This one started while Eve & Roarke are still on honeymoon at a nice half built resort off planet, owned by Roarke, and of course Eve investigates a death that looks like self-termination, but just doesn't feel right.
When they get back to Earth and work, Eve gets Peabody assigned as her permanent aide and thus a great working relationship has begun.
Several more self-termination deaths of unlikely people pop up and Eve is hot on the case.
Mavis is singing again and her new agent Jess Barrow is causing Eve & Roarke some unusual side effects.
Is he the killer or is it someone else? Like all good mystery novels, you need to read it to find out.(less)

It is an epic case of a squad gone bad. Central's Illegals division headed up by Lt Renee Oberman, daughter of a decorated former police commander has gone very bad, so bad cops are dying.
Lt Eve Dallas & Det Peabody are on the case, with a select bunch from Homicide & our cast of regulars.

The city in which she killed her father, when she was 8, which always seems to haunt her and gives her nightmares. Roarke of course doesn't let her go alone.
Issac MacQueen, pedofile and murderer, escapes prison and heads to Dallas to draw Eve away from her comfort zone. Eve had put him in gaol only 6 weeks after graduating from the Police Academy and he blames her for the last 12 years of his incarceration.
Issac uses women to do all his domestic & criminal activities, including luring young girls for his pleasure. So he always has a woman partner until he gets tired of them, slits their throats and throws them in the river. His partner in Dallas is a big surprise to Eve and I won't say any more about that as it would be a huge spoiler.
Of course, Issac's purpose is to kill Eve, as well as raping young girls. Just like Eve's father. And that plays out right to the end.
Loved this one even though we get little of all the great regulars, but we do get a whole lot of Roarke, and that makes up for it. (less)

Eve takes Roarke to Ireland for an anniversary vacation with his family, and has some problems with nature - there is too much of it. But the cows suspicisously getting too close to the house and the sheep discussing war strategy near the stone ruins was hilarious.
Loved the idea of Clue, the chef in the garden with the harpoon, the LC in the House of Horrors with the bayonet, the facilitator in the park with the bullwhip.
Eve fairly quickly realizes what is going on but has a hard time gathering evidence to convict our gamesters.
The easiest way to get them, she reasons, is to set herself up as bait. With the entire team and Roarke on hand she once again suceeds.
Eve and Roarke have some very nice moments in this book and there is definitely less sniping. Eve even half organises a bbq for Saturday night (day after the take down) to cheer up Morris, with all the cops attending. (less)

With such a long series I compare the In Death books against each other not outside reads.
It's Eve & Roarke's first Christmas, and Eve gets an unwelcome present when an insane mass murdering serial killer escapes an off-world prison and heads back to NY so he can take some revenge against those that locked him up.
Of the 6 names on the killers' list, 3 are dead fairly quickly and it is a race against time to save the other 2 and of course herself, for Eve is the last name on the list.
Dr Mira is #5 and he grabs her despite all the precautions to use as bait for a New Years Eve celebration of pain and death.
Eve saves the day with help from all the team and Roarke, but it all ends a little too quickly IMO.
Love this series but you don't really need to read this one.(less)

But first Dallas has to save Mavis from a murder set-up.
This story is all to do with illegal drugs and how models & actors want to look young forever and think that there won't be any consequences.
Peabody gets her chance to assist Dallas in various police duties and gets assigned permanently to homicide. Dr Mira gets Dallas to open up more about her past, so much so that Dallas tells Roarke that she killed her father, then he makes her tell Dr Mira when she wants to have the incident investigated. She was 8 yrs old and being continually sexually abused, as if anyone would prosecute. But Dallas wasn't in the right head space cause Mavis was charged with Murder 2.
Mavis and her boyfriend Leonardo, the dress designer are a constant throughout this episode and we get to see just how close Mavis and Dallas are. Lovely. Dallas does have friends, she just doesn't realize it.
The culmination is Dallas's hens party. Guests include Mavis, Dr Mira, Peabody, Nadine Furst & Trina, the hair stylist. Also along just waiting his chance is the murderer. Once again Roarke arrives just as Dallas has saved herself.

Roarke knows too many people and once again they are being murdered.
We also are witness to the first steps of Peabody on the way to becoming a detective and the beginnings of the friendship between Eve & Nadine Furst, Channel 75 Head Crime Reporter.
Uncharacteristically, Eve pressures the wrong suspect and an innocent family is torn up. However, it isn't long till the penny drops and she is hot foot after the right crim.
Once again a great mystery but a better romance with characters with depth.(less)
