It was a bit slow at times, and somewhat redundant, but I liked how the author was able to weave the biography of not only her mother, but her own life as she wrote this adoring tribute. I read the whole thing in about a day, so its engaging and definately a quick read. There is a movie about the book as well, but I haven't seen it yet.(less)

This was actually my first digital book purchase. Bought it on Kindle so I could read it on my tablet on the plane during our trip to Ireland. I think for some reason, it took me a really long time to get through the book. Not for lack of interest, but timing, as well as the different sort of language style that had me reading and re-reading parts all throughout the book to catch the "feel" of it. Love, love, Loved! the storyline. Very heart-wearming and made me think alot about the black history of this country. I feel ashamed and embarrassed that my ancestral Americans treated "colored" people in such a way. Its not like I didn't know it had happened, but the book somehow made it very real to me. I love how many different stories and perspectives the author was able to weave into the plot. I really liked the characters of "Skeeter" and "Minny". Readers beware, there is one graphic and extremely inappropriate "scene" described in detail so if you are sensitive, skip ahead a few pages when you start to read about the "naked man" in miss Celia's backyard. (Overall the book was unoffensive, and well written.)(less)

It probably could have given the same messages with a couple hundred less pages though. The underlying theme and developing romance was enough to keep me reading until the end and I will read #3 as well. But I agree with other reviews that there was alot of "filler" that didn't necessarily contribute to the most important parts of the plot. It is fun to get to know all of the people of Neiderbipp, but it is too much information for one person, ie: the reader, to remember and alot of it isn't critical to the plot. But I still liked it. I loved how much spirituality and life lessons there were again, and I even had thoughts of things I could do to improved in many spiritual ares. So all in all I would say I enjoyed it. I read the entire book in less than day, and it has over 400 pages. So it was definitely a page turner for me.(less)

It was very different from any books I have ever read before. I think I would call it more of a memoir of sorts. Though the main Character is supposed to be fictional, I get that the author may be retelling his own life story through a fictional set of characters. In fact i just quickly looked up some things online, and now I'm sure that is whats going on. So this is somewhat a true story. It travels slowly, but even still the story line was enough to keep my interest and keep me coming back for more. I am half way through book 2 already, "Discovering Isaac." It has alot of Christian and religious thoughts and wisdom, and lots of life lessons and uplifting advice. I'm not sure exactly whats pulling me in, but I feel compelled to keep reading, and am thoroughly enjoying it.(less)

But I learned alot from the book. I could relate with her thinking in a lot of ways. I feel like I want better for my kids than most people and that I expect MORE out of them, and that I push them harder and work them harder. And YES, I am a screamer and a yeller, but that is just because I lack patience and stamina sometimes. I also realized a MAJOR flaw in my own parenting skills, and the sad part is I'm not sure if it's one I'm willing to fix, or improve. She spent HOURS in the rooms practicing music with her daughters. She was right there, the WHOLE time, pushing them and helping them improve. I tend to be a "Do what I say" mom, and not so much an "in the trenches mom"... and this book really made that apparent to me. I HATE "Riding Herd" (as my mom calls it). All in all I think it was a good read, and worth the time. I dont' agree with EVERYTHING she did, but you can see as you're reading it WHY she did some of it. And the ending is somewhat surprising. Now YOU read it and tell me what you think!

I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be recommending it to my family and friends. It teaches a great moral through the gift of story. Well written, interesting and keeps the readers attention throughout. I especially loved the ending and how it all ties together. Thanks Bill!(less)

In fact I'm only less than 1/2 way through and I am using the techniques and seeing results already. I love how many real life situations are included, and scripts of what to say and how to say it. I read 1/2 of the first L&L book too, I just forgot how great it was! (less)
