I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! And not only because it was the very last Book that Husband bought me at the end of the first Decade of this Millenium,or even because he had arranged to take me on New Years Eve to my most Favourite Bookshop in the World-THE WATERMILL in Aberfeldy, although I have to admit that it does give it a "je ne sais quoi" all of it`s own. This book is written by Susan Hill ( many of you may know her as the author who wrote "Mrs De Winter"-a sequel to REBECCA ),I have some of this Authors works on my Bookshelfs waiting to be read but did not know much about her work. I was wandering along the Bookcases in the Bookshop and this little Gem literally leap out at me( to any of my friends who may read this-you will instantly recognise this phenomina as something that regularly happens to me! ).From the first instance when my eyes lit upon the Dust Jacket which is designed to look like books on a shelf I found myself entranced.I opened to the first page and immediately identified with this Book upon reading the opening paragraph, wich follows here :
" IT BEGAN LIKE THIS.I went to the shelves on the landing to look for a book I knew was there. It was not. But plenty of others were and among them I noticed at least a dozen I realised I had never read. "
My first thought was that she was writing about my life!!!And so I went back and read the synopsis, which Dear reader is even more intriguingly designed to draw you in..... Baisically this book is about a year in the life of Susan Hill when she decides not to purchase any books but to spend a year " reading from home",she takes us on a guided tour through her home and tastes in literature,so much so that not only did I sit and read this book in one sitting (to the detriment of Husbands Stomach) but I also had to seekout a Book that she had described so briefly but poignantly "The Blue Flower" by Penelope Fitzgerald. She is a voraciously varied reader and so anyone reading this book should ultimately find a book or Two in common with her.She laments the loss of the old names for book sizes and freely admits to holding no patience with the current trend for E-Readers,she is a Book Purist and I confess to having fairly similar views myself, whilst realising that the main thing is for people to continue to read in whatever format they choose,to the Author of this book and my own view the saddest thing in the world would be if people stopped reading for pleasure as it enhances not only our lives but our capacity for learning. Whether like me you are a BOOKAHOLIC or if you just like to read on holiday for relaxation I strongly believe there is something to strike a chord in everyone but the hearts of the strongest Book Haters ( yes,sad to say such people do exist! ). To anyone who decides to read this book,I say open yourself to the enchantment captured within its pages,in the words of W.H. Auden "prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone",and knowing how I feel about my Girls this is indeed a strong quote for me to use! In closing what I will say is,to anyone who loves " 84 Charing Cross Road or The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street " give yourself a treat read this little book as I do not believe there will be many more books written about Books with such intense Knowledge or love of the Subject!!!...more
