I had had it with the way my family and I were eating. After having our third child, it seemed that the things we used to care about got thrown out the window, and nutrition was one of those things. While I was waiting for a prescription one day I decided to browse the local used bookstore for a book that could remind me of what I'd forgotten, and maybe also teach me something new. Amidst a pile of fad diet books and programs customized to just one special subset of humanity, I found this book, glistening with the toothy grins and big 80's hair of Harvey and Marilyn Diamond. The accolades plastered across the cover for being the number one ever best-selling diet and nutrition book, as well as the long-term implications of the title, instilled more confidence in me than any of the other books I saw. Also, it was $3.80. I brought it home. What I found as I began to read was incredible. Harvey manages to explain the design of our bodies, and particularly the digestive system, in a way that imparts wonder and even awe. As I read, I began to understand the amazing machine inside me. With a fat scientific bibliography, he explains what the various foods we eat do to that amazing machine, and it is absolutely startling. While all he said rang true, the implications were a bit intimidating. It meant changing a LOT about the way I'd always eaten, and the way our society teaches us to eat. What about the four food groups? What about how our bodies get protein? Calcium? I needed more, especially since the book is as old as I am. Further research led me to another amazing book called The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, the foremost book in diet and nutrition today. What can I say? The Diamonds knew their stuff. I heartily recommend both books. The 30-day detoxification menu plan in the second half of Fit for Life is full of really delicious recipes that help you to transition smoothly, despite the HUGE paradigm shift you're experiencing. My husband and I have not felt deprived in the least, and are viewing food in a much healthier way now. Better yet, we've lost a combined 20 pounds in two weeks and are feeling truly healthful, a big change.
Wow! On my list of things that I thank God for, this book is way up there. Dr. Campbell has been in the nutrition and disease field his whole life andWow! On my list of things that I thank God for, this book is way up there. Dr. Campbell has been in the nutrition and disease field his whole life and this work is the culmination of what appears to have been a long, sometimes very isolating, journey. Even in our country today, although this book has received many accolades, I am a little nervous about how to talk to people about it. I feel like screaming "READ THIS BOOK!!! NOW!!!" but somehow doubt the efficacy of that method. This is a life-changing book for everyone in Western society, even the skinny people. I've read some reviews that took issue with various elements of Campbell's arguments, who said it was boring, or who were looking for recipes for the diet he recommends as both a prevention and a cure for many life-taking Western diseases. I do not see much relevance in these complaints, after re-reading the sections at issue. Reading this book gives you a good sense of the incredibly change-resistant climate we live in--big businesses, government, medicine, and even many researchers are driven enough by profit NOT to tell the whole truth, or to respond honestly when the truth is told. Does that sound nuts? Read the book and ask yourself why you haven't heard most, if not any, of this before. I WILL be rereading the whole book, and genuinely urge everyone to get a copy and work through it, but suffice it to say that what we don't know IS hurting us. My family has drastically changed our eating habits towards a whole-foods, plant-based diet as a result of the incredibly strong implications of Campbell's and others' research, and we are already feeling so much better. As for how to implement the changes, there are a lot of great cookbooks out there that enable the transition to be smooth and even enjoyable. My husband, former carnivore extraordinaire, went through a very short psychological withdrawal period and is now looking at food in a whole new (much healthier) way. Praise the Lord! This is so much more than a weight-loss book. If someone in your family has suffered from heart disease, breast-, prostate-, or large bowel cancer, obesity, diabetes (either type), rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimers or other forms of dementia, kidney stones, macular degeneration, migraines, hay fever, estrogen-related maladies, the list goes on--this book could be a life- or health-saver for you. ...more
