There was nothing wrong with it in the slightest but at the same time absolutely nothing absolutely amazing about it either. And I was wrong.
Not long after the 50 pages, I soon became lost within this book, picking it up at every opportunity even just to read a few more pages, I just had to read more! In fact I would say that was an understatement. Every time I put the book down I felt a complete longing to pick it back up again and get swept up in 1950's America with totally loveable characters who quite honestly as silly as it may sound, felt like family!
The plot itself is fairly simple and needs no explaining as I'm sure most people are aware of it, so won't repeat the same old stuff that other people have said about the plot. All that needs to be said is it revolves around racist attitudes in America when all the race issues (Martin L K period) were coming to light and thats why I also loved this book, absolutely completely passionate about 1920s+ Black America this book well and truly fascinated me!
I would say this is for the most part a character drive book although there is a plot to speak of too! As for the actual character development, no other words can describe it apart from as absolute brilliant, all characters feel like people I know personally, people I can see right in front of my eyes, talking to me, gestulating to me, so very very real! I absolutely adored Scout and Jem, such a typical sibling relationship, which made me giggle at times!
I came late to reading this book, its been renowned like forever and I'm so glad that I finally got around to reading it. Absolutely loved it. Kudos Harper Lee for this outstanding piece of literature that will always stay with me and of which I have no doubt I will return to one day....more

Ive heard so many good things about it but for me it appeared to be another exceptional overhyped book! Although not rubbish by any means, I will say it was okay at best and it improved as it went along BUT the problems for me were firstly how it was written, I wasnt keen on the prose, it became very irritating at times. I also didnt like the character development which was extremely minimal. The plot had the potential to be good but ended up rather poor and with no big main event so to speak and was extremely repetitive. So would I recommend? Probably not unless your a diehard Golding fan who wants to read all his works....more

Nothing wrong with the author or his writing, just not my genre of book. I wanted to at least give it a go but not enjoying it so no point. I can see myself enjoying the film version though... I have all 3 lord of rings as well. I will try to see if I have more success getting into those at a later date but perhaps not for me also, we will see. ...more

Utter crap are the words best to describe. Finally got half way through [About a month later:] and I finally gave up, I don't usually like doing that but I hated it!!
First off, its real boring. Secondly, I hated the constant Henry/Clare/Henry/Clare. Pointless and boring in my opinion. Thirdly, damn right paedophillic at times. Disgusted me utterly. Fourthly, couldn't stand any of the characters. Clare a wealthy stuck up woman and Henry a boring librarian. Couldn't relate at all. Fifthly, storyline? So he time travels, so what, I'm not interested in hearing about his various days doing various things. BORING!
Like I say, hated the book. Won't be picking up her next one because that's probably overrated trash aswell....more

Rose is leaving to get married, whilst Tor is her bridesmaid and on the hunt for a potential love interest whilst being chaperoned by a "mysterious" Viva who seeks to find out more about her past.
I found the book quite simply fairly dull reading, not demanding in the usual sense of the word, but demanding to me in the aspect it felt like a huge effort to continue reading it. I didnt particularly care what happened to either of the characters as they appeared very wooden and the author in my opinion didnt "bring them to life" very effectively at all.
I chose this book after having enjoyed other "indian literature" novels such as a suitable boy by Vikram Seth etc however, this book is on a completely different level to those others, at the best, very average. Not outstanding or special, just average and barely readable.
If you like your characters 2D, your plots pointless and rambling and to invoke feelings within yourself such as boredom, frustration and eagerness to finish the book, then this is for you. If not, I wouldn't recommend it at all. Okay perhaps for an easy beach read however as although it is quite bad, it certaintly isnt the worst thing Ive ever read. ...more
