let it be on the low side) I'm done for now and I'll try my best to remind myself of that until they're all out and I may see how it fares then. Good luck....more

There were some parts that honestly had me pausing the audiobook and walking away. At times I just had to read some of the eBook to power through sections....
Speaking of switching formats, while I was listening to the audiobook and got to the epilogue I think I cried...tears of pain cause it was about and hour and 17 minutes. I could check to make sure of the specific time but I've already deleted the book from my phone. It really felt like Clare was paying fan service and not adding ANYTHING to the actual story. She could've cut out most of it and it would've been a lot less painless.
After all those not so good things there were moments I genuinely liked. I found myself relating to Simon the most and enjoyed the banter between him and Clary the most.
Overall it was just like my rating states ok, this like Fallen it's just me finishing out the ride....more

I will say this, why are we all waiting so long to read this? I mean seriously everyone who goes in knows they've got more than a handful of people telling them to...but we just kept waiting. For what? I am kicking myself right now. I mean it's awesome that everything (well is there really everything??) about this series has been released and I can just keep reading until I'm done. No waiting. Not gonna lie that is pretty badass. But I mean honestly it's not like I was thinking to myself, "lets wait until it's all been released then I can read this completely awesome series". No, I really just put it off, unnecessarily, and with no good reason. I am a little ashamed of myself if I'm honest....more

I know I've always been a fan of the smart, witty, dark humored variety but really it hadn't occurred to me until I picked up the short story Death and Waffles (Necromancer: A Novella). Once I knew what I was getting myself into I pretty much as quickly as time (my bandwidth) would allow Audible to download the book for me started listening this and LOVING EVERY MINUTE!
I really liked (a) it wasn't all boy meets girl (b) everyone was still a person (c) even when things were crap there was still sarcasm on Sam's side :-) Honestly, I was so much of fan of this book I knew pretty much 20 minutes in that when it was over I was going to be so sad cause there wouldn't be any more to read. That said I'd start raided other peoples shelves on GR to find more books like it (thank you Flannery for Paranormalcy it's right up my alley).
Oh yeah that book, you've came here for a review right? This one's got everything, necromancers (...), vamps, shifters, even a harbinger (whom I hope you already know and love). Everyone is pretty much trying to get along, doing their own thing, living among all those boring humans. Having jobs and all (hehehe) except for this one badass who apparently has been killing not so random but pretty specifically in fact so until someone figures out what todo about that they're all up the creek...
Like I said it's fun and witty - with loads of fun moments that will have you laughing. I must say as for audiobooks this one is great because the voice of Sam has some artistic moments that shine. He really reads it very well. I won't spoil it for you but you definitely know where the emotion is.
Currently I'm still getting my dark humor fix but when Lish McBride finishes up whatever is next I will be sure to take the plunge no matter what it's about, I don't even care if it's about emo fluffy cotton balls in denial, I'll be there. Hold Me Closer, Necromancer is a definite recommendation to all who are curious. ...more

Rating it anything less than, well, frankly you're insane if you try to even click 4 but we'll go with "under 3". It's the person who would stay in their home, waiting cautiously... paralyzed in fear of the outside world - well after the bloggers have absolutely confirmed that staying indoors is the worst possible thing you can do to keep yourself safe.
If you're that type of person, so scared shitless that you will only live in fear, I beg of you to still read these books, maybe you can learn something... also accept you're most likely going to be dead anyway. Just accept it. Game over.
Clearly I am a fan. My only regret, honest to god, is that I waited so damn long to pick these up. I know I would have still been feverishly trying to finish them but I would've been able to read them feverishly years ago and not today....more

Honestly what I was expecting and what happened were a little off (not like omg huge, just a little) I see where she is trying to go with this and I like that she is slowly putting the crumbs down. There are MANY other books out there where things just seem to happen...and for no reason at all. Here is a great example of what you can accomplish when you spend some time thinking and making things work for the end game. Some things that stand out is that where there are a lot of characters running around and new ones introduced, or maybe, old ones one explained, I like that there are plain regular humans not forgotten in all the drama. I don't remember if it's a trilogy or not but I'm banking on another novella or short story soon. I can't spend this much time away from this family. I like them to much. I ended up re-reading HMCN so many times I can't even tell you, every time I know I was still laughing. When the audiobook comes out later next month I will most likely do the same....more

Alright so I'm still reading this faster than should. I honestly loved this book. It was a perfect installment to this series. Whether you're here now because of your love of scifi, the movie, or randomly picked off the store shelves I think there's something for us all.
Between the voice of Cent and the actual narrator (I must find out how old she was Holy smokes Emily Rankin AKA Emily Janice Card [yup!!]) it really sounds like a teenager was telling you this story. I think it's great. I mean I know it's Gould's writing but really it reads like Cent is real and this is a story about what her life is like in a very important transition of her life. She gets to go to public school. If only it were that simple. Even knowing the most common traps and pitfalls is not going to get this girl through the day. I appreciate how real the day to day felt even in a family with super powers.
I don't remember who said it, and if you do - please reply, but I once heard of someone talking about a show or movie with a good bit of people with super powers. I'm paraphrasing here but "it's not about the powers they have but the people they truly are". Clearly it's stuck with me and here is another great example of "normal" humans getting extraordinary things done. No spoilers but it never seems forced or unrealistic. It just seems like this is how this particular family unit lives.
Now all those positives said I have one negative. Any seasoned fan... hell a n00b who's paying attention realizes that David has a fairly real paranoia from his previous experiences in the series. So can anyone tell me, throughout all the safety measures and precautions, hacks in phones limiting cell tower pickup, disguises, etc etc. Why he would allow his daughter to bring in the most exotic lunches to school daily? It's absurd and it really pains me to say it. I welcome everyone's opinion on this but I think that's the only thing within the pages where I groan internally and try and act like it's not a big deal even though any reasonable person knows that that is like putting a big bullseye on an already hunted individual (family).
See I can't even figure out how to follow that paragraph. It puts such a downer on a very excellent book. I wish everyone could read this. This is one of the super powers on my "if it were real, I'd like that" list. Nightcrawler anyone? YES! Just the idea of a cool family where the sky is the limit living in a world with limits abound makes this interesting. Even if you didn't have..hmm what are they called this time around? Oh, no worries. Even if you didn't have "them" you can still believe that showing off their ability to teleport in the world would be a no no. Who wants that kind of attention.
Yeah I'm sorry, I just can't get the flow back. The food this is minor. I swear on my life. It just cuts me up a bit cause Cent, David, or Millie - some combination of the Rice family, could've been the one cooking fabulous meals on a daily basis and it wouldn't have stuck out as much. Reading or in the moment. Arg. Definitely going on my "read to many times I'm embarrassed to admit it" shelf. I cannot wait to see what Gould does next. My only sincere hope is that it doesn't take another decade to read about it. BUT if it does it cool. I know it's aged well....more

I don't want to ruin a thing so this review is going to be short. Peter Clines is KATN, every book is honestly getting better and better. Funny thing is, I thought he was already at the top of his game with his Ex series. I am speechless. The book centers around a group living in an strange apartment. By the time things get going you won't even realize how much information you gleamed or how much time has past. I honestly was surprised at moments and other times glad to see things happen that made sense. While the story is clearly set in a reality when things start going in a different direction it doesn't seem forced or faked at all. You really believe what it happening and the story really doesn't take you out of it at any moment. I was a fan.
One thing, if I ever start my own mystery gang... nope can't do it. Read this book! It's very good....more

Yes Feed was perfect, do you want to know why - because this take had to be "cut" for the one presented in the book to happen. Also what is with all this copy and paste bullshit. Wake up people it is an alternate ending, it is something that *could have happened* it doesn't need to be entirely fleshed out. We already know what happens in the already canon and published version. We get new blog posts, new POVs, and a new way for the Masons to end it.
I can't fault how people are upset that things seem a bit out of character - that is why it didn't make the cut. Actually of all the things out of character - imagine if they did both go at the same time. Can you imagine if the whole truth *didn't* get out? /me laughs maniacally - that would be even more out of character.
Again, calm down people. This is a different way to see things, which I appreciated and can look at objectively.

I have now read 4 Jumper books, 1 AU novel, and 1 short story. I can honestly tell you this has become my favorite since we're solidly in the geeking out with science and dreaming the "impossible" I don't want to spoil a thing but by the title it should tell you where the story is going. It's so worth it. Cent is again the main protagonist but we get (as usual) get a few chapters from other POVs, even one or two that come completely by surprise but totally make sense. I adore the Rice family they are truly extraordinary. Hmm, somehow extraordinary just seems so pedestrian after this book.
What I really appreciate the most is how Gould's obsession with details always leads to more and more interesting tech and scientific knowledge. I am no engineer but I'd imagine a lot of this book would pass mustard without question and any bits that stretch laws only stretch in the realm of possibility and theory. It's not like it's some new fad either. Even in Reflex there is possible my favorite moment of any book I've ever read where Millie *considers* hacking into a computer and decides to pass on the the whole endeavour knowing there just wasn't enough time.
Honestly I can't keep talking about this book without ruining too much but suffice to say. The Rice family takes things to a new level when Cent tries out her hand with contributing to the world. It's a good time all around. Honest. If you're a fan you will feel very at home. Suffice to say this isn't the first time (nor I suspect the last) where you'll really be sad you don't possess their ability yourself.
