This is a seriously bad place for those not aware and not prepared. John Taylor was born in the Nightside. Many creatures fear him coming back.
There were lots of subtle culture references, and also lots of stereotypes, but I've gotta say, I loved the 60's Coke and the casual mention of the 5 Tracy brothers and comments like "the plaque rats go around in pairs cause they're frightened."
Lots of strange people in the Nightside, doing lots of strange things. Probably strangest of all is the Timeslip, where John finds out he causes the end of human civilisation if he goes looking for his mother.
It really reminds me of Kolchak: The Night Stalker TV show, from way back. The action is very TV episode-like as well, like it'd fit between ad breaks.
I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series, but I don't feel a great need to read it now, next month will be fine....more

Ender and his sister Valentine have been skipping from planet to planet and therefore time has moved differently for them.
In those 3,000 years Ender has become the Speaker for the Dead, the one who told the true story of the Bugger War. People now call it xenocide because they now understand that the Buggers didn't mean them any harm.
A second intelligent race has been discovered and some unexpected deaths have occurred. A Speaker has been requested and Ender has agreed to go to Lusitania, even though it takes 22 years to get there. Valentine has married and started a family and thus remains on Trondheim.
This is a story of families, anthropologists and religious crises. But a Speaker only speaks the truth no matter who doesn't want to hear it.
Ender has decided to stay on Lusitania because he fell in love with Novinha when she was 13 and requested his services. He could relate to her pain and anguish. Once he arrives on planet he also begins to love her 6 children, all of whom need assistance following the death of their father.
Once again Orson Scott Card has written a masterpiece....more
Peter Grant, Police Constable, Apprentice Wizard for the Met, and the only apprentice wizard in the last 50 years, stumbles across a case of Jazz Vampires while his boss, Chief Inspector Nightingale is recovering from a gun shot wound from the previous book.
The book is full of dry wit and a subtle sarcasm, like watching British TV, which I grew up on. Doctor Who even gets a mention :)
There were some great chase scenes and abducting an ambulance and ending up in the Thames was a classic.
Generally I'm not a great fan of lengthy descriptions of places and people, just enough to get a sense of things is all I require, yet in these novels I love all the descriptions and I feel I'm really there.
What I didn't like was Peter jumping into bed with a suspect, which even he thought was wrong, but continued to do it anyway. It felt like emotionless clinical shagging just for the sake of it and at the same time he is visiting, texting and speaking to poor disfigured Constable Lesley who is at home awaiting multiple surgeries, following the case where Nightingale was shot and she suffered a magical attack. Her family assumes he is her boyfriend but he sure doesn't act like it.
There was also another case where Peter is consulting for the Murder Team where penises are chomped off by toothy vaginas, which Peter resolves but we never find out why it was happening.
Peter discovers that a Master Wizard, that he dubs "The Faceless One" and Nightingale calls a "Black Magician" is creating hybridized cat-people and may have something to do with penis chomping and jazz vampires. Which of cause sets us up for further books with a dastardly "ethically challenged practioner" as our villan....more

Jayné Heller inherits houses, money and lots of supernatural problems when her Uncle Eric is murdered in Denver. None of which she knew about before coming to Denver to settle his estate.
Eric's lifestyle also comes with a motley crew of associates that used to work for Eric on an ad hoc basis. Aubrey, the scientist, Ex, a former Jesuit priest, Chogyi Jake, a Buddhist with some magic and Midian, a man claiming to be 200yrs old and suffering from a curse put on him by our Big Bad.
So instead of doing the sensible thing and selling everything and going to live it up somewhere nice, she decides to track down whomever murdered Uncle Eric, supernatural or not.
I can easily see this series getting better and better as it goes along, and I hope that is what happens....more

Not so much Owen Kennedy, Atticus's Archdruid, as most don't know of him yet. Atticus rescued him from the Time Stream Islands, after two thousand years, and Owen needs to catch up on what's been happening since he was trapped by the Morrigan.
This book switches POV between Atticus, Owen & Granuaile and some have stated it is a series of stories jammed together to create a book. I disagree. It is a refreshing change in the storytelling but I wouldn't want it to become the norm. I did appreciate the nod to Game of Thrones, very entertaining, as well as Star Wars.
Granuaile, is contacted by Laska about her father who is digging in India (he's an archeologist). So she goes off to India to find out what's happening. And makes some very bad choices.
Atticus is teaching Owen the history he has missed and about the modern world. He is also hopeful that Owen can repair his shapeshifting tattoos.
Oberon is intending to write the perfect book to the Sausage, titled The Five Ways of Meat, after Musashi's Five Ways of War book. And Granuile's hound Orlaith is learning to speak.
Loki is a very bad God, and I'm looking forward to watching Atticus and gang defeat him, hopefully soon.
