No lie, I appreciate her honestly. Even from the first pages where she makes fun of"you" reading a book for months and telling you this is not that kind of book, if you're still reading this a month later she clearly states there's something wrong with you. That said it took me 5 days to listen to 4 hours. I know not great but what do you do... The length of this is perfect. It doesn't try and pretend that Mindy Kaling is the greatest person that has ever lived and give you entire tomes to read ad nauseum.
Overall by listening to the audiobook a few things happened. First, you get to enjoy Mindy reading with her own flair. It's very enjoyable, she's snarky and witty and sometimes has just the right amount of burning truth that even as a listener you think, "oh damn, that's totally me and I'm sorry." The biggest topic discussed is The Office. I did have a status update that specifically thought it was a distraction, every time she said "while I am writing at The Office" or some iteration of that, I thought to myself for a decent portion of this book, I know, you have a great job working at... The Office. To be fair to all parties, I was a little bias. She mentions the group of people who are either outright rude and inconsiderate (not me) or the ones who've avoided something not truly giving it a fair shake and holding it unfairly against lightning in a bottle (me). When she makes the joke about great new tv show ideas and how the one about unusual animals that have friended each other and how widely popular it is but "it's never going to be as good as the original British version called 'Chums'" I had to take a moment to reflect and apologize. Also you may never notice by reading only one copy of the book that there is a fairly umm, let's go with refreshed, edition in audio's text. It's not that the versions are glaringly different but certain passages are reworked. Mindy ad libs a bit (it's good, I liked it) or clarifies the more funky footnotes that I did find in the text. I must say, there is nothing wrong with it but when she's reading it's clear she reworked things in the studio whether before the read itself or during. While I think it works I do feel like I missed out on some bits of text here and there. Lastly on the topic of missed things, the photos (which isn't specified until 93% of the way in) are clearly not able to be represented in the audio. The book is autobiographical when the photo is used specifically to show a version of Mindy or an event that is being referred to she just reads a description of it in place of "in the book you'll find this photo" I think it's fair to the listeners and for 4 hours it's a sacrifice that doesn't break me.
Great moments are what she did while out of work and how unrealistic and ridiculous Hollywood can be and why it doesn't matter what your expectations are you're always going to be surprised. Whether it's a show you love and adore and are quickly being disillusioned or trying to look nice on the red carpet. It's all craziness and you can either get on board or choose to walk away. I think she does a good job of staying current (read, obsessed in pop culture, especially dieting) without sounding like a crazy person all the while holding down a paid writing gig.
I'm glad I got the chance to read this. I'm also now going watch more of Amy Poehler and now more willing to pick up Tina Fey's book since everyone (including Mindy) and their brother is saying how hilarious it is. I don't normally read bios (how do you shorten biography, or autobiography without looking like an idiot?) and choose them very wisely. Frankly the worst thing that can happen is hearing the life and events that make up someone I am a fan of and then no longer wanting to see or hear nothing more of them. This one did not let that happen. Mindy had me laughing in hysterically late into the night (morning? I'm a 2nd shifter atm) and I didn't mind a bit. It's a good time and it's not a lengthy one so it's recommended to the fans of and the curious ones of Mindy Kaling.

Unfortunately those are entirely accurate and I am ashamed... For some reason this got lost in the shuffle and after switching phones and everything I just spent months not paying any attention to it. It is however a damn fine book. I don't know what kept me. I could give you a myriad of excuses of how or why but it's just a waste of both of our times. Do pick this up. Do read a book that hasn't become "Hollywood" by giving you a "happily ever after". Do read a book that talks about real things without trying to "save you" from the unfortunate acts life can throw onto an unwilling person.
Enough about that. This book is good. I don't even really care how much is fiction or based on real events.... no matter sometimes you will be so mad at the things awful people do and you find yourself in tears then other times you're laughing at the awkwardness displayed by our protagonist, Charlie. That kid is cool and not enough people see that. He's definitely got the short end of the stick but he's trying to make the most of it and I frankly commend him for trying.
While you may mock this one for being "YA" it definitely has some lessons in here that everyone should learn. I appreciated seeing someone being a good person and doing good times. Nothing more, nothing to preachy, not being a "you know what" about it. While he's not perfect, Charlie does his best and most of the time it reads like a person who cares.
Yes, I listened to the audiobook and it was a little distracting at first. It's no one's fault but I little disclaimer would've been nice. It took me a while to realize what was happening and the letter format was the intention throughout the book but overall I liked it. I just wish someone would've said, "this audiobook is presented exactly like it's novel. the letters read by charlie are by design" or something like that. Trust me. Anyone else reading it is going to be a little confused for awhile, unless previously given the heads up, it's ok though, you figure it out soon enough and can just listen without issue.
Ummm. I'm not sure what happened. I love the premise, I love the characters... Hmm.

I went back and re-read the first two books. I don't know why I was being such a stick in the mud but right now I'm laughing and smiling. I this everything about this is genius. It's cute and fluffy and gorgeous. Seriously, the water colors are amazing. I know for a fact what I want in my life. I want a panel. Just one cause I'm sure it's going to be hella expensive but I want a panel from this series. I have to have me one... I'm not telling you which one so you can all go and find it and jack up the price for me ;-)
Hmm...5 8(!?!) books just showed up for free this week I wonder if we should be worried for them:
Maybe it's too cute... too adorable. That's possible right?

It's adorable, and I love it. I know it may have seemed I was hating on it a bit but I was definitely not in the right head space for it then. It's fun and entertaining and chocked full of Li'l moments that make you feel all warm and fuzzy.(less)

I've found it just perfect. Seriously, highly recommended to all ages and make sure not going to be distracted by that pesky villian called life. Hand to heart if you sit down for a few minutes with nothing on your mind and read this you will be giggling and smiling in a few pages. Ahh Damian xD(less)
