Margaret is the daughter of a ranch tycoon, who is yearning to see his only daughter out of britches and into a proper garment fit for courting. MargaMargaret is the daughter of a ranch tycoon, who is yearning to see his only daughter out of britches and into a proper garment fit for courting. Margaret, who has managed the ranch and can work alongside the best of the ranch hands, has no desire to get primped up to just look pretty and serve tea and sandwiches. After all, she has hands and feet the size of Texas, untamed red hair, and her height and stature doesn't convey a daintiness that the other women in town seem to possess naturally.
When her father hires Daniel, an unknown from out of town, to manage the ranch, sparks fly. After watching him closely, Margaret realizes that Daniel isn't the cowboy that he puts on. Behind those sexy eyes and grin, he hides a secret and Margaret aims to find out what it is, hoping her father will send him on his way. The closer she gets to Daniel, the more intrigued she is. His interest in her has not gone unnoticed, but Margaret is reluctant to tear down the wall around her heart and leave the ranch unprotected. His confessions of faith seem at war with her knowledge that he is part of a gang in town planning to rob the local bank. She plans to find a way to free him from his past.
Great story! Love, faith, and a great mystery rolled into one delightful novel. Margaret is certainly headstrong and stubborn, but Daniel urges her to trust him and trust in the Lord. Lots of interesting characters and twists in the plot....more

Hurley arrives back in town just as Mattie has runs over and kills her stalker with her hearse. He is shocked but delighted with the news of her pregnancy. But Mattie's refusal to get married puts a strain on their relationship.
Loved the story and the plot kept me reading and guessing until the end. Mattie has a lot of quips and laugh-out-loud thoughts about the wonderful things pregnancy does to one's body. In this particular book, Mattie is relating the story to her shrink as part of her therapy, so the chapters occasionally alternate. ...more

The chef is murdered and LA group women, along with their husbands, win a trip to Paris and a week's worth of cooking classes from a well-known chef. The chef is murdered and Lucy is the last one to see him alive. They quickly realize the investigation is run quite differently in France when their passports are confiscated by the police until the matter can be sorted out, which may be quite some time. Lucy luckily has time to visit with her daughter, who had recently been promoted to an assistant concierge in a Paris hotel. Lucy attempts to help solve the case, hoping to get the group's passports back and be on their way back to the USA. Twist and turns abound amid much sightseeing and eating Parisian style.
I liked the overall premise of the book, but I felt it was too bogged down by the over abundance of descriptions, as well as the dark political factions and foreign connections that divide France. It was a stretch to really feel that the latter two things would have such an impact on the murder. I may read another Lucy Stone book, but this one didn't seem to hit the mark for me....more

They are startled and excited to unearth a hidden room filled with treasures (furniture, artwork, jewelry, etc.) dating back to WWII. Unfortunately the excitement turns to shock when Brooklyn discovers a mummified body. As they examine the body closer, Brooklyn, a book-restoration expert, finds a very rare book among the man's possessions and feels compelled to slip it out of the cave for further examination before the local authorities arrive.
The book contains a cryptic letter written in a secret language, and a map that leads them to find another secret room filled with treasures. A connection is made to the revered commune leader, Guru Bob, and his grandfather, who apparently brought his townsmen's valuables to the US to avoid having them seized by the Nazis during the war. Were the treasures hidden all these years for protection, or hidden away as an act of theft?
News of the treasures have spread worldwide and heirs clamor for their possessions back. Hard feeling abound. Brooklyn must use her talents and resources to discover why the man was murdered, and how the treasures were sealed in the cave before another body turns up.
Although this is book nine in the series, it is my first bibliophile mystery. The background was filled in nicely so that I didn't feel that I had missed anything by not reading the books in order. I liked the characters, especially Brooklyn's quirky parents. The descriptions were clear throughout the book and not overly done. I especially enjoyed reading the parts that dealt with Brooklyn refurbishing a book and found it fascinating. Will look forward to reading more in this series.

I actually remember returning this book to the library last year, unread, because the short amount I had read didn't hold my interest at the time. I am glad I gave it another chance. This is the first book I have read by Maron and it certainly won't be the last. After finding out that the characters had been the subject of many Maron books before this one, I worried that I might not understand the background to maintain a good grasp of the plot. Not to worry (at least, I think), because I think it can easily be read as a stand alone.
The story is told in a blend of first and third person, giving it a bit of a unique feel. The characters were quite varied and the descriptions vivid enough to feel you were present at the scene. There were several twists in the story that gave that element of surprise. ...more

This was a quick and delightful read. The main plot and sub-plots flowed together nicely, the story was well written, and the supporting characters were believable. I loved watching the characters change and develop throughout the story. There were several very unexpected surprises that left me gasping for breath. Would love to see this story develop into another book....more

The source fears for his life and seeks Stone's protection, but is killed in a hit-and-run. While the story is being readied to expose the unscrupulous behavior of the Republican party, a long standing friend and mentor passes away, leaving Stone in charge of executing the estate. This unfortunately forces Stone to deal with the man's daughter, who had been sequestered abroad while receiving psychiatric care. The fact that she was once Stone's wife and tried to kill him is more than bothersome.
I always enjoy spending time with Stone Barrington, although this book seemed to lack the 'ump' of his earlier books. Is it because Stone is so filthy rich that he barely dirties his hands with real work anymore? The plot was very interesting and made for a quick read. Many familiar faces return in supporting roles, and as usual, Stone seems to never want for companionship in the bedroom. Dino, the police commissioner, is ever present as the best friend / side kick. This book also tips us as to Woods' political leanings, as the Republicans were given quite the black eye, as though the Democrats are faultless to the core. ...more

As Gabby cleans up the sGabby's fledgling business as a crime scene cleaner has been called into service after a politician's wife has been murdered. As Gabby cleans up the scene, she inadvertently discovers something hidden under a floorboard that could be considered the murder weapon. Her background in forensic science and an overdose of curiosity push her to look deeper into the situation, while the local Detective on the case dismisses her speculations and hunches as musings from a 'wannabe Nancy Drew'. She develops a friendship with the cute new tenant across the hall, and despite his somewhat secretive background, he is more than willing to help after her elderly employee is accused of the woman's murder. After several attempts are made on Gabby's life, the suspicious detective begins to take her more seriously. A romantic angle begins to build between Abby and the two men, although there are several twists that derails one of them.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and the plot was interesting and well done. One of the characters viewed the troubles from his Christian viewpoint, which I felt was explained nicely without being preachy. Gabby's resistance to any belief in God was believable and honest. The supporting characters were varied; quirky vegan neighbor, lying politicians, and various mistresses. Gabby's loyalty to her employee was laudable, but once she believed she had solved the murder, she couldn't see much beyond what she wanted to see. Not very open-minded. The romantic angle was very subtle, but definitely left you wanting to know where things were headed. I would definitely like to read the next book in the series. ...more
