Victor Mancini is a sex addcit, medical school drop out with serious mommy issues. It would seem that some people find Mr. Palahnuiks writing juvenile (this is my first novel by Palahniuk however) but I found it refereshing and entertaining with stokes of genius...
"I've defined my life, by what I was against...I fought against everything but more and more I worry that I was never for anything.... griping isnt the same as creating something, rebelling isnt building. Ridiculing isn't replacing....we've taken the world apart but we have no idea what to do with the pieces... I used rebellion as a way to hide out. We use critisim as a take on participation.....it only looks like we created something" See also: things that make you think I think that as a reader if you were completely distracted by the blunt sexaul acts and remarks and missed the words like these I can understand why you may not have liked this story. Even though I did feel that this is the only way that sex addicts should be portrayed; raw, unapologetic, and blunt as I feel that real life can seem blunt and disgusting too if it were simply written down. The only thing I did not like however about Choke was probably what should have been a great ending as it had all the elements but it didnt quite get pulled off and part of me feels that I don't believe that many people would give money to someone just because they save them from choking. In my opinion I think most people who are truly saved from near death experiences are more likely to show their gratitude to the savior not the other way around.
If you can find humor in saddness, and in the disfunction of other people and are not easily squimish then this book is for you.

Its not everyday (especially lately) that I come across a gripping, well written Dark Ya novel. After finishing this book I found that I couldn't read another book for a few days because my mind was still wrapped around this one. I didn't know how to feel. Was/is it wrong to want to root for Mya and Lochan to be together? Should the world feel sorrow or disgust for these young lovers? If we are to accept such love between siblings, what next Mrs Suzuma, the love between man and child?? I don't know but now I wonder and would love to hear the tale of one brave enough to write it.
Everything is raw, there was no bullshit safe cop out ending, no "oops we aren't related by the way" ending that most people would assume there would be. However I will admit my only minor dislike about the ending was how extreme it was almost bordering to highly unlikely. I personally didn't really believe that because they had sex that the law would find it really necessary to punish them especially if it was known it was consenual. So in sense I kind of think that Lochan kind of over reacted. Never the less Forbidden is meant to make the reader uncomfortable, its bold and enticing but it is not for everyone. Those of a close minded nature are warned to stay away.(less)
