At first this book was a little bit hard for me to get into. But soon I was HOOKED! I loved every character, and the "far-fetched" things began to make sense to where I could believe there could be things (demons, shadowhunters) out there that our human eyes don't see. And scenes were described in such a way where I could totally picture things.
Clary can see the Shadowhunters fighting some demons one night when no one else does. Why can she see them?? And Jace! Oh my goodness!! He's a tormented, "tough-guy" with the most witty, adorable, sarcastic attitude! He had me laughing and swooning and feeling giddy! Then there is Clary's best friend, Simon, who is just so fun. He has always loved Clary but Clary never knew that. So this has a bit of a love-triangle aspect, but it doesn't dominate the story. At the end is a major twist which had me tied up in knots. It was shocking and kind of exciting, and I was left with a smile on my face, but then I was like...wait, everything I loved about this book will be changed in the next book, so then I was depressed. But right away the next book did not disappoint! The angst, forbidden love and Jace's tormented, witty attitude continue!!
** Example of Jace's sarcasam: “Have you fallen in love with the wrong person yet?" Jace said, "Unfortunately, Lady of the Haven, my one true love remains myself." ..."At least," she said, "you don't have to worry about rejection, Jace Wayland." "Not necessarily. I turn myself down occasionally, just to keep it interesting.”
Below is a fanmade trailer for this book where they use the actual Clary and Jace that they are using in the movie. Jamie Campbell Bower IS Jace! He is PERFECT!! (This video makes me want to go re-read the books now!).......

Most eveyone else only seems OK with it because they know or hope it's not the case and things will change. For me, they fell in love not knowing all the facts, they never grew up knowing each other in that way, so I understood how they could still feel things for each other, and I was STILL rooting for them, even though I knew it couldn't or shouldn't be. This was my favorite of the series!! So much forbidden love, angst, "will-they-won't-they" drama!(less)

I have minor annoyances with this book, like the magical aspects of being able to produce any kind of food or cloth. Also, I kinda missed the brothers being tigers more. The more of the curse that gets broken, the less they are tigers, and I really miss that! But the wonderful way I FEEL about this book stays with me long after reading! And, oh my goodness...REN AND KISHAN!!!!...and I like Kelsey too! This is a love-triangle story at it's best! Kelsey is not wishy-washy about which one she loves. She doesn't feel like she NEEDS the other guy when her love is not around, so she doesn't use anyone like Bella did to Jacob. It's real, honest friendship, and also attraction, but an attraction that she doesn't act upon because she loves another. And I love the tension between Ren and Kishan, but I also love that they are there for each other when push comes to shove. And the END(The last few chapters)!!!! OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! I want to go back and re-read those over and over again!! Heartbreaking, but sooooo good! I loved seeing Ren and Kishan so close to each other, and so much more, but I can't say because of spoilers!!! This does not leave you with a cliff-hanger, oh no!..This PUSHES you right off the cliff and leaves you falling until you can start the next book in the series!!

I found it to be real and relatable, even though it is a paranormal story, the angel aspect to it was one I could believe could really happen. Matthias is Zoe's autistic sister's guardian angel. Zoe is able to see him one day but he is not allowed to touch or be touched by anyone he is not charged with guarding. I found it believable that an autistic girl would have a guardian angel, and that some people could have the gift of seeing guardian angels, and if I were a teen and could see a cute, non-judemental angel, I might not be able to resist falling in love with him either, forbidden or not!! I love ALL the characters in this story! - They are all done so well! This story kept me on the edge of my seat, and kept my heart going "pitter-patter". There is so much longing in this, and yet it is so pure, but not boring at all..I don't know how that is pulled off, but it is! Zoe seems unlikable at first, but you come to understand why she feels the need to party and is frustrated with her crazy home life, living with an autistic sister. (The author has an autistic daughter and therefore this is done very believably). There is a surprising ending that had me wondering if I wanted to read the next book, but I am so glad I did! The next book gets even better...introduces a new love interest who I was determined not to fall for, and I ached for Matthias because of who it was!, but fall for him I DID!! This is not the kind of love triangle as is present in so many other books...it's hard to explain...but, a new love interest is not brought in just to stir up angst...You truly do not know how things will turn out/work out/who you want her to be with/or who she WILL end up with. This is a story the likes of what I have never read before, and I loved it! I have read and enjoyed the WHOLE Heavenly series very much! (Heavenly/Penitence/Absolution)

I was heart-broken for Matthias because of who it was; I thought Zoe couldn't start falling for him, and most of all, I WAS NOT GOING TO FALL FOR HIM!! But, Oh My!! I DID fall for him!!! I really enjoyed the good VS evil theme going in this book. I enjoyed how Zoe can now also see the evil spirits that come to tempt us to do bad.

I originally gave this 4 stars, but after reading the 3rd book in the series(and loving it!), and because this is one of very few books that would hold my attention to read subsequent times, I have to change up to 5 stars.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: This had a great plot line, with a well described, delicious hero. My one complaint and why I give 4 stars is I didn't really feel much of a conection with the heroine, but I don't dislike her and it doesn't seem to take away from the story for me at all because Patch is great and the two of them are great together!! I love how Patch originally had other plans regarding Nora, but his view of her changed and he couldn't go through with it (although, back to Nora not drawing me in, I'm not sure WHY Patch came to feel anything for her... there wasn't any specific thing that I could see that should have drawn him to her.) But, besides that, it works and was a great story! I'm excited to read Crescendo, and from reviews I've read it sounds like it's even better!(less)

In each book I had a different favorite character...In Heavenly, it was Matthias, the guardian angel; in Penitence it was Zoe's human love interest; and in this one it was Luke, Zoe's brother! He began fighting his addiction demons and he became the sweetest, most caring brother, and I also loved seeing him become an adorably loving boyfriend to an abused, deserving girl! (It's been a year since I've read this..I need to go re-read so I can write a better review!)(less)

I LOVED the first 3 books in the series, but this one seemed...I don't know, kind of unneccesary or something. Nothing major really happens(until the end). I think this could have been a 5 book series and just skipped this one. There was nothing that ever happened that made me squeal with delight or made my heart race or made me go, "oh my gosh!". Jace was lacking his witty, sarcastic, tortured attitude. He was just sulky and distant, but I didn't FEEL the "tortured hero" part of him at all. And there was nothing major with Simon I could feel either. I don't CARE about his relationship with either girl he likes. I just couldn't feel it. I thought this author liked to write about crazy messed up relationships, ie:forbidden, angst, jealousy, ect. There was none of that! I would have liked some drama, like maybe if Clary started spending time with another guy when Jace was being distant and then he got angry and jealous or something. Things went a little TOO well for my taste in this one.(Until the end of course!). I loved the way this book ended! It leaves so much potential for book 5 and I'm sure that will be much better! I'm starting that one immediately!!(less)

This author has a wonderful imagination and a great flare for description and angsty relationships full of drama that I love. BUT....the relationship drama has changed. I no longer CARE! I give ONE star for the large amount of bad/inappropriate content, 2 stars for added characters I didn't care about, and FIVE stars for the MAIN story line. Overall, I'll have to go with 2 STARS. I devoured the first 3 books, was disappointed in the 4th, and started out loving this one for about a 3rd of it, then page after page starts focusing on all these different couples "getting it on". Ugh! And it happens time and time again! There is heated/sexual vampire blood drinking, faery drugs use, ect. I feel like the author has a "gay pride" agenda going on with Alec and Magnus. Also, I don't like Isabelle for Simon. And I miss the Jace, Clary, Simon triangle I think. And I'm not at all swooning over Jace like I was in the first 3 books. Probably because he's not himself(but that's the whole book!) I do love when we get to see a glimps of the old, tortured Jace when the rune is messed up for a bit near the end. The story does start getting better again then. I think Sebastian is my favorite character in this book!(That's sad!) But at this point, the only thing that can redeem this series, in my opinion, is if Sebastian is redeemed and becomes good. I do like the angle the author is taking with Jace and Sebastian being connected, and Sebastian being drawn to Clary, but there is so much other crap that I don't care about thrown in. I think she could have easily made this a 4 book series instead of 6. (less)

This author has a way of bringing the story so vividly to the mind! I LOVE the tortured hero in this! He is very sarcastic (I laughed a lot at the things he said!), he's also very angry/bitter about something, and you still don't know what by the end of the book, so you will want the next book to read right away. This is a prequel to The Mortal Instruments series, which I also love. I read reviews saying this is just a repeat of that series with the same characters, just different names. I didn't find that to be so. Of course there are similarities because it's about the same thing (shadowhunters, downworlders and demons). But this book introduces a whole new aspect to the mix, which I really enjoyed! I could picture these clockwork creatures so well. I'm also glad to know this series will wrap up after the 3rd book and I don't have to go through waiting for 6 books like with The Mortal Instruments.(less)

I read all through the night and then realized it was time to get my kids up for school and I was still reading! I had to give this 4 stars rather than 5 because I felt it was too long and drawn out. Before the wedding, the wedding, the honeymoon...all that dragged on and was a bit boring for me. Then I felt the intro to ALL those new characters that came to stand as witnesses or whatever for when the Vulturi came was unneccesary. And then I got tired of Edward and Bella "wanting" each other all the time! There's just something about reading about a married couple that takes the thrill out of things I guess! I much prefer to read about the emotions of dating. But, all that aside...I LOVED THIS!!!! As I read, every time I thought Jacob would find someone else, I couldn't stand it, and yet I wanted Bella with Edward too! I just couldn't fathom how anything would work out to a satifiying end because I LOVED Jacob AND Edward! I loved how things ended up!(less)
