I perked up when she went to see the OW, ok that took guts but alas, I did not get the Dynastyesque hair-pulling fight I wanted. Still, I liked that scene when the H shows up - no man comes across well in those circumstances, does he? I had an absurd picture in my mind of Prince Charles wringing his hands and stuttering pompously as Diana and the rottweiler trade barbs over him. The h improved after that, blowing up at the H and eventually leaving him, but it was a little too late for me.
He's another jerk hero who offers marriage for money instead of love, and then disses the h for marrying him for money. Illogical much? She-bitch who left him when he got injured years ago now wags her tail at him and off he goes like a hound, loving wife be damned. I'm afraid that he really did sleep with the rottweiler, but even if he didn't he gets no points from me. As the h says "There are other ways of being unfaithful besides spending the night with a woman".
Speaking of the OW, she was satisfactorily nasty and selfish, and it's too bad really that she and H didn't end up together so she could make him as miserable as he deserved.
I liked the friend Carol. At least she had spunk. And some good lines. Why couldn't we have HER for the heroine?
Heroine: "it's just the fact of my being there which is forcing him into doing horrid, unhappy things which aren't really natural to him."
Carol:"Well, darling, I'm not really following the logic of this"

There are some nice 30's touches - a rug for the car, going to the corner phone booth, the real fur coat (better not let PETA read this!)
The plot was ok, the writing was smooth, but I didn't like the pacing much. The hand thing I saw coming a mile off and it was resolved by page 70 or so. I guess I expected more of a Hitchcockian creeping dread about when and how the H would find out about the letter, but it came too early also and was kinda anti-climactic to me. The foreshadowing about the baby was ridiculously obvious. She's so tired! She feels sickly! She's so tired! We get it already, duh. There was some good drama and angst after that but I couldn't care enough because I just didn't like the H. And babydrama is just not my thang. The ending was unsatisfactory because he didn't grovel enough or even say ILY.

A love triangle can be angsty, although not my favorite trope. I usually find a hero/heroine waffling over who they really love to be annoying and a romance buzzkill. This one didn't work for me at all cuz all 3 sides of this love triangle were obtuse. I've rarely seen such illogical and incomprehensible behavior. I like angst but here's the thing - you gotta like the folks involved, or even just understand them, in order to feel moved by their plight. With all 3 sides here acting bizarrely, all I felt was a big yawn coming on.
Karen - the heroine, I wish I knew ye. No, seriously. What are your thoughts on travel, art, Mexican food? How did I read an entire book about you and still not know anything except that you're obsessed with first David and then Hal? It's all David, David, David. Then Hal, Hal, Hal. Don't believe me? Try this passage: "It was impossible to actually pinpoint the time when her life had stopped revolving around David and started revolving around Hal, but as the weeks had passed her awareness of him had grown until he was now the focus of practically everything she did and thought and felt." Oy! Now I don't expect to find a hotbed of radical feminism in my HP reading but give me a break.
Hal - the hero, I don't understand you. Did you love Karen's sister or not? You said "I never loved Kirsty but I gave her love". WTF does that mean? Why would you stay in a relationship for 6 years with a woman you didn't love? Why did you propose marriage to a woman you didn't love? Who does that? You say you love Karen now, but when did you fall in love with her? I didn't feel it happening dude. And why did you insist from the start on your marriage to Karen being a "full" marriage instead of a marriage in name only? When Karen despite the odds was happy, why did you pitch a fit? Why accuse her of enjoying her new lifestyle too much? She didn't marry you for your money, she married you because you blackmailed her, remember?
Kirsty - the dead sis, oh where do I begin with you? Why did you conceal Hal's baby when you knew he would welcome kids? And then go on living with him after, who does that? If you loved Hal, why did you turn down his proposal of marriage? Why did you lie to Karen about Hal not wanting kids? Why in 6 years did you never bring Hal home to your family to meet? Why did you press Hal to marry Karen when you were dying, how could you "know" they were right for each other when they'd never even met? Is Hal right that you had a death wish, and if so why?

With this brilliant start, we launch on a heavily dialogue-centric, unusual HP set in Africa. The banter is very enjoyable, at least for the 1st 1/2 of the story. The plot is good and the writing is good, but the pacing didn't quite work for me. I liked the banter in the beginning but it does get old after a while, and I found myself wanting something more substantial that I could sink my teeth into. Then the pace picks up with the sex and the flashbacks and angsting. Then it bogs down again in the heroine's bizarre dreams and more snark. And so on.
Overall though it is a good read. The heroine is likable despite pushing everyone away. I felt her angst very well, but did get impatient with her toward the end. The hero is likable too and pleasingly persistent/stalkerific, without ever being a jerk. He's a bit bland, having some of his POV would make me feel that I got to know him better. It's nice to see an ordinary guy as a HP hero though, and I really appreciated that he wasn't some Greek/Spanish/Italian gazillionaire. The sexual tension is hot in the 1st 1/2, but the sex when it comes is not graphic. The ending is sweet and appropriate.
I love unusual settings in my HP's and have to give the Africa locale big points. It's almost a 3rd character in the story, it's so omni-present. Wonderful description of landscape, villages, beaches, foods, rundown hotels. Brings this up to a good 4*. ...more
