I thought that the foundation of humans with a bit 'more' threaded with the heroine's music and the sexy nerdiness of the hero was a winning combination. It is sexy without the details in the consummation, which left a lot more room for the characters and the story. Good stuff.
Just a side nit, I really disliked cover - not only is this a photoshop fail (since the model has a serious slouch and when combined with the background element at his waist behind his back he looks fat) but this story is screaming for something more special than the generic tatted man chest to get this book noticed. I 'bit', because I get the Entangled newsletter and it was a .99 Monday steal and the blurb sounded new and different - I wouldn't have given this a second look if I had come across it when I was just cruising covers and that would have been a shame. ...more

Ryu gets his own story, a case to solve and a human partner who is not found of supes. I thought this was a good little Jane universe story for fans and Ryu has grown a bit and is more introspective since I last saw him (I am a couple of books back in the series so that may be old news) and he's fairly appealing in the lead. I really hope there's more books with him, because this was tease that left me wanting to know what comes next.
I can't sign off without mentioning the cover - first, since it diverges from the Jane books in a big way, and second, since it's oh so sexy. I personally like it, but if you are worried that what's between the covers has taken a turn for the Uber erotic, you don't need to be. There's some nice tension between the leads but really only the promise of more to come - which is good because this is really too short to tell the story and do that too....more

I did enjoy this, though I do think I'd have liked it a bit better in audio. Mostly due to the fact that there's more interaction between the supporting characters in this one and I liked that. Plus the big finish would have been a bit less confusing at the slower pace, though the very info-dumpy start of the book would have been prolonged so that evens out. One thing that the author did in both books was to leave us with a tease - and now I am dying to find out what happens next....more

The framework for the Quick with the old undead tombstone gang was good and I liked the idea of the old west gang of vamps running an old west vacation resort.
While there was promise, I did have major nits with the execution - especially in the romance where the Smex is 0 to 60 in no time flat (complete with purple body parts and cruder language). Don't get me wrong the problem wasn't the heat level in itself but more that the short length meant that with having to set the series up everything else in the story was really thin- the characters, the relationship development and the suspense back plot. And there were things with the hero that really bothered me - the heroine has a trauma from a twisted ex in her background and the hero's strategy for 'protecting' her from the bad guy mirrors elements involved in the trauma - I just never could get past that even if the heroine did -it just steals all of her personal power.
That said there is promise in the sequel bait -a vamp vamp pairing with history - and I have liked Raye's other cowboy vamps, so I am hoping that this was just a case of first book-it is and will likely give the next one a shot.

The sample for Not Dead Enough was really awesome, Julia lives in a company town and her ex has launched a smear campaign that has left her villified by everyone, but things only get worse when she is kidnapped by some really scary guys who she initially thinks are her ex's goons, but are in reality so much worse.
I am not generally a fan of zombie romances but the "science imitates art" premise of military experiments that created SARAs (Self Aware Re-Animates AKA zombies), Bloods (vampires), and lycans is a good foundation - and fortunately the zombie former soldiers who've managed to escape from the lab are for the most part able to manage their condition without having to eat anyone - so even being mostly dead doesn't trump their strength and speed and fabulous physiques.
Our zombie leading man is caring, protective, and heroic, and Julia who ends up ensnared in the bad guy vamps' evil plot is great- even as a human she refuses to be a victim. There's a lot of action and with a zombie leading man it's not surprising that the there's a fair amount of gore (though thankfully not in his feeding.) The romance starts out with care from our hero but is fueled by an instant soul mate vibe which I just rolled with - I am becoming sort of schitzophrenic about when this bothers me and when it doesn't.
I did have minor nits: 1) the hero's compatriots are mostly referred to by their last names, so when a first name was occasionally tossed in it threw me, 2) I really didn't need the two major love scenes to be as detailed as they were since they kind of slowed the story down and 3) -as a personal nit - said love scenes contained my unfavorite female P-word .
Nits aside, this was almost as good as I'd hoped it would be from the sample, and there's plenty of sequel bait in the hero's 'crew' ....more
