In this world of were dragons Hartman throws in some philosophy, music and religion which I found refreshing. I also enjoyed how Hartman wrote about love; how for a were dragon in human form love was a virus that dispelled logic and once discovered made dragons want to stay human. The characters also made me kept be reading because although they weren't ones that I fell completely in love with they certainty weren't ones that I hated or were annoyed by. The only reason I didn't give this book five stars was because there were times I wasn't interested on the what was going on. I felt at times that (not that the story was bad) I didn't not feel like I absolutely had to keep reading. When the writing, characters and world building is up to par I expect to feel that burning desire to finish or at least become obsessed with trying to figure out when the sequel is coming out but I don't. Also the romance in this story was kind of blah. The romance in any story does not have to be the main focus for me to enjoy the story but I do expect to enjoy it or believe it. For me Prince Lucian was Boring! I didn't hate him.... I just felt like he wasn't that interesting. Hartman created a situation were the characters could have expressed some true angst but she didn't deliver that in anyway... it seemed to me that Lucian and seraphina we only in each others presence a hand full if times and she all of a sudden realizes that she is in love with him. I didn't feel any real chemistry between them making the "falling in love" part for me not quite believable. Would I read the sequel if it came out? maybe If I remember this story by then and I am going through a terrible book phase and I am desperate to read something that is excellently written.(less)

Victor Mancini is a sex addcit, medical school drop out with serious mommy issues. It would seem that some people find Mr. Palahnuiks writing juvenile (this is my first novel by Palahniuk however) but I found it refereshing and entertaining with stokes of genius...
"I've defined my life, by what I was against...I fought against everything but more and more I worry that I was never for anything.... griping isnt the same as creating something, rebelling isnt building. Ridiculing isn't replacing....we've taken the world apart but we have no idea what to do with the pieces... I used rebellion as a way to hide out. We use critisim as a take on participation.....it only looks like we created something" See also: things that make you think I think that as a reader if you were completely distracted by the blunt sexaul acts and remarks and missed the words like these I can understand why you may not have liked this story. Even though I did feel that this is the only way that sex addicts should be portrayed; raw, unapologetic, and blunt as I feel that real life can seem blunt and disgusting too if it were simply written down. The only thing I did not like however about Choke was probably what should have been a great ending as it had all the elements but it didnt quite get pulled off and part of me feels that I don't believe that many people would give money to someone just because they save them from choking. In my opinion I think most people who are truly saved from near death experiences are more likely to show their gratitude to the savior not the other way around.
If you can find humor in saddness, and in the disfunction of other people and are not easily squimish then this book is for you.

This is my only explanation for why this book so popular. I say this only because I feel that people would be impressed by something like this if they never read anything like this before in any degree. The things that are done in this book can be blush worthy but they have been written before and done better; the writing was only mediocre. I am not saying the book was terrible because its not and can be a nice time passer I just don't think it is worth the all the hype. I felt very deceived by all attention this book received so I think I was expecting something different. I don't about anybody else but although Mr. Grey did seduce Anastasia I wasn't seduced as the reader. I don't know If I'm being clear but I didn't feel seduced by the story in the sense that I felt I didn't feel true angst/ a development of love/ a feeling of elation when two characters come together if you will and after awhile the sex scenes although amusing become too much and too often in a novel that I eventually became annoyed and desensitized to it. However perhaps I am looking at this in the wrong way and being to harsh for if you want mindless written porn this it perfect for you ---- I just (I repeat) still don't think its worth the hype!(less)
