It is really impressive the way that the narrative develops, bringing up small elements that on the beginning seems small and irrelevant, that later develop as an important part of the plot. I agree with other reviews that the book sometimes get a bit slow, but the story has so many ups and downs that there is always some tension going on.
The whole story is really imaginative, and is set in a completely unique universe. I loved the way that Susanna Clarke describes the process of doing magic and the discussions of how a spell can be modified. It's not just a flick of a wand and saying a magic word like in the Harry Potters series, but more complex and meaningful (obviously, inside that universe) and full of concepts.
If you are up for the challenge, and you don't want a book that you will 'devour' in a day or two, I think this is a great recommendation....more
